Shame culture in being rejected for marriage

I have noticed that many people in our community, mostly parents but also youths have this conceit regard about themselves that they are unwilling to ask someone for proposal to not reduce their status and boost the status of other sides incase of rejection.

I have heard this many times. " I will not ask her for my son, what if they say no? then they will say in pride so and so asked for my daughter and we said no huh....."
Is this the reason why many people choose to marry close family?

Is this mentality not wrong? why have people become like this. Sure some families will boost about the amounts of proposals they received and from who, but really who cares?
