I've been following these fires for some time and it's becoming more and more worrying across NSW and Victoria.

There's news that thousands of Koalas have died! Apparently 30% of the population in NSW.

I'd appreciate it if our dear members down under can provide updates because most news sources are painting a grim picture.

'Up to 30% of koalas on New South Wales's mid-north coast may have been killed and many more may be endangered in South Australia in the country’s ongoing bushfire crisis after experts warned fires are the biggest threat Australian wildlife faces

Nationally, more than 5m hectares have been burned in an unprecedented bushfire season that has also killed nine people'

Do you usually get the fires near you? It seems that this bushfire season has been way worse than previous years.

Sometimes it's not the heat that starts the fire, it could be private/public interests that starts these fires to achieve some financial/political ends we don't understand.

Has happened before, just saying.

Fires' advance forced people to the beaches, into boats and somewhere a few into the water.

As of 31Dec19, 12 million acres have burned continental wide. Australia is just less than 3 million square miles.

The Army was called-up to assist 31Dec.

Smoke from bushfires in Australia has drifted across the Pacific and affected cities in South America, and may have reached the Antarctic, the UN World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday.

Smoke from the fires had already turned skies bright orange over Auckland in New Zealand.

But skies as far away as over central Chile have now gone grey because of the smoke and the WMO cited reports that the sunset in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, had turned red.

l looked up some figues.

24 million acres burned (37,500 square miles)and Australia is just less than 3 million square miles then ~1.2% of Australia has burned.

The contiguous land of the lower 48 states is about exactly the size of Australia, which would be the equivalent of the State of Indiana being burned.

And the 'normal' fire seaon down there started this week.

A total number of 27 people have died in the fires, 5 million hectares of forest burnt and more than 2100 homes have been destroyed.

Insurance claims are nudging the one billion dollar mark.

Australian bush fires are not an anomaly but this year was one of the worst.

Brother, we have had some rain and thunderstorms across some of the affected regions.

But as of Sunday, 69 fires were still burning in the state of New South Wales and 15 in Victoria.

The following link gives an even later report.
