Salam everyone,

Another day another argument, so one was my relatives was going to put a fireplace in his room and then he didnt do it cuz of his personal reasons, so i was like oh thats really good cuz u know u need wood for that which is cutting down trees and u burn them which is so much pollution and how we should be taking care of the earth and our trees. Of course he disagrees and says that quran lets him do it so why should he stop and i was like where in the quran does it say this, he goes like theres an ayah which says something like Allah gave u trees so make good uses of them and burn them?? Anyways so i was like idk what to say to that cuz cutting down trees is doing harm and why would it say that in the quran, we also talked about some scientific stuff which he disagreed with as if he knows one thing about science:blabla:(for eg, clouds are made from the smoke when wood is burned etc, i dont want to get into that) but so yea

i want someone to help me out with this and tell me that even if such a verse exists, how would it be interpreted as if of now since there is a lot of deforestation and global warming happening.

please help me out

thank you.

Wa alaikum al salaam,

Can you ask him which specific verse he means? (It is always good to automatically ask the question and look it up)

Here from a text I found

Trees have a high frequency in the Bi-
ble and are so prominent that the main
biblical messages can be summed up by
four trees. In the Koran, trees are most
frequently cited as gifts of a beneficent
Creator, with the notable exception of the
tree of Hell, zaqqm. In both scriptures,
fruits from trees are highly valued.
The study of trees of the holy scriptures
of Islam and Judaism and Christianity,
and the observation that trees are
presented as a resource from God,
leads to the question of how those who
revere the holy scriptures are handling
trees. Sayeed Hossein Nasr (1996), in a
profound volume on the relationship be-
tween religion and the ecological crisis,
argues that what is needed in a modern
world where humans are increasingly
alienated from nature is the recovery of
the truth to which the important enduring
religions all attest, namely, that nature
is sacred.

اَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِىۡ تُوۡرُوۡنَؕ‏

(56:71) Did you consider the fire which you kindle?

ءَاَنۡتُمۡ اَنۡشَاۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡمُنۡشِـُٔـوۡنَ‏

(56:72) Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow?

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةً وَّمَتَاعًا لِّلۡمُقۡوِيۡنَۚ‏

(56:73) We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy

فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ الۡعَظِيۡمِ

(56:74) Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord

-Surt AlWaqi'a

Allah Ta'ala is referring to the countless bounties he's bestowed upon mankind such as the trees that we use to light fires for warmth, light, cooking etc

To answer OP - In this day and age, and due to the rapid deforestation, I would only use firewood as a necessity If there aren't other options for warmth, light or cooking etc.
