Salam,

A long time ago I read a hadith along the lines of 'The tax of knowledge is to spread it'.  I cant remember the source.  Can anyone confirm if this is a hadith?  If you have the original arabic then even better

Thanks in advance

There are a number of narrations that tell us about Zakat for things besides wealth - health, bravery, knowledge, intellect etc.

عَنِ الإِمَامِ الصَّادِقِ: إِنَّ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ زَكَاةً، وَزَكَاةُ الْعِلْمِ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَهُ أَهْلَهُ

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): “Indeed there is a zakat for everything; the zakat of knowledge is to teach it to those worthy of it.”

Another one,

On the authority of Imam {Ali (peace be upon him): “The zakat of knowledge is its conveyance to the one worthy of it and exerting the self in acting upon it.”

Imam Abu Ja'far al Baaqir (عليه السلام) said,

"Zakat, (the tax), on knowledge is in teaching it to the servants of Allah (عزّ وجلّ)."

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il ibn Bazi‘ from Mansur ibn Hazim from Talha ibn Zayd from Abu ‘Abdallah (6th Imam)  (عليه السلام) who has said the following:

“I have read in the book of Imam Ali (عليه السلام) that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) did not had a commitment from and covenant with the ignorant people to seek knowledge prior to having a commitment from and covenant with the scholars to give knowledge as charity to the ignorant ones-since the knowledge existed before the ignorance.”

a relevant Hadeeth,

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd from Yunus ibn 'Abd al-Rahman from the person who he mentioned from Abu ‘Abdallah (عليه السلام) who has said the following:

"Jesus, son of Mary (عليه السلام) once stood up to speak to the Israelites saying,

‘O Israelites, do not speak the words of wisdom to the ignorant people because you will be doing injustice to them (words of wisdom). Do not keep them (words of wisdom) from those
who deserve lest you will do injustice to them (deserving people).’"
