Is God near us or separate to us according to Imam Ali (عليه السلام)?

Salaamun Alaykum,

What does the following mean in Nahjul Balagha:

"He is with everything but not in physical nearness. He is different from everything but not in physical separation." (Nahj-ul-Balagha, Sermon 1)

I don't understand why you need to know the meaning?

Why can't you accept it for what is being said?

I don't mean to rub you in the wrong way just simple questions, thank you kindly if you wish to reply may God bless you.

In what way is he near and in what way is he different (separate)? This statement seems to be contradicting (nauzubillah), but I am not grasping the Imam’s words.
Is it that he is near to his servants (non-physically) but away from the rejectors?

Ever heard of the phrase, "Good people are of one soul?"

God isn't everywhere in the physical sense, otherwise that'll be pantheism and a common mistake to make.

The soul we have is from God but can we really claim that it's even close to God's in terms of likeness? That's also why we can't agree with Christians. How can the very essence of God, creator of the Heavens and Earth, of the unknown and known, fit into a mere human body.

So yes, He's near everything in essence since our souls are from Him, but different at the same time since God's essence, being infinite and pure is different to ours which is limited and convoluted.

An analogy you can Use for God is that God is to creation as the screen of a movie is to the characters /images of the movie.  The screen is independent of the the movie images but the movie images or characters are dependent on the screen.  It is through the screen, by the screen, and and in screen that the movie images exist or appear.  When you are watching the movie, ask: Where is the screen not?  All is screen and yet, each character or image of the movie cannot be the screen itself.

so, God is the screen of this creation.  This screen is another name for Presence or Consciousness/ Awareness or Wujud.  What is the relationship between awareness and an object of your awareness?

This is better version of the writing and paper analogy
