I need help with bringing a young Murtad back to the deen.

On Reddit, I’ve come across a self-proclaimed “ex-Muslim,” who even happens to be an Iraqi Shia residing in the USA. Most of his claims are based on misinterpretations of the Quran, and I have duly refuted them. But he seems to know nothing about Shiism other than “some guy named Ali wanted to be leader.” (Astaghfirallah, his words not mine) Meaning that his “reasons” for leaving Islam had nothing to do with the Jaafari school of thought and had to do with Islam in general. I’ve told him that there is a tremendous difference between Shiism and Sunnism, but how can I bring him back to the deen without overwhelming him? I’ve shown him some of the scientific miracles in the Quran, but he merely shrugs them off. Any advice?

inshaAllah you are well. Bless you for your concern. I think one way is to challenge all his misinterpretations first. Then go onto any other things that have put him off religion and explain it in a kind way. As this is online it may be other factors such as ill friends, bad family experiences and misunderstanding religion. It could be that  he has stumbled across other ex muslims and been influenced. Even if you try to revert him back, you may not be aware of or be able to challenge any external factors. Unless he is willing to open up to you about those too. Please do keep us updated, (including your and his answers to the challenges inshaAllah) I would like to help you further should my advice work.

you are better off investing your time elsewhere

A tremendous difference between Sunni Islam and Shia Islam? If there is a difference...  then one should go with the former.  You have started off on the wrong foot.

A good character goes a long way when it comes to convincing people But if he's from the ex muslim community on reddit, then only God could bring him back. They are unlike the ex christian community, they didn't leave Islam just because they stopped believing, they left it because they HATE Islam. You will not find a more butthurt and delirious community. Most of their posts are composed of mockery and insults, their bad akhlaq is off the charts. In one of the posts I saw, a guy said something like "My dad called me and asked me to come to friday prayer, instead i'm going to stay in my room and eat this ham pizza and drink beer", with the comments praising him. If that's the community that guy is from, you'd be better off preaching to a brick. Just correct his misunderstandings, no need to get invested in him

Update: You guys were right, it truly was a lost cause. He would never pay attention to any of my claims and constantly bounce from topic to topic, and every time I'd asked him "are you convinced," he'd just say yes and move to the next topic when he truly wasn't convinced. I told him that he wasn't worth my time, and that he truly wasn't interested in religion or spirituality let alone Islam. May Allah (SW) guide him. Hopefully he's just going through his "edgy atheist" teenage phase...
