Right , Sunnis have "responses" to all those awkward hadiths as well. At the end of the day it all boils down to "My fart smells good while your's bad"

At the end of the day though, Sunnis actually believe that Musa (عليه السلام) punched the angel of death.

Had I picked a hadith which you all agreed with and made a thread about it, would have gotten nothing but praise, I doubt even if the source would have even been looked at because it conforms to your beliefs...

are you totally unable to see how biased we are when picking and analyzing hadith. any hadith which falls outside our conformed beliefs we find excuses for it either in interpretation or in it's authenticity.

It's not like we know anything about Hadith sciences.

Bro i would not be much interested in Shia-Sunni polemics as i feel they serve no purpose but i would say that whatever whimsical hadiths i have found in Sunni books , can be more or less found in Shia books. The vast collection of hadiths are an encyclopedia of trash. You can find all kinds of irrational ,funny, unscientific, misogynistic, racist, mythical and homophobic stuff there. I can quote you all that stuff and i am sure you would run out of your defenses after 10.

Quote

“This is one of the qualities in which Imam al-Hasan was similar to Allah’s Apostle, peace be on him. He was similar to him in form and manner. Allah’s Apostle, may Allah bless him and his family, said to him: ‘You are similar to me in form and manner.’ He also said: ‘Al-Hasan belongs to me, and al-Husayn belongs to Ali.’ Perhaps al-Hasan married four (women) or perhaps he divorced four (women). ”[1]

[1] Qoot al-Quloob, vol. 2, p. 246.

^ The above quote is from the book The Life of Imam Al-Hasan Al-Mujtaba, in Chapter XXV: His Wives and Children (chapter 25).

http://alhassanain.org/english/?com=book&id=250

Since Imam Hassan AS married more than four women (their names are mentioned in the book), it's clear that the author thought he divorced only four women.

Right , sticking to orthodox Shia or Sunni creed these days need alot of blind faith. You shall have to fill your mind with religious fervor , stop questioning and become a part of herd. I wish Islam goes through some kind of global reformation like Christianity went through during the Protestant reformation otherwise there is no way out. "Scholars" from Hawzas and Madrassahs are just using the pulpits for sectarian purposes and religious scholarship has become more a matter of economics and finances

I don't see how a reformation helped christianity...before and after

which would make me wonder if he were similar why he would divorce innumerable women considering the Prophet (pbuhf) didn't divorce wives so bad that ayat was sent down about them.

"Marry and do not divorce because surely divorce shakes the very Throne of God"

"Allah loves no permissible like marriage, and Allah hates no permissible like divorce."

Imam Hasan ((عليه السلام)) is far above shaking the throne of Allah for no good reason even once let alone that many times.

Right , i know that. Its only for this reason you would be scratching your head once you encounter the reality that infact he was a buman being like us valnerable to all those weaknesses and shortcomings that we all are.

The "reality" of Ahlul Bayt (عليه السلام) is well defined by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) in Quran and by Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) in his famous traditions. Anything contradicting to those are treated accordingly.

Reformation did not help Christianity much theologically but socially it helped alot. It marked an end to the brutal Christian clergy using religion for politics and personal gains. The reformation shaped the west as it is today. Democracy , secularism , freedom of speech , scientific research and humanism all stemmed out of reformation. Theologically , reformation put an end to the Catholic innovations and malpractices as well.

Where in Quran? No sane person can believe that the verses of Quran dealing with the wives of the Prophet would be infact telling us about the so called Itrat of ahlul bayt. You need a huge leap of faith and imagination to extrapolate that. The book of God has just become a toy in the hands of sectarianists who would twist the verses as their sectarian agenda fits into. Do you believe someone can be given charity while doing Ruku'? Do you think that God , as per 12ver version , would tell us about something as important as the Wilayah of Ali in such a whimsical way?

And it too is a toy in the hands of nawasibs who try their utmost effort to hide the great station of Ahlul Bayt (عليه السلام) mentioned in Quran. And these nawasibs are the true sectarianists otherwise I have seen many Sunni scholars rejecting the reports that Imam Hassan (عليه السلام) married 300 wives & divorced 100's. Better look into yourself which school of thought you belongs to.

Yes, it is the case. What problem you have with it? Imam Ali (عليه السلام) did that and it is mentioned by Sunni & Shia scholars.
:) You accept wilayah of Abu Bakr by rejecting the wilayah of Imam Ali (عليه السلام) as mentioned in Quran & as made clear by Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) from Zul'ashera to Ghadeer. So you have to answer that to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) one day. Get ready for it.

I do not care a thing about what Sunni scholars say as i am not an orthodox Sunni. As far as problem , it is more than obvious. How on earth can someone give alms while doing Ruku'? As far as "Wilayah of Abu bakr" , I do not believe it was announced by God rather it was the result of social act post the demise of the Prophet. Abu Bakr became the Caliph in the literal and practical sense. Further , if anyone feels that Abu Bakr usurped it etc , he is free to believe so based on historical accounts and i am sure God would not throw someone to hell for that

Yes, we see the gymnastics when you encounter the hadith of Ghadeer, doing every effort to change the meaning of "mowla". That is called gymnastics.

Yes you reject or infact hate what has been revealed by God & explained by Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and you believe in the appointment of man made caliph. Your "Mowla" is Abu Bakr, accept it.

While I can see all of them are specifically about the Ahlul Bayt (عليه السلام) and some do points towards wilayah of Ameer ul Mo'mineen (عليه السلام).

For you, following verse is sufficient with its full meaning specially the end part in bold.

Quote

As Einstein said "God does not play dice". You are making God and his words sound like the vague language of Latino hip-hop  which only the intoxicated hippies can understand. None of the verses are about about any Wilayah or ahlul bayt at all.

Salam,

Three questions:

  1. Is it true that Imam Hassan (عليه السلام) was a wealthy man?
  2. Is it true that a divorced wife keeps her full dowry (assuming marriage was consummated)?
  3. Is it true that if a child was born, after the divorce, the child is entitled to full inheritance from the father?

It's important to notice that in the narrations regarding Imam Hassan's divorces, there's no mention that the marriages were consummated. Some may have been, some may not. We can't know (at least at this point), since it was not explicitly mentioned. This just entered my mind, because in al-Kafi, there's a chapter on divorcing a woman without consummating marriage. She is still entitled to half of the dowry.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a man divorces his wife before going to bed with her, she does not need to wait for a waiting period. She can marry in the same hour after divorce if she wants. With one divorce she becomes stranger to him and if mahr (dower) is set for her, she deserves half of such mahr (dower).’”

More important pieces of the puzzle that are required to properly understand the context behind Imam's multiple marriages and frequent divorces:

1) Saheeh

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtariy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a man who divorces his wife; if he can benefit her. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, does he not want to be of the people of good deeds, does he not want to be of the pious people?’

Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr has narrated from al-Bazantiy from ‘Abd al-Karim from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . divorced women have rights on the pious ones,’ (2:241) abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is benefiting her after her waiting period ends. An affluent man or one who is not affluent, each must benefit according to their abilities. During the waiting period, however, why he should not benefit her when she is in her waiting period and hopes for him as well as he hopes for her that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, as He wills, may make something happen for them?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If a man is affluent he benefits his wife with servants and a not-so-affluent one benefits with wheat [and barley], raisins, clothes and dirham. Al-Hassan, ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, benefited his wife with a slave-girl. He, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, benefited all the women that he divorced.’”

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from Sama‘ah from Muhammad ibn Ziyad from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah all abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “About the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . divorced women must be benefited with fairness; it is a right on the pious ones’, abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘It is after the end of waiting period, and about, ‘an affluent man and one not-so-affluent each according to their abilities’, he (the Imam) said, ‘Why should he not benefit her during her waiting period when she hopes and he hopes that Allah by His will may make something good to happen for them? An affluent man must benefits his woman with servant and one not affluent, benefit with wheat, (dates), raisins, clothes and dirham. Al-Hassan ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, benefited the woman he divorced with a slave-girl. He (the Imam) benefited all the women he divorced.’”

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from ibn Sama‘ah from Muhammad ibn Ziyad from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar from abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, a similar Hadith except that he has said, ‘Al-Hassan ibn Ali, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would benefit his women with slave-girls.’”

Points to note:

  • The pious (Muttaqeen) and the Good doers (Muhsineen) support and benefit their divorced (ex-)wives.
  • Imam Hassan (عليه السلام) supported all of his divorced wives, generously.
  • Divorcing one's wives, if according to the Sunna and justified, does not make one less of a Muttaqi or Muhsin, as long as one continues to treat one's divorced wives appropriately.

Spoken like the non-Muslims who take their subjective world view to be the absolute truth.

Edit:

Irrational, Unscientific, Mythical = any source of truth other than naturalistic observations.

Misogynistic = men and women not being treated "equally" (egalitarianism as epistemic)

Homophobic = Apparently individuals with homosexual inclinations cannot control themselves from committing homosexuality.

Racist = racism is categorically rejected in Islam, but check out these weak or hadith, or check out my misunderstanding.

I don't see any wrong with this. Prophet Sulaiman (عليه السلام) is also know for his marriages and nothing wrong with that or with divorcing many times. The narration says that Imam Hasan (عليه السلام) supported them after divorce which is the act of good doers.

More important pieces of the puzzle that are required to properly understand the context behind Imam's multiple marriages and frequent divorces:

None of these reports mention 50 divorces. Neither they gives Imam Hassan (عليه السلام) the title "frequent divorcer".

It is what a muttaqi would do. But the problem is not that he had divorced some of his wives. The problem are the report which gives the figure of 50, 70, 120 divorces and upto 300 marriages.

Perhaps a little math can solve this problem as done by our Scholar:

Quote

The fact is that it was impossible for Imam Hasan to marry so many wives even if he wanted to. All the narrations imply that he started this alleged pursuit of pleasure during the Khilafat of his father in Kufa. `Ali came to Kufa in 37 Hijra. Imam Hasan had at least three wives in Kufa.

1. Khawal Fazariya, who was the mother of Hasan Muthanna (the grandfather of Muhammad Nafs al-Zakiyya). She survived Imam Hasan. This marriage had taken place in Medina.

2. Umm Ishaq bint Talha. She was the mother of Husain Athram, Talha and Fatima. This marriage also had taken place in Medina. She survived Imam Hasan; and was later married to Imam Husain.

3. Ju'da bint Ash-ath. This marriage took place in Kufa and she also survived Imam Hasan. (She poisoned him on instigation of Mu'aviya.)

Islam allows a man to marry up to four women at any given time. As Imam Hasan already had three wives, who were with him up to the last day of his life, he could marry only one more woman at any time.

Bearing in mind this limitation, one can only regard the statement of Quwwat al-Qulub with amusement: “Often he (Imam Hasan) married 4 wives in one sitting and then divorced them in one sitting.” How could he marry 4 wives in one sitting when he already had 3 wives?

Now suppose that he married a fourth wife, and then divorced her. As long as that divorced wife was in 'idda (period of probation, normally 3 months) she was counted legally his wife, and Imam Hasan could not marry another wife before expiry of her 'idda.

Let us, now, suppose that he married a woman. As divorce cannot be given in a month in which co-habitation has taken place, the earliest that that wife could be divorced was in next month; her 'idda continued for 3 months. Thus, four months passed before Imam Hasan could be free to marry another wife. One wife in four months gives us a maximum of 3 wives in a year. Supposing that Imam Hasan had no other work except marrying and divorcing, as Mansur said, and if we count from 37 A.H. up to his martyrdom at the beginning of 51 A.H. to get a period of 14 years, this will give us a maximum number of 42 possible marriages.

I never trust usually narrations with different numbers. But one thing I can conclude is that it is possible that Imam Hasan (عليه السلام) married and divorced often for only possibility amount that makes it halal. As for 14 years, it could be very less than 42 marriages. Even if it is was just 10 or 15 in such a perioud of time, it would be still be counted often marriage.

If we suppose such a thing then it will be only insulting, thinking that Imam have nothing to do but to marry and divorce.

It's a polemical assumption, meant to  casually "mock" the other party (not in a bad way). It's to say that it's literally impossible even if he did nothing else.

So in that sense, you too are rejecting the number of divorces mentioned in the hadith quoted in OP.

Another question, do you accept the "title of Mitlaq (frequent divorcer)" given in the above narrations? The phrase "fa innahu rajulun mitlaqun" is nothing but an insult to Imam Hassan (عليه السلام) and a mockery to Imam Ali (عليه السلام) too.

Here is an interesting question and I think it settles this matter:

Quote

The claim is that Imam al-Mujtaba ((عليه السلام).) was a Mitlaaq, which means someone who excessively divorces (from the word talaq).

There are some narrations that hint to this in certain Sunni hadith books, which, for Shi'a, do not carry recognition, based on its sources and also other hadith related principles.

However, the issue is that there are some very scarce and random narrations dispersed in some Shi'a hadith books, like Sheikh al-Kulaini's al-Kafi, that do mention such a thing.

There are different views regarding this issue:

Some scholars, a number of them were Akhbaris, have defending this view, saying that because such has been stated in al-Kafi, hence it must be authentic.

Some justifications have been given that in reality is not correct and the Imam did not excessively marry, but Imam Ali ((عليه السلام).) spread this rumour to discourage people from marrying him and misusing his status.

Another view is that Imam al-Mujtaba ((عليه السلام).) wanted to increase the number of descendants of the holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).

However, there are many problems with accepting these narrations.

This claim is far from any reality, and nothing more than a myth. In one narration it says that a whole caravan of women had claimed that they were his ex-wives. This is very distant from the basic conduct of a normal person, let alone a Ma'soom. Divorce itself was something disliked during the pre-Islamic Jahiliyah age, and so how can we even think that the Imam ((عليه السلام).) would engage in such a thing, and so frequently.

We cannot deny the attempts made by the enemies to defame the members of Ahlul Bayt ((عليه السلام).). This being said, if there was any level of truth to this issue, why do we not have any reference of the likes of Mu'awiyah mentioning this against the Imam ((عليه السلام).).

There is a lot more than can be said about this topic, but in brief it is nothing but a myth and far from the moral and divine status of the Imam ((عليه السلام).).

Obviously, if the statement "fa innahu rajulun mitlaqun" said by Imam Ali (عليه السلام) in Kufa, Muawiya would have known it and would have used it as weakness against Imam Hassan anywhere during his dispute with him.

Also I said what is reasonable and possible with halal

سلام,

Just a quick note:

We ought to be careful not to evaluate Imams' actions based on what we consider to be reasonable.

We do not determine what's reasonable, first, and then judge the actions of our Imams to see if they fit within our notion of "reasonable." Instead, we view their actions, then form the criteria of reasonability in our minds and cognition.

We have been warned, sternly, not to interpret the Qur'an according to our own opinions. And the Imams are the Speaking Qur'an. We view them and their actions, precisely like how we view the Qur'an and its ayaat. They are one and the same and are not separated from one another.

The imams and the Qur'an are with Haqq, and the Haqq is with them. We are distant from the Haqq.

Sorry, I just thought I should bring this point to the surface.
