Syria will respond through all legitimate means to Turkish aggression: Assad

Syria will respond through all legitimate means to Turkish aggression: Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says the Damascus government will respond through all legitimate means available to the ongoing ground offensive by Turkish soldiers and allied Takfiri militants against Kurdish forces in the northern part of the war-battered Arab country.

During a meeting with visiting Iraqi National Security Advisor Falih al-Fayyadh in Damascus on Thursday, Assad said foreign schemes in the Middle East region have been foiled throughout history, and the Turkish criminal aggression, launched by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration, on Syria falls within such plots.

“No matter what false slogans could be made up for the Turkish offensive, it is a flagrant invasion and aggression. Syria has frequently hit (Turkish-backed) proxies and terrorists in more than one place. Syria will respond to the assault and confront it anywhere within the Syrian territory through all legitimate means available,” the Syrian leader said.

The meeting was also attended by Syrian Ambassador to Iraq, Sattam al-Dandah.

Assad's remarks came after an unknown source in the Syrian Foreign Ministry earlier on Thursday strongly condemned the ongoing ground offensive by Turkish forces and their allied militants against Kurdish regions of the country.

The source said, “This treacherous Turkish aggression is the outcome of the expansionist ambitions and illusions of Erdogan’s regime, and it affirms that the regime is classified among terrorist groups to which it has provided all forms of support. The offensive deals a heavy blow to the efforts aimed at finding a solution to the crisis in Syria. It makes, therefore, the Turkish regime lose its position as a guarantor of the Astana peace process as its aggression completely contradicts the principles and decisions of the process.”

Assad: Idlib battle basis for ridding Syria of terrorism (+Photos)

October 22, 2019 - 3:59 PM News Code : 984026 Source : SANALink:  Assad: Idlib battle basis for ridding Syria of terrorism (+Photos)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met Syrian Arab Army personnel on frontlines of al-Habit town in Idleb countryside.

During the meeting, President al-Assad said ” Erdogan is a robberHe has robbed the factories, wheat and oil, and today he is robbing the land.”

“All areas in Syria have the same importance, but what governs the priorities is the military situation on the ground,” President al-Assad added.

President al-Assad added “Idleb has been an outpost, and the outpost is usually on the frontline, but in this case the battle is in the east and the outpost is in the west to disperse the forces of the Syrian Arab Army.”

“We have always said and we still say that Idleb battle is basic for ending chaos and terrorism in all the Syrian areas,” President al-Assad said.

He added “When we face an aggression or robbery, we should stand by each other and should coordinate between us, but some Syrians haven’t done that, particularly over the first years of the war… We told them not to bet on the abroad, but on the army, the people and the homeland….Yet they didn’t listen, and currently they are betting on the US.”

President al-Assad said “The first act we have done when the aggression started in the north is to communicate with different political and military forces on the ground, and we said that we are ready to support any group that would resist, and it isn’t a political decision, but a constitutional and national duty, and if we don’t do that, we don’t deserve the homeland.”

Trump Says US Will Remove Sanctions on Turkey

The restrictions were imposed by Washington last week after Ankara launched Operation Peace Spring in Syria, which aimed to clear the US-backed Kurdish militants from near its borders.

US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he would lift the sanctions against Turkey after Ankara announced that the ceasefire in northern Syria is permanent. The decision includes lifting sanctions from Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, Energy Minister Fatih Donmez, and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

Trump noted, however, that the White House will reinstate sanctions if the Turkish forces break their obligations.

"We've saved the lives of many, many Kurds", he stressed, explaining the US actions in the region, adding that his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan "is doing the right thing for his country".

The US president stressed that both Turkey and Syria must ensure that Daesh* doesn't reclaim any territory.

Liberating northern Syria from Kurds 'ultimate goal': Assad

The Syrian head of state said he did not intend to call Turkey an "enemy"و but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and many Turkish political elite were enemies of Syria because of their hostility towards the Arab neighbor.

"We must ensure that we don't turn Turkey into an enemy and here comes the role of friends" such as Russia and Iran, he said.

"Erdogan and his group are enemies, because he leads these policies, but until now most of the political forces in Turkey are against Erdogan’s policies," he argued.

Assad noted that Iran and Russia, as state-guarantors of Syrian peace efforts, have been negotiating with Turkey over the past year.

Iran, Russia condemn US military presence around oil fields in Syria

Iran and Russia have lashed out at US President Donald Trump's plans to keep some American troops in Syria to seize control of the country’s oil reserves.

Separately, Fahrettin Altun, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s communications director, stressed Syria’s right to its own oil reserves, saying, “Syria’s natural resources belong to Syrians.”

“Oil or other types of revenue should be used for reconstruction efforts including local infrastructure, support for civilians, IDPs (internally displaced persons), and refugees. Just as Syrians should be able to determine their own political future, they should also be allowed to decide how the resources of their own land should be spent,” he tweeted.

On Sunday, Trump announced that US troops would remain in Syria to “secure” oil reserves and even put up “a hell of a fight” against any force that tried to take them.

Turkey kills senior PKK terrorist in northern Iraq

Turkish forces have killed one of the most wanted members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group during a counter-terrorism operation in Iraq’s northern semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

A security source, requesting not to be named, said on Monday that Musluh Ike, better known by the nom de guerre Tekoser Zagros, was “neutralized” in a a joint precision operation by Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in Metina region of northern Iraq.

The Turkish military generally uses the term "neutralize" to signify that the militants were killed, captured or surrendered.

Ike was reportedly in charge of Metina region. He joined the PKK in the 1990s, and was the mastermind of many acts of terror in the Semdinli and Cukurca districts of Turkey’s southeastern province of Hakkari.

White Helmets found dead near his home in Istanbul

White Helmets found dead near his home in Istanbul

The founder of the White Helmets in Syria has been found dead in Istanbul, it has been confirmed.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA):

James Le Mesurier, who was a former British army officer, had come under increasing scrutiny lately over alleged links to terrorist groups in Syria.

Only three days ago, Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, called on Britain to “clarify” Le Mesurier’s precise role, asking whether he had links to “al-Qaeda”.

Zakharova also asserted what is widely known, namely that Le Mesurier had previously served in the UK’s “foreign intelligence” service, a thinly-veiled reference to MI6.

Formed in 2014, the White Helmets is an intensely controversial organisation. It purports to be a civil defence group but critics and neutral observers alike have accused it of close links to multiple terrorist groups in Syria, including the local branch of al-Qaeda.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Russia’s Vladimir Putin discussed Turkey’s military offensive in Syria in a phone call on Saturday, Turkey’s presidency said.

Erdogan later agreed a separate deal with Moscow, which also called for the YPG to withdraw at least 30 km (nearly 20 miles) from the border, but has since said that neither Washington nor Moscow has been able to deliver on the deals.

The Turkish statement on Saturday said Erdogan and Putin confirmed their commitment to the accord they struck at a meeting in the Black Sea resort of Sochi which also paved the way for joint Russian-Turkish military patrols inside Syria.

It said the two men also discussed bilateral trade, but gave no further details.

The Turkish president is due to hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday.

Adherence to firm principles, most important strength factor in fight against terrorism: Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday received Chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Committee at the Iranian Shura Council Mojtaba Zonnouri and the accompanying delegation.

President al-Assad clarified that adherence to firm principles is the most important strength factor of the axis of combating terrorism.

He said that we and our friends will continue to confront the ambitions of the West and its colonial states by hitting their agents and mercenaries who have been defeated in many areas.

President al-Assad pointed out that Syria supports any attempts to find a solution to the situation in it.

‘Attempts are being made to suggest that the solution to the war would be achieved through the committee of discussing constitution, and that is not true because the war in Syria did not arise because of disagreement or division regarding the Constitution but began because there are terrorism that began to kill, intimidate and sabotage; and therefore the war ends when terrorism ends,” President al-Assad explained.

For his part, Zonnouri congratulated Syria’s leadership and people over the victories achieved against terrorism, affirming that what combines Iran and Syria is beyond tactical issues on the ground, it is one destiny and a common honorable history.

Erdogan calls for solidarity day against Islamophobia

The Turkish president on Wednesday called on the UN, international and regional organizations to designate March 15 as International Solidarity Day Against Islamophobia.

"Those who claim defending democracy and human rights play ostrich when it comes to Muslims, and migrants are abused in their own lands,” Erdogan said.

On March 15, at least 50 Muslims were killed and as many injured when a terrorist shot worshippers in cold blood at two mosques in New Zealand.

Erdogan said Israel is not respecting Palestinians’ right to life, property and work, and jeopardizing future of all world together with regional countries.

“Those who are trying to turn Jerusalem, which is a sacred city for three religions, into a center of their beliefs by looting it are making a big mistake,” Erdogan said.

The Turkish president stressed that the Western countries were “spoiling Israel knowingly or unknowingly”, which was just fueling tensions.

“Turkey is resolute to continue defending the rights of our Palestinians brothers and sisters in all platforms,” he added.

Bomb attack leaves five dead in Turkish-controlled northern Syrian town

At least five people, including three children, have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries when a car rigged with explosives went off in an area of Syria’s northeastern province of al-Hasakah, controlled by Turkish military forces and their allied militants ever since they launched a ground offensive against militants from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

ABNA: The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack took place on Thursday afternoon in Tal Halaf village, which lies west of the strategic border city of Ra’s al-Ayn.

The Turkish Defense Ministry blamed YPG militants for the explosion in a post on Twitter.

On November 26, a car bomb killed at least 17 people and wounded 20 others in the same Syrian village.

Turkey’s Defense Ministry blamed the attack on the Kurdish YPG militants at the time.

“The PKK/YPG terror group continues its car bombings aimed at civilians. The child murderers this time detonated a car bomb in Tal Halaf village west of Ra’s al-Ayn, killing 17 people and wounding more than 20,” the ministry said on its official Twitter account then.

On October 9, Turkish military forces and Ankara-backed militants launched a long-threatened cross-border invasion of northeastern Syria in a declared attempt to push YPG militants away from border areas.

Ali Akbar Velayati made the remarks in his meeting with the Syrian Ambassador in Iran in presence of a delegation of tribal chiefs and tribal sheikhs on Saturday morning.

He pointed to the US president's irrational stance, saying that the US president declares that the US uses the Syrian of oil reserves, it is an illegal act, an obvious theft and blatant violation of International Law.

He added that property of each country belongs to the same nation and these positions represent conspiracy and malicious acts of enemies for the Islamic countries of the region and one must resist these blatant violations and theft of the oppressed nation's property.

He said that Iran is against creating a buffer zone by foreigners in Syria and foreign interference in Syria or elsewhere in the region, because it means geopolitical shift in the region and separating countries and handing it over to foreigners. That is in conflict with Syrian interests.

Velayati said that Iran opposes the US plan to support the opposition of the Syrian government, adding that they they have committed many crimes in Syria and that by such a plan would mean a practical breakdown of Syria.

"If a change in the Syrian constitution is to be made only by the Syrian people and without intervention of any other country, we are confident that the Syrian people and government will soon release Idlib and reach the Euphrates because the region will become a nation," he said.

Iran's President hold phone talks with Erdogan, Putin on Idlib issue

“The issue of Idlib is very complicated given the community of dangerous terrorists and the protection of the lives of innocent people living in the area, which on the one hand must protect human lives and on the other, the terrorists must be eradicated,” said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday.

“Certainly, increasing the tension is not in the interest of anyone in the region, and we must resolve the issues through dialogue and should not allow the Astana process to weaken,” he added.

He also suggested holding trilateral summit of Iran, Turkey and Syria to resolve Idlib issue, saying, “We can resolve differences at this meeting, given our agreement on principles such as preserving Syria's territorial integrity, eradicating terrorists, preserving the lives of innocent people, and quickly resolving the issue of Idlib.”

After his conversation with Turkish President on Saturday evening, Rouhani also held phone talks with Vladimir Putin.

No further details about the talk have been yet revealed by the official website of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

1/Evidently #Russia has many limitations and concerns when it comes to an armed confrontation with #Turkey, something which has become increasingly apparent with its decisions in Syria, it does not want to enter a direct war with Turkey. 4/The Turkish military through artillery and precise drones have been targeting with much success hundreds of Syrian positions, amour, & installations since the Turkish backed recapture of Saraqib which has heavily damaged the SAA (pro-government media has been coy on casualties). / Turkey has done more harm to the Syrian army in days than whole areas & sectors did in years of fighting, the Syrian military has shown a complete lack of ability to deal with Turkish drones, videos of Turkish-inflicted carnage caused some criticism towards the Russians.  6/ For SAA it has been loss after loss with regards to men and equipment since #Turkey began hitting positions & amour, which tells us why advances have been so slow in certain areas &casualties high. Turkish drones have been over Idlib like hornets over the last few days. 7/ Images of captured Syrian amour also show the rare use of camouflage, suggesting measures have been taken to decrease vulnerability to drone strikes, meaning they have been getting targeted for a while now, and the Russians have been able to provide no assistance or reprieve .8/ There still is time for #Russia to re-assert its dominance, but even then, no real desire exists to enter a long-drawn-out proxy confrontation with #Turkey in #Idlib, Russia’s main interests in #Syria (vis-à-vis the U.S., Israel, and Turkey – ed.) have been secured. 9/ #Russia supports the Syrian army with air strikes, but in return it has no willingness to do anything else, its economic interests are secured (taking over Syrian gas & phosphates. etc.), it wants to reap the benefits of its intervention (at the expense of Assad and Iran – ed.) not get drawn into to a regional war. 11/ For the Syrian army, the situation was catastrophic, and the large losses in manpower and equipment have not only added up, but have paralyzed the Syrian army around #Idlib, meaning a well-planned militant offensive could reverse most SAA gains this month. 12/ Whilst its difficult to provide estimations, perhaps SAA casualties have averaged around 50 a day since #Turkey began using armed drones, fighting on the front-lines included. The equipment losses have been considerable, but conspicuously easier to replace. 16/NATO & U.S government have decided to back Turkey, at least politically and Erdoğan has held an intransigent stance on #Idlib, so who will back down? Turkey cannot afford to, but Russia may have allowed Syrian forces to be smashed to pieces by drones as a way to appease Turkey (and Israel – ed.). 17/ There has been a rising anti-Russian tone since #Turkey began its drone strikes. #Syria also faces an air-defense problem, whatever acceptable defenses it has are based in the south, its defenses in north are isolated, small in number, ineffective and susceptible to jamming (and Russia shut down the S-300s to appease Israel – ed.)18/ Whilst the strikes which killed two dozen Turkish soldiers are highly significant and represent an escalation of the type we haven’t seen before, the Turkish response has been deadly for SAA, perhaps ending any further serious Idlib offensive in the immediate future. 23/ Syrian sources have told me that the Russians request that the roads are left clear by SAA for the convoys going into the (Turkish observation – ed.) posts, and that they are left unhindered by Syrian forces, much to some Syrian annoyance. 27/ Turkish strikes In Idlib have added another dimension to this escalation by killing members of Hezbollah and Iranian-backed groups, the Iranian “Centre in #Syria” issued a clear threat, stating that “We are able to take revenge but did not on the orders of our leadership (meaning the civilian pro-Western reformists such as Rouhani who have successfully nullified the Supreme Leader and IRGC – ed.).” 29/ Given the fact that the Iranian backed forces have been scarcely fighting on the front-lines in #Idlib, it is plausible that further Turkish strikes on installations in Aleppo or Hama could have more chance of killing Iranian backed forces.

3. My sense is that #Putin and #Erdoğan may have had some kind of agreement that allowed #Turkey to face-off SAA one-on-one (as I predicted before w/out RUS support Syrian army finds it difficult to defend, let alone attack) but avoid targeting RUS servicemen, facilities, etc. 4. #Erdoğan thus saves face domestically, #Turkey shows #Assad what he's really worth, #Russia suffers some reputation losses (for not standing up for SAA) but at the end of the day will use the situation to make Assad more flexible to accepting whatever deal Putin & Erdoğan clinch. 5. In other words, RUS has all capabilities to avert all the attacks TUR now launches, but stays away - loses tactically - to reap strategic benefits from a grand deal with TUR and, ultimately b/n TUR and SYR (on border control, buffer zones, etc.). 6. The key unknown in this to me are implications of TUR attacks on Hezbollah targets. RUS telegram channels report this statement as allegedly coming from #Iran/ian embassy in #Syria. Among other things it says...7."We remind TUR people that their sons been within range of our weapons for over a month&we can retaliate. The gov’t. of Iran informed President Erdoğan that we'll strike with full force if TUR army continues to bomb our facilities and Syrian army." NOW, can anyone confirm it or it's fake?

Washington has managed to "cut off probably over 95 percent of the oil revenues" of Iran, according to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. ... "I sat down with the Chinese officials. They flew in a delegation to meet with us and the State Department to talk about this. They've cut off all of the state companies from buying oil, and we're working closely with them to make sure that they cease all additional oil activities," Mnuchin said.

It is also no secret that Yeltsin was more fearful of Yevgeny Primakov, foreign minister (1996-98) and then prime minister (September 1998-May 1999) than any other Russian politician of the time; and that Yeltsin picked Sergei Kirienko to be prime minister in 1978 and Vladimir Putin prime minister in 1999 because he regarded them as obedient ciphers who would follow his orders without questioning. About Primakov to Clinton, Yeltsin had nothing good to say. By contrast, Kirienko, Yeltsin told Clinton on the telephone on April 6, 1998, was “a very vigorous politician, a very skilful politician, and I think he’ll build good rapport with [Vice President Albert] Gore.”

Putin, Yeltsin said in a telephone call on September 9, 1999, was dependable. He is “a solid man…thorough and strong, very sociable. And he can easily have good relations and contact with people who are his partners.” In another telephone call on November 9, 1999,  Yeltsin described Putin to Clinton as “a democrat and he knows the West… He’s tough internally, and I will do everything possible for him to win, legally of course. And he will win. You’ll do business together. He will continue the Yeltsin line on democracy and (neoliberal – ed.) economics and widen Russia’s contacts. ...

Last week  Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s (pro-Turkish – ed.) spokesman,  made the point that the president was unhappy at the disclosure. This time the Americans, according to Peskov, “did not coordinate it or hold any consultations. These [records] are not always liable to declassifying.”

The secret in the Yeltsin-Clinton archive revealed for the first time is the secret President Putin didn’t want anyone to know. Anyone Russian, that is. ...

Despite their differences, Russian analysts agree it was Clinton’s attack on Milosevic and the NATO bombing of Serbia which confirmed Primakov’s assessment that no negotiations with the US are possible for Russia short of unconditional submission; and that the US strategy for Russia requires nothing less than surrender. They agree Yeltsin’s record was one of capitulation, successful only in that it kept Yeltsin in power, his domestic allies in money, and his heart ticking.

Notably, it was also Tehran that persuaded Moscow to step in if it did not want Syria, its long-standing ally, to fall into the U.S. orbit and change the broader balance of power in the region, a likely potential outcome if the rebellion had managed to unseat Assad. ...

While the Turkish military offensive against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria might, once again, bring Moscow and Tehran together tactically in support of Assad’s rule and Syrian sovereignty, the two powers have fundamentally different visions for the war-ravaged country’s future. Moscow sees Syria in the broader framework of its global role as a major power in an emerging ... multipolar system...

It is no wonder that the Kremlin has been facilitating the Assad government’s reintegration into the (pro-Western – ed.) Arab fold, which for the most part fell out with Damascus...

...Moscow came up with a new “security concept” for the Persian Gulf. “The central long-term objective,” according to the document, “is the creation of a security and cooperation organization in the Persian Gulf that would include, in addition to the Gulf countries, Russia, China, the U.S., the E.U., India, and other stakeholders as observers or associated members.

Iran also seems determined to forge a new layer of deterrence in its asymmetrical regional security structure by using Syria as a forward base to balance against Israel (to deter Israel from directly attacking the IRI – ed.). This is what has come to be known as Iran’s policy of “strategic depth” — that is, to take the fight as close to enemy territory as possible.

Such an ambition, however, does not dovetail well with the Russian vision, which attaches great importance to close ties with Israel and considers Israeli security essential for the viability of its regional strategy. This partly explains why Moscow has mostly tried — to Tehran’s frustration and occasional objections — to look the other way as Israel has continued to target Iran-linked positions and paramilitary forces (as well as the SAA – ed.) in Syria and beyond.

In January, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov rebuffed the idea of an “alliance” between the two powerbrokers in Syria, cautioning that, “I wouldn't use this type of words to describe where we are with Iran.”

The Iranian leadership has concerns that the Kremlin may potentially seek to negotiate side agreements with its adversaries such as the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE on the Syria file that could undermine Tehran’s interests. Given that Russia shares those actors’ concerns about the role of Iranian-sponsored Shi’a militias — such as Lebanese HezbollahFatemiyoun Division, and Liwa Zeinabiyoun — Tehran and Moscow are at odds over their role in Syria. Although Moscow has coordinated military operations with some Iranian-backed militia forces in key battles against ISIS, the relative erosion of the so-called caliphate might partly account for the Kremlin’s condoning of Israeli attacks against these groups in Syria and Iraq.

Moscow also regards post-war reconstruction in Syria as a unique opportunity to consolidate its economic interests in the Levant by securing lucrative long-term concessions and boosting the presence of Russian state-affiliated and private sector businesses, in areas from mining to oil exploration to industrial manufacturing. This constitutes yet another major area of competition between Syria’s two main state allies.

In January 2017, Iran and Syria signed five memoranda of understanding, including contracts for mining phosphate, supplying mobile phone services, and installing oil and gas terminals. Then, earlier this year, the Syrian government reportedly leased to Iran the Latakia container port, Syria’s main commercial port, and the two countries have plans to build a power plant in the city as well. Unsurprisingly, Moscow has been holding negotiations with Damascus to finalize the lease of the Tartus port, which already hosts a Russian naval base on the Mediterranean, for 49 years.

At the same time, the (Turkish – ed.) incursion has presented a tough dilemma for Tehran, now that Syrian government forces have been dispatched to the north to defend SDF-held areas, raising the likelihood of direct confrontation between Syria and Turkey, both of which have close ties with Iran. Tehran is reluctant to intervene with its Shi’a militia forces and confront Turkey directly on behalf of Assad, partly because it does not want to alienate Ankara at a time of U.S. “maximum pressure,” preferring instead to let others take care of the situation.

While the Islamic Republic is opposed to Kurdish autonomy in northern Syria, it cannot afford to let a Turkish-led rebel statelet be established in the north, from which the anti-Assad alliance can project power in Iraq and north Lebanon. It would disrupt the broader balance of power and undermine the plausibility of Iran’s regional ambitions centered on a unified and friendly Syria.

Ryabkov added that Iran was also aware of Russia's position. "The Israelis know this, the U.S. knows this, everyone else, including the Iranians, the Turks, the government in Damascus. This is one of the top priorities of Russia, The Times of Israel quoted him as having said. ...

Ryabkov's statement on the denial of the Iran-Russia alliance was made one day after Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the head of the Iranian parliamentary committee for foreign relations and national security spoke about "serious criticism of Russia's behavior," adding that Russia de-activated the S-300 anti-missile systems when Israel attacked Syrian and Iranian targets.

Falahatpisheh told the Iranian press, "It appears there is some sort of coordination between Israeli strikes and the Russian air defense units based in Syria."

It is not clear why Iranian leaders seem to be so surprised at Russia’s decision not to confront the Israeli air force in Syria. It could mean they expected Moscow to issue different orders to its forces and now find themselves exposed to Israeli air attacks.

@Ashvazdanghe

So far, Iran is losing significant ground in Syria and Iraq because Russia, China, and India are siding with the U.S., Israel, and Turkey. The loss of General Soleimani and top PMU commanders deprives Iran of experienced personnel with which to coordinate operations and share intelligence about the likes of Daesh et al. Furthermore, Iranian interests in both Syria and Iraq lack adequate air defences and are thus utterly exposed to Western intervention. The IRGC and Supreme Leader have also proven themselves utterly powerless to do anything about the reformists’ influence in Iranian society and government.
