Gilead Sciences antiviral drug remdesivir may be the best shot for treating the coronavirus, said an official from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Remdesivir, an experimental drug developed to fight Ebola virus, is currently undergoing clinical trial in coronavirus patients in China. WHO expects the trial data to be available within weeks.

At a press briefing in Beijing, WHO assistant director-general Bruce Aylward said: “There is only one drug right now that we think may have real efficacy and that’s remdesivir.”

https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/who-gilead-remdesivir-coronavirus/

for full details of the clinical trials:

https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-clinical-trial-remdesivir-treat-covid-19-begins

they do point out that there have been trials ongoing in China, but don't report any results. Apparently the U.S. ones will take 2 weeks with real patients.

Ayatollah Shobeiri Zanjaani was put in quarantine after his office manager, Mojtaba Fazeli, died of corona.

Since most of the leading Ayatollahs are in the most vulnerable age group, l expect several of them to pass away.

I am serious.

The paper towel stops the airborne droplets that carry the virus.

Just fold one into creases, rubberband the ends and then affix over your nose and mouth.

Thank you for the video on how to make a protective face mask. This is very informative.

Make any correction necessary, @starlight ,

I was watching the news and it had a report of easing recreational marijuana restrictions. So, l wondered what effect this will have on respiratory tracks and SARS-CoV-2 inter-reactions (<-this the correct word?)

From what l could find, marijuana is noticably more damaging to the airways/bronchia than tobacco and has higher measurable amounts of ammonia, hydrogen cyanide and inhalation temperatures. In the second paragraph of this: https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/what-are-marijuanas-effects-lung-health  marijuana use "increas(es) the likelihood of the person acquiring respiratory infections". Vaping is worse.  A short read.

So, l surmise that young people who use are at higher risk to serious outcomes from C0VlD-19 and the surrounding similar age group who do not use will have increased vulnerability.

Will this affect the mutagenics?

Rinse it in alcohol. You can also make other masks out of paper towels just as effective. Use rubber bands or such for your ear attachments.

Breathing through a mask soaked in alcohol... why I am not liking the idea.

Interesting graphic, even if the diagram is not very meaningful without the commentary. What I think are reasonable takeaways are that people who show mild symptoms are ok, but a very small proportion of them will die. Also a small proportion of those who are critical will survive.

Iran has a well-developed health sector, which normally attracts many people from the region, particularly Iraq, seeking medical treatment. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, medical services have been extended to even the most remote villages, and the country’s highly educated population means Iran has many doctors, pharmacists and nurses. Iran also has recent experience of controlling the outbreak of disease. It eradicated polio in the first decade after the revolution and last year prevented the spread of type-B flu, according to health officials, after it killed more than 100 people.

And ...

Iranian officials have their own concerns about neighbouring states. “Can you believe Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan have lower casualties than Iran? It is impossible,” said one official. “Our neighbours either have business reasons not to disclose their deaths like Turkey and UAE, or do not have the laboratory capability to detect the virus.”

That very last point was the one I made, earlier in this thread, when posters here started comparing Iraq to Iran.

What is the capacity if Iran so far in testing and controlling this disease?

I am very worried about a friend in Tehran who seems to have some strange symptoms and has been asked to get tested for Corona but cannot access emergency services as she was told she is having no difficulty breathing nor does she have a fever. She does have chills though.

Do pray for her please. I am very worried. She is a ShiaChat member.

Salam  it’s fair good also recently Iran received test kits from China & some of patients ( about 21 person) cured in Iran .

The doctors, from hospitals across England, said the health service’s existing critical care capacity was already overstretched and “would crumble” under the demands of a pandemic surge in patients who may all need ventilation to help them breathe.

Those denied intensive care beds could be those suffering with coronavirus or other seriously ill patients, with priority given to those most likely to survive and recover.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-uk-deaths-nhs-intensive-care-flu-wise-men-protocol-a9361916.html

The above has always been the key risk with this virus, which makes it different from ordinary flu.

Since Trump says don't worry, I'm starting to worry. I ordered some disinfectant spray. We already have plenty of hand soap.

The virus survives on surfaces for at least nine days. I forgot where I read that a few days ago. Some coronaviruses can survive on surfaces for 28 days, so take precautions if you buy or order anything.

Why are people wearing masks when the masks don't help people who aren't sick to avoid the virus? They only help sick people to (somewhat) avoid spreading it. The best strategy for avoidance is to frequently and thoroughly wash your hands!

Opinions on the US health official declaring that he couldn't guarantee that poor people would be able to get a vaccine if it is developed? I forgot his name - read it this morning.

funny how everyone in the region tries to blame it on Iran.
all this time, no case and suddenly they all reveal their cases, and all are coming from Iran. as if they all were waiting for a country to be the first.
Dubai, Doha, Massqat, Istanbul, all are international terminals in the region, yet they were all clean, until cases started to appear from Iranian city of Qom, a city which basically has no airport!
and in Iran, liberals blame it on Arab and Pakistani pilgrims and foreign seminary students who came to Qom,
dirty games.

same in Iran. whenever Rouhani says no worries, people start to panic!

madness! the whole world is in mask shortage now! and it is basically useless, if not harmful for uninfected ones.
it's only because its psychological effects. it gives a sense of protection to people, a false one in fact.

Yes, it is most strange that Dubai was getting flights from China throughout December and January and yet there was not a single case of covid-19. We are talking about tens of thousands of passengers. Yet the few dozen Chinese students in Qom caused meltdown in the entire region. BBC taking great care to blame Shia pilgrims.

Quote

There are grand ayatollahs in Qom who believe that its shrine, which attracts millions of pilgrims from around the world, and its important seminary, which hosts many foreign religious students, are the pride of the Shia world.

Shutting them down would be a huge step for the clerics and not one that they would be likely to take unless they come under international pressure.

We can see the clear conflict between religious conservatism and science.
