Hello all

This is more of a rant/word of advice for all you guys that are feeling low, especially during these trying times.

You have your health and security and that is important above all else.

I recently graduated as a medical doctor, having done degrees in both biomedical science and medicine (I am 27). I was due to start my foundation training in a hospital in the South, had everything lined up including a place to stay, living near family, looking for a wife, saving up money for a new car to replace my old one, signing up to the local gym, plans to go skiing with friends once lockdown was over, even a road trip through North America - lots of exciting plans in the works now that I had finally achieved my dream of being a doctor.

But I didn't get to do any of that. Out of nowhere I started getting severe abdominal pain, LOTS OF diarrhoea, vomiting, losing blood through stools, hair started falling out, feeling very tired and lethargic, extremely depressed. 2 weeks later I was diagnosed with the essentially life-ending Crohn's disease. Over the course of 2 weeks my life had completely changed and all those plans went into the rubbish bin. I didn't even get to work one day as a doctor as I am sat at home, life over, RUINED, sick to death of the side effects of all the nasty medicines I am taking. I am in constant discomfort and I cannot sit down without feeling the urge to go to the toilet along with painful cramps. I can barely eat anything now since my GI tract is extremely sensitive to lots of foods which I can no longer enjoy. This is my life from now on until the day I die.

I feel like I did everything right in life - I prayed, fasted, remained chaste and never did anything haram with any women, and I obviously worked hard to become a doctor.

And that was all a giant waste of time.

So I really hope that some positivity can come out of my story - if you have your health, you have everything. Even if you are sat at home, alone in lockdown - as long as you have your health, you have everything. Please feel happy about that!

The diagnosis of Crohn’s disease typically occurs between the ages of 15 and 35. The condition does not usually shorten life expectancy, and most people with Crohn’s disease enjoy full and rewarding lives.

Research indicates that the areas of the body where Crohn’s disease is active rarely change over time.

However, the progress of the disease is different in every individual. Some people may have long periods of remission while others will experience more frequent flare-ups.

One study found that, over the course of their lifetime, people with Crohn’s disease condition spent an average of:

24 percent of the time in remission

27 percent of the time with mild cases of the disease

8 percent of the time with various severe forms of the disease or in surgery

41 percent of the time in remission after surgery

Even though a cure for Crohn’s disease remains elusive, researchers have found that once a year has passed since diagnosis, most people begin to spend more time in remission. Many people also see a drop in the frequency of their severe flare-ups.

Although it tends to not affect lifespan, I would say the disease is 'life-ending' in the sense that I am no longer able to life the life I worked so hard for - and the drastically reduced quality of life means that I would not want to live a long life with this horrible disease.

For the layperson, I really want you to understand that it doesn't matter if you have or haven't heard of crohn's, the point is to treasure your health! I would do anything to get mine back.

You have been recently diagnosed with this so I can understand why you feel your life is over. Try not to think too much, give it a little time.

Once into goes into relapse you will realize you can still do a lot of things.

You are still starting your job, right?

Crohn's disease is an autoimmune disease. The immune system is triggered for some reason (which tends to be a combination of genetics and environment), and it begins attacking healthy cells. It can affect the mouth all the way to the anus. It is highly variable, for some people its very mild, for some people the impact on quality of life is so severe that it has driven people to suicide unfortunately.

It's definitely not a prion, that's something completely different.

I am not currently working nor will I be able to.

I have been dealing with this for nearly 8 months now. This is my life unfortunately.

Some other jobs you can look at meanwhile?

Thank you for your warm sentiment.

Finding another job/field after mentally and financially committing myself to my dream profession whilst being permanently physically ill is a massive hurdle for me right now that may be insurmountable. Losing my career is just one of many things I have lost.

Iranian traditional medicine encompasses a diversity of knowledge about preventive medicine, remedies, and the preservation and promotion of good health.

It focuses on six key factors: food and drinks, climatic conditions and environment, physical activities and rest, psychiatric conditions including that of sadness, happiness, depression, and stress, sleep and wakefulness, absorbing key nutrients and ridding body from waste materials (sweat, urine, or feces).

It comprises orally transmitted knowledge and practices as well as thousands of written texts. The philosophy and traditional knowledge are highly respected and Iranians regard their traditional medicine as a defining part of their communal identity.

In the Iranian-Islamic traditional medicine the excess or lack of warmness and humidity define four essential temperaments of “Warm and Wet (sanguine or Damawiy)”, “Warm and Dry (choleric or Safrawiy)”, “Cold and Dry (melancholic or Saudawiy)” and “Cold and Wet (phlegmatic or Balghamiy)” respectively. The terms in the parentheses refer to four groups of material in the body (called “humors” or 'Akhlat') including blood which is hot and moist, phlegm which is cold and moist, bilious or yellow bile which is hot and dry and atrabilious or black bile which is cold and dry. Words written in italic show original Persian terms in the ancient literature.

Seyed Mahdi Mirghazanfari, MD, holds a PhD degree in medical physiology and is an Iranian-Islamic traditional medicine researcher. He is also an assistant professor in AJA University of Medical Sciences, Tehran.

this disease often damages the layers of intestinal tissue and can be both painful and debilitating and tiring, and sometimes even life-threatening.

So far, there is no known cure for this disease, but as we will say in this section of Moist Health , some treatments can reduce its signs and symptoms and even improve in the long run.

slippery elm isa plant that can naturally prevent inflammation and help heal damaged and injured gastrointestinal tissue. It also helps to facilitate natural bowel movements. Slippery elm herbal tea has a beneficial role in maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach. Salamaalaikum brother,

Have patience till you get it into remission. You can then carry on with your life as usual.

I've had a similar journey to yours. Got diagnosed with Crohn's at 27 at the peak of my youth. I had suffered from severe chronic back pain for 4 years prior to that. I had 4 surgeries of fistula in ano and due another one due to the constant occurrences. I used to lift heavy in the gym 3 times a week and yoga at the weekend. Now, I did a side plank for 30 seconds and was curled up, lying down in pain for almost an hour. Alhamdolillah for everything.

Just take one day at a time and thank Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) for all your blessings. Inshallah it will be in remission soon and you'll lead a normal life as how other people do inshallah.

selam dear brother.

i feel really sad with everything what is going on in youre life, lots things happens all of a sudden without expecting such things to even happen...

i have also seen patients of mine (including a classmate) as you know yourself its an illness that can have a impact on youre life and you will be extra sensitive for any extra corporeal microorganisms (including virusses)... the life is really unfair and causes the most healthy people get ill at once and also the other way.

also crohn is a lifelong condition( ithink you got confused between life-ending and lifelong).. dont feel panicked its not like you will die immedially.. you will witness painfull attacks (not always) but its not like you will get HUGE restrictions like being chrnically paralyzed and disturbed in your daily life because many as I just said (including classmate who is also a hardworking nurse) are able to just live a normal life .. (you will not die immediately) also our scientists ( I am student of it) we also have strong belief that the people with Crohn disease mostly live as long as average person..

never think that the time you spended on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) will be a waste!! its rateher allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) gives soo much mercy on you while you suffering from pain! cause trust me, i have seen patients (even the kaffirs) who will get stressed before their last breath only because they feel guilty of not having believed and trusted in a god....

Crohn's disease is such a damned disease also because the knowledge about it isnt fully complete.. and as you know yourself even we in the pharmaceutics dont have any medication yet for the diseases that hits the autoimmune system.

I pray for you for a lot of strength and that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) is still able to bring healing on you , so who know..maybe you as a doctor (biomedical background) will be able to design a medicine or cure against it.

youre strength provide a lot of inspiration for others..DONT FORGET THAT.

btw thank you for sharing youre story.. I myself am a registered nurse therefore i have experience in the pharmaceutical world, if you want to lose youre story  and want some support then i am on youre side and ready to help you!!

servant at youre service!!!

Hello all

Thank you to everyone for your pleasant words and advice

At the moment its just a case of trying to come to terms with the disease - I still really haven't accepted it. Every night when I go to sleep I pretend that I will wake up healthy again and that it was all just a bad dream - this type of thinking doesn't really help to be honest and I'm trying to stop it.

The thing that really upsets me is seeing my colleagues from university go off and find training posts, discuss medical cases they have come across, get involved in the work that they love, etc. Two have gotten married and put a deposit on a house - I just look at all this and get upset that I can no longer have any of this, despite working so hard for it. A total of 8 years of university (3 for biomed + 5 for medicine) and I don't get to reap the reward for my hardwork because of something random that decided to come out of nowhere at the worst possible time and ruin my life. The thought of being unemployed, single and living an unfulfilling life where my sole purpose for existence in this world is to just survive and manage my discomfort everyday is absolutely soul crushing. A giant waste of life. There are so many experiences I will miss out on that the average person will take for granted.

Knowing that you are going to be alone for the rest of your life is a terrible, terrible feeling.

But guys, please don't see me as a role model because I cannot tell you what I would be prepared to give up just to be normal again. Unfortunately I don't gain much solace in knowing that my suffering is expiating my sins because if I knew I was going to get this disease, why bother working so hard at school and university and spend so much money for a giant waste? There is no honour is sitting at home all day and passing very bloody stools several times whilst being jealous of the average person for having an immune system that didn't decide to randomly start attacking their gut.

I say this condition is life-ending for me, even though it tends to not affect lifespan (however there are potentially life threatening complications like primary sclerosing cholangitis), it has 'ended my life as I know it' and to know that I may live a normal lifespan with this disease is actually more upsetting than if I were to learn that there is a reduced lifespan - its just more years of putting up with endless suffering.

I do appreciate everyone's comments and although this post is a massive downer, really what I want the average reader to see is that, despite all the problems in your life, please please please, appreciate your health and look at me and be thankful that 'you're not that guy'. I really hope this will give people the motivation to get through a bad day if they are having one.

Do not think that your life is suddenly over. You can take your mind to a different place:

write a medical textbook, become a medical researcher, create art, the sky is the limit.

New drugs are created all the time. Your medical situation can get better. Have faith that Allah  (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى)  is protecting you.

Salaam Alaykum Brother,

I was upset when I read your post. I do dua for sure. Do Tawassul to  Ahlulbait.

I had mumps before. Soon after that epilepsy added to the list as well. One time when I woke up from seizure, I felt pain in my shoulders. Now I have shoulder dislocation issue probably for the rest of my life. I do exercuse to make my shoulders stronger. I was under medication for seversl years for epilepsy, and now I'm very good like I never had it before alhamdulillah. Do NOT think about your career and job situation. Your health is the highest priority now. When different hopless thoughts go around your mind, it makes your health much worse. Be hopeful and know that a lot of people here do dua for you. Try to have small enjoyable good times with your current situation. Tawassul to Ahlulbait is very important too. Maybe they want you to go to their house door and beg them for help. A generous person never return people hopeless. Be perssisstent on Tawassul.

Last year, 2020, I had a severe issue. I recited sourah الحشر (page 545) for 41 days consecutively and it became solved for the most part. My current situation is now much better than last year. If you missed one day, start over. I learned that from a hadeeth from Imam Sadiq. It may help you as well in addition to Tawassul and trying to have good time. Inshaallah

Hello - thanks again for your replies

Unfortunately, coming from my background, we tend to think that possessing knowledge of diseases prevents us from getting them and that we are immune - this is obviously not true.

I hear a lot that 'my health is priority' but I think people tend to miss the point - the goal is not to 'survive', but to regain the quality of life I had only last year. That is the real struggle and it is clearly unwinnable. For me, surviving is not enough. I want to wake up in the morning and not have pain, or run to the toilet, or see my hair fall out in the shower, or be scared of eating, or suddenly remember that I will remain single for the rest of my life.

Waking up to live another day is not a 'win' for me.

Waking up to yet again suffer the symptoms of this horrible disease is a 'lose' for me - and I am experiencing that every day.

If western medicines/drugs are barely able to hold it together/improve my situation, I doubt reading dua will make any difference.

Writing books/coaching students/starting a YouTube channel are all wonderful ideas but they are far out of my interest, not what I worked for and are not things that are going to definitely earn me a living so I can move out and live on my own.

I appreciate all the positive thoughts and prayers, however the original post was more just of a rant to help me accept my life from now on, with the secondary purpose of making other people feel better by letting them appreciate what they have.

Thank you for sharing your story. I AM DOCTOR TOO. Spend all my life in struggle, hard to get scholarship to study medicine in lebanon. Traveled to US and studies surgery to be subjected to Racism and had to leave to Australia. Later my hearing was affected, them my vision.

No specialist could find what is wrong with me! After 2 years of investigation and testing and multiple biopsy. I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis...similar to some extent to Chron's disease as granulomatois disease.

God test us with only what we can bear. Many verses in Coran describes struggle, disease , and being tested.

verses in quran anout بلاء, about faithful being tested ... and going to continuous struggle and about patient.

To give your Hope. My vision is restored and hearing improving after being on infliximab infusions.

But it is an opportunity for you to strengthen your faith and accept God's will.

I hope you accept that all people of good faith have their test in life and Allah has choose you to be tested with this disease.

Stay on your faith , resort to God and God will make you victorious

I am still suffering and on 3 different treatments and evey day I have pain and struggle to keep working and keep my faith

My only hope/ peace is God will reward me for this struggle and reward all people of faith...

Hello

Thanks everyone for their words.. there are people out there that have it worse like some people here have mentioned, and although I am still dealing with a severe flareup, I'm hopeful that the suffering will ease off a bit one day. At the moment I am just taking it literally hour by hour (as I do not get to sleep during the night due to the pain and urgency).

I am hoping that one day maybe I will get a big reward for all this immense suffering, hopefully in this life..

stay safe everyone..

Just to let you know you arent alone on this. My dad was a doctor and he also got sick and has not recovered since and has lost his job. Because of that my family had to go through a lot of hard times. So if you ever feel low about being a doctor and then losing your job to a disease atleast be grateful that you probably arent father to a family that you have to take care of and feed like mine.

I feel like I did everything right in life - I prayed, fasted, remained chaste and never did anything haram with any women, and I obviously worked hard to become a doctor.

And that was all a giant waste of time.

Salam. All those things you did right (doing the halal and avoiding the haram) are blessings in your favor, not a waste. Unfortunately you have not been able to do what you were trained to do: be a medical doctor. However, you could think about other ways to use your medical knowledge, in order to help others. Today at work I was thinking that I have listened to youtube videos and typed up what the speaker said, in order to have a written account that I could read for myself, have access to it and be able to read it whenever I can't watch the video. I thought maybe I should get a job as a medical transcriptionist, but I did not go to medical school, so I don't know all the medical language. Immediately I thought about you!

Who would be better qualified to type up medical notes than a medical doctor? You would know everything the patient's doctor recorded by voice; you wouldn't struggle to know the words the doctor said. Of course the job pay is nowhere near the level of the salary that you were expecting when you started your medical career, but if you want to maintain your economic independence by being gainfully employed, while sacrificing your time and effort to help other people (medical doctors and their patients), then please consider medical transcription. *May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) bring your illness into remission.*

What did your GI specialist tell you about your prognosis ? I see dozens of crohns patients and the vast majority of them are well controlled. And I work in an average hospital nothing fancy and not even a big academic setting.

I have other family members with this condition, i would suggest trying a herbal medicine named mastic gum, they come in capsule forms. They sell them on amazon and eBay named mastika. Many family members with this issue and similar it has helped them. I would go for the 500mg vegetarian capsules, which comes as 60.
