Trump’s Iran Policy Needs a History Lesson

Donald Trump should be mindful of Saddam Hussein’s experience invading Iran nearly forty years ago, lest he endure the same fate.

Do not threaten us with war, we are alive

We have entrusted our swords with our answer to you

The word ‘surrender’ has been erased from our vocabulary

These were the words passionately chanted by a Shiite Maddahi performer in Iran in September 2018. As a part of commemorating the holy month of Muharram, Shiites often gather and listen to eulogistic tributes to their archetypal hero, Imam Hossein. Ashura—marking the tenth day of Muharram—is a day of lamentation, as Shiites the world over memorialize the martyrdom of Hossein and the epic tale from seventh-century Karbala that came to define their religion and inform their worldview.

The headline of the newspaper article to which the above is a comment says:

Iran suffering ‘severe distress’ from US sanctions, says IMF

At the end of the article it says:

Meanwhile government revenues have stabilised, thanks to an increase in tax revenues, while a shortage of hard currency caused by the dramatic drop-off in petrodollar earnings has been compensated to some extent by an increase in non-oil exports, in particular to neighbours such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Saeed Laylaz, a reform-minded political economy analyst, said the IMF’s forecast did not reflect many people’s experience. “If the economy was contracting by 9.5 per cent this year, we should have been witnessing the collapse of the economy now but we do not see any signs of it,” he said. One explanation for the divergence between official data and the situation on the ground could be underground imports and exports, he added. These used to comprise between an estimated 30 and 50 per cent of Iran’s economy, but after sanctions were levied they “probably surpassed 50 per cent”.

Salam the major problem in Iran industry is that government authorities don’t believe to young generation of engineers and experts & want to buy everything from foreign countries  but in every field that IRGC trusted young generation they could pass barriers but even people in Iran under influence of anti regime media are complaining that IRGC wants everything for itself not people of Iran & recently IRGC made new educational jet fighter that fair foreign experts said itks rival of American jet fighters but anti regime media like MKO media made jokes about it & naive people accept their propaganda like as previous years that IRGC made an aeroplane for passengers but authorities stand against commercializing it & anti regime media made fun of it but IRGC still uses it’s product as a safe plane to transfer his forces.

Hmm.. simply said, it sounds like nepotism and پارتی بازی is running (read: ruining) the show. What measures does the law/system have in place to ensure that appointments and decision making authority is given on competence basis, and not on "who you know" "what family you are from" and "what you/some relative of yours did during jebhe"? If these measures exist in the law, to what level do the citizens demand accountability and upholding of these values? I mean every day pro regime citizens, not the anti regime types.

Why does the government allow MKO and other similar organisations to send propaganda into Iran? Can't they ban it?

Americans at the best of times are not very interested in history, they do not have the same "historical consciousness", that a lot of Europeans and Middle Easterners have.

Blocking US infiltration into Iran based on religious principles: IRGC

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has issued a statement on Sunday on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the US embassy takeover in Tehran by the Iranian students to stress the necessity of the ban on negotiations with the US.

“Blocking the US political infiltration in Iran and its dominance over the country through refusing to negotiate with the Great Satan is a policy based on religious and logical principles [of the Islamic Republic],” according to the IRGC statement issued a day ahead of the 40th anniversary of the US embassy takeover in Tehran by Iranian students on November 4, 1979.

Iran marks anniversary of US embassy takeover

Iran marks anniversary of US embassy takeover

The Iranian people, mostly students, took part in nationwide rallies on Monday to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran and condemn the US policies against the Islamic Republic.

On November 4, 1979, and in less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students who called themselves "students following the line of (the late) Imam (Khomeini)" seized the US embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage and planning to overthrow the newly established Islamic system in Iran.

The students who seized the embassy later published documents proving that the compound was indeed engaged in plans and measures to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

Every year on the 13th day of the Iranian month of Aban (which this year falls on November 4), the Iranian nation, particularly students, hold rallies across the country to mark the day.

In November 2018, the US government decided to re-impose what it calls crippling sanctions on Iran on the anniversary of the embassy takeover.

In remarks on Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the dispute between Tehran and Washington has its roots in the 1953 coup led by the US and United Kingdom intelligence agencies against the country.

“The Americans distort history and pretend that the Iran-US disputes stem from the takeover of the US embassy. No! It goes back to the 1953 coup d'état, when the US overthrew a national government – which, of course, had made the mistake of trusting the United States - and established its corrupt and puppet government in Iran,” the Leader said in a gathering of students.
