We all know about the new variant called Mu, scientists are doing research if vaccine can work against it. May allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) protect us all.

Wow, look at those numbers! They're worried about Delta, but when I see those numbers I'm thinking "man I wish our numbers were even a fraction as good as those!".

If 5 deaths = spiking hard, I don't even want to know what we would call Florida or California the past few months.

Very useful twitter thread. Argument is that:

  • UK doing worse than rest of Europe due to larger indoor crowds and less mask wearing.
  • Scotland worse than England due to more indoor crowds
  • UK population had double jabs earlier than Europe and efficacy is now wearing down - more booster shots needed

Very confusing when an post starts with 32% of deaths are breakthrough, then end with saying vaccines work.

Over 80% of their population is fully vaccinated, so if breakthroughs account for 32%, then they're working.

Here in the US, breakthrough cases make up something like 15-25% of cases, and ~10% of deaths. Though our nation is closer to 60% vaccinated. So if vaccines weren't working, then our cases and deaths would be significantly higher.

Proportions and quantities are important.

At this point I'm not really complaining though. With 9/10 fatalities being in unvaccinated, if people want to keep playing Russian roulette, it's kind of on them. My neighbor had a 1 year old child and he was against vaccination. Now his child is without a father. It's unfortunate but it's a choice he made.

Swedish doctors sign petition to stop Pfizer rollout over suspected fraud
Quote

It comes as the British Medical Journal (BMJ), a weekly peer-reviewed medical journal from the UK, last week cited a whistleblower as saying that a subcontractor to Pfizer falsified data and failed to promptly follow up on adverse events reported during the crucial phase III trial of the vaccine last autumn.

Brook Jackson, who served as the regional director at the Ventavia Research Group, told the BMJ that the company unblinded patients, and employed inadequately trained vaccinators.

According to the report, staff members who conducted quality control checks were “overwhelmed by the volume of problems they were finding.”

Quote

The health experts also suggested that the extent of the number of reported suspected side effects of Pfizer jabs is “gigantic”.

They put the number of suspected side effects reported during the ten months that vaccination has taken place at 83,744, 10 times more than all side effects reported per year.

“The strong suspicion that parts of the clinical trial of Pfizer's vaccine were not performed in a scientifically acceptable manner and where the study results cannot be considered reliable

Iran’s Envoy to Yemen Dies of Coronavirus

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to Yemen Hassan Irloo died after contracting the coronavirus, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry said Hassan Irloo, representing Iran in the National Salvation Government of Yemen, was martyred because of the coronavirus infection.

The ministry noted that the late ambassador, who was a victim of chemical attacks during the Iraqi imposed war in the 1980s, had contracted the coronavirus during his mission in Yemen.

Quote

In a tweet on Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said Hassan Irloo needed urgent medical attention days after contracting the infectious disease.

The spokesman had also expressed gratitude to the countries that helped the envoy’s transfer to his homeland for treatment, praising their assistance as “humanitarian act.”

Due to belated cooperation from certain countries, unfortunately the ambassador returned home in inappropriate conditions, the Foreign Ministry said, adding that he was martyred on Tuesday morning although all stages of treatment were provided to help him recover.

Salamu alaykum everyone, I am planning to take the booster but my parents r against me taking it because in the place where I live, they made a new rule stating that it’s people choice to take the vaccine or no. So now what should I do? Is it permissible for me to take it even tho they told me not to?

The evidence appears to be that while there are risks of side-effects from these injections, the risks associated with contracting the virus are greater.

So it's better to take it.

What the situation is if your parents are not keen, I can't say, since norms/laws may vary from country to country and in some countries the extent to which you can act independently will depend on your age.

Personally, the numbers show omicron to be mild and the boosters to be no more effective than none. Everyone except 2 of my 2 dozen family members who were vaccinated have caught the virus and have been sick, including my 88 yr old Mother.

Tremendous amount of hype around injecting a synthetic foreign substance that's never been tested in humans before didn't set well with the medical staff I had around me back in Dec 2020. Still laid up waiting on follow up surgery. I've spent a lot of time looking up the hospital staff concerns. Consensus was, the virus is real, but whatever else is happening doesn't make sense. They were more skeptic than I. Some lost their jobs because they wouldn't get jabbed. In Alberta they are now getting their jobs back. I hope it includes backpay.

It's worth taking a look at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and you'll see peer reviewed sited clinical trials that tell you that you don't need to be near as afraid as they want you to be. The narrative has been a hopeless state of fear mongering.

For example; The Ontario health minister said vitamin D was ineffective and people should not take it as a "cure". That was around the same time as I was in ICU, and around the same time this link was published.

A few days ago, the Kansas City news was that a huge hospital (KU Med in Kansas City, Kansas) had ZERO covid patients in the ICU, alhamdulillah. However, people are still dying from covid every day, so please continue to be careful and practice good hygiene. The new variant Omicron sublineage BA.2 has been spreading.

Quote

WHO will continue to closely monitor the BA.2 lineage as part of Omicron and requests countries to continue to be vigilant, to monitor and report sequences, as well as to conduct independent and comparative analyses of the different Omicron sublineages.

Spread in Massachusetts

An interesting thread.

One line of thought is that spread is currently in wealthier areas, but will spread to those less well off and will be harder to contain when that happens.

Those relatives of yours who got covid despite the vaccine would likely have had a worse outcome if they had not been vaccinated.

Hong Kong - lots of people preferring Chinese traditional medicine to the vaccine and now paying for it with their lives.

I have the ordinary flu jab every year (because I have a heart condition). It does not stop me getting flu, but it really suppresses the symptoms.

Was hoping that someone would explain the difference between pandemic and endemic.

WHAT IS A PANDEMIC?

The World Health Organization (WHO) declares a pandemic when a disease’s growth is exponential. This means the growth rate skyrockets, and each day cases grow more than the day prior.

WHAT DOES ENDEMIC MEAN?

A disease outbreak is endemic when it is consistently present but limited to a particular region. This makes the disease spread and rates predictable.

Iran Celebrates Another No Coronavirus Death Day

"Fortunately, no patients have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, and the number of the dead remains at 141,343," the ministry noted.

It expressed satisfaction that 7,058,349 coronavirus patients have recovered or been discharged from hospitals so far.

The center went on to say that 397 cases infected with COVID-19 are in critical conditions.

It added that 52,419,888 coronavirus diagnosis tests have so far been carried out across the country.

The health ministry public relations warned that no cities are rated red or orange, 147 cities are yellow, and 301 cities are blue.

Coronavirus figures and deaths have been on a downward trend since the government started a mass vaccination campaign.

Quote

In a televised interview in May, Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi touched on the reopening of businesses and schools after a successful vaccination campaign, saying that "today, in addition to importing vaccines, we also have a very high capacity to produce vaccines in the country and even export them”.

The president said his government's measures have brought down the number of daily deaths from the coronavirus pandemic to a one-digit number from hundreds.

Although the US claims that medicines and medical equipment are not under sanctions, they have practically blocked the transfer of Iran’s financial resources in other countries into the Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement (SHTA), former Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said.

Quote

In relevant remarks in August, Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber rapped Washington and its allies for imposing banking sanctions that prevent Iran’s efforts to buy drugs and medical equipment amid a surge in the number of coronavirus infected and deaths in the country.

“Although the arrogant system (led by the US) claims that access to medicine is free for all people and there is no restriction for any country when we want to purchase the needed medicine, they do not allow transfer of money and prevent the drugs’ imports,” Mokhber said, addressing a meeting in Tehran.

He also noted that coronavirus has affected many businesses and the shortage of medicine and treatment-related issues have also placed a heavy burden on the country's budget, saying that these problems need serious planning and efforts to address the problems of businesses that are affected by the COVID-19 epidemic.

Not quite true that the vaccines are working with new variants,  in fact there is now an inverse relationship with vaccination and covid hospitalization and Mortality.

The largest COVID-19 patient population in the Middle East does offer an opportunity to test potential therapies. Iran will participate in the World Health Organization's global megatrial probing the effectiveness of four coronavirus treatments, including a drug combo used against HIV and the antimalarial drug chloroquine. Iranian scientists have launched at least a dozen other clinical trials, exploring the COVID-19 fighting promise of compounds such as tocilizumab, normally used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, and metformin, a diabetes medication. One team is infusing COVID-19 patients with antibody-rich blood of people who recovered fully from the illness. And a group led by Hossein Baharvand, director of the Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Technology, is injecting mesenchymal stem cells into COVID-19 patients to test whether these cells' ability to modulate the immune response and secrete antimicrobial peptides will help subdue the infection.

Iran is also trying a novel approach for killing cancer cells and microbes: cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). The ionized gas generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen molecules that disrupt cell membranes, and perhaps viral proteins. The technique has shown promise for decontaminating surfaces, says Michael Keidar, a plasma physicist and biomedical engineer at George Washington University who is developing a "plasma brush" to sterilize masks and other equipment used while treating COVID-19 patients. CAP has been attempted in only a handful of cancer patients, Keidar says. Applying it to COVID-19 patients, he says, is "very tricky and risky." But Iranian scientists claim encouraging results. A team led by Jalaledin Ghanavi of the National Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease has just completed a safety trial in 14 COVID-19 patients, half of whom received ionized helium administered via an anesthetic mask. The treated patients improved, says Ghanavi, who's now enrolling subjects in a larger clinical trial.

Iran hopes to defeat COVID with home-grown crop of vaccines

Nature talks to vaccine developer Kayhan Azadmanesh about efforts in Iran to develop ten or more COVID jabs, two of which have been approved for use.

Scientists say Iran is one of few Middle Eastern nations with the capacity to develop vaccines. It has been doing so in earnest: around ten are under development and one is already bolstering its vaccination drive, but little is known about these vaccines outside Iran.
Quote

Nature speaks to Kayhan Azadmanesh, a medical doctor and biotechnologist who is head of the virology research division at the Pasteur Institute of Iran in Tehran, about the nation’s vaccine landscape. Azadmanesh also advises the Iranian government and is developing two viral-vector vaccines through his spin-off company Humimmune Biotech.

Which COVID-19 vaccines are available in Iran?

Quote

So far, 18 million or so doses have been administered: some 12 million were China’s Sinopharm vaccine; 4 million were the Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine; and one million were COVIran Barekat, developed by the Iranian state-owned Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group in Tehran. The remainder include doses of Russia’s Sputnik V and India’s Covaxin. More than half a million doses are being administered a day, and some 17% of Iran’s population of 85 million have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Could you tell us about COVIran Barekat?

Quote

It is an inactivated vaccine and is still undergoing phase III trials, but it received emergency-use authorization in June. It was approved on the basis of the levels of antibodies it induces, including those that can ‘neutralize’ SARS-CoV-2, or block it from entering cells. In early trials, the researchers found that more than 93% of vaccinated people produced neutralizing antibodies. We don’t know how long this protection will last, but I assume that it will be similar to that provided by other inactivated vaccines — such as CoronaVac, produced by the Chinese firm Sinovac Life Sciences — for which antibody levels have been shown to drop after six months1, suggesting that boosters are likely to be required.

What other vaccines are being developed in Iran?

Quote

Pasteurcovac is a recombinant-protein vaccine developed in a collaboration between Cuba’s Finlay Institute of Vaccines in Havana and the Pasteur Institute of Iran. The vaccine is known as Soberana 02 in Cuba.

Vaccines developed outside Iran are also currently in clinical trials and being produced locally.

Tell me about the vaccines you are designing?

Quote

My company, Humimmune Biotech, has been working on two vaccine candidates. One uses the measles virus as a backbone to introduce a gene that encodes either the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which the virus uses to enter cells, or the nucleocapsid protein that it requires to replicate. That vaccine is being produced by the Iranian firm BioSun Pharmed in Tehran.

Quote

Most of the COVID-19 vaccines used in Iran so far have been inactivated vaccines, which I expect will mean people will need booster shots next year. Our vaccine could be used as a booster, and a mix-and-match approach might even offer better protection. The technology can also be easily modified against new variants — we have already begun developing a version for Delta.

Why are Iranian scientists creating so many vaccines?

Quote

We have a long history of vaccine production in Iran. The Pasteur Institute of Iran was established in 1920, and has produced vaccines against tuberculosis and rabies. Vaccines have also been developed in Iran against measles, mumps and human papilloma virus.

Why are Iranian researchers reluctant to publicize their work internationally?

This could be another side effect of the sanctions. Researchers in Iran might not want to draw too much attention to their work in case they put potential partnerships in jeopardy before they have achieved a final product, or they run the risk of losing access to raw materials and technologies they need for vaccines.

the researchers developing COVIran Barekat published a preprint of their preclinical results2, and they will share clinical results very soon. We also plan to share the results of our adenovirus-vector vaccine soon.

What have been the biggest challenges in developing COVID-19 vaccines?

The sanctions have caused a lot of difficulty, because they make it hard for us to buy materials and equipment.

Quote

For example, chromatography resins we need to purify vaccines are mostly produced by multinational companies that are major suppliers to the United States, so they might be afraid of selling to us. The United States says that we can apply for exemptions, but, in our experience, that hasn’t worked. But somehow, we find a way. We modify our methods, find other providers, or look for local solutions. We search for the best we can get, but sometimes quality and efficiency are affected.

Also, one of the biggest challenges globally is scale. Prior to the pandemic, Iran primarily had to produce vaccines for children, with a production requirement for each vaccine of around three million doses a year. Now we need about 170 million doses to fully vaccinate the whole population.
