Prominent French member of Ahlulbayt World Assembly passes away / Pics

Dr... Yahya Bono, an active and French member of the Ahlul Bayt World Assembly, passed away in Ivory Coast.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA): Dr... Yahya Bono, an active and French member of the Ahlul Bayt World Assembly and translator who rendered the Holy Qur'an into French passed away in Ivory Coast.

He was off to the Africa to carry out the Muharram propaganda program and died in a marine accident on Monday at Ivory Coast.

Yahya Bono was a prominent figure in the fields of Qur'anic sciences, philosophy and mysticism and was a Shiite translator and author who was a defender of the privacy of Islam and the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

Bonaud was born into a Catholic French family in the German city of Freiburg in 1957. He lived in Germany and Algeria until the age of 10 and then moved to the French city of Strasburg.

He got interested in oriental religions and started studying works on these religions, making trips to different countries like Spain, Morocco, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

He then studied the works of French Muslim philosopher Rene Guenon and inspired by his works embraced Islam in 1979, changing his name to Yahya.

Bonaud got his PhD from the French University of Sorbonne in 1995. His dissertation titled “Theology in Imam Khomeini’s Philosophical and Mystical works” was selected as the research of the year in 1999.

When working on his thesis, Bonaud came to Iran and studied Islamic philosophy and mysticism with Sayyed Jalal Ashtiani in Mashhad.

Due to his deep devotion to Imam Reza (عليه السلام), Bonaud lived in Mashhad for 15 years and was recognized as a servant of Imam Reza (عليه السلام) in 2001.

In recent years, he worked on his post-doctoral degree featuring Mulla Sadra’s Al-Hikmat Al-Muta'liya (transcendent theosophy).

He also translated the Qur'an into the French language.

There are more than 30 translations of the Holy Qur'an in French. Some of these renditions, especially the earlier ones done by orientalists, are no lacking in ideological prejudices. Some others have weaknesses in content and conveying the message of the Qur'an. The third group, rendered by Muslims themselves, are not fluent in French.

Hence, Bonaud and Javad Hadidi, a seminary scholar who has a PhD in French language and literature, embarked on translating the Qur'an at the invitation of the Tarjoman-e Vahy (translation of revelation) Institute.

They aimed to present a new rendering of the Qur'an in French that is free from weaknesses other renderings have.

The translation by Bonaud and Hadidi is the result of three years of joint efforts. It has been published in 624 pages and includes explanations about Surahs Fatiha and Baqara, word-for-word translation of the verses, a brief account of the studies about certain words or verses, and an Arabic-French glossary.

The two made efforts not to be influenced by previous translations and to translate the Qur'an using Qur'an exegeses and Arabic sources, which has been unprecedented in Qur'an translation into European languages.

His body will be transferred to Iran's Mashhad for funeral and burial.

Ayatollah Ramezani issued message of condolences on passing of Dr. Yahya Alavi Bonaud

Ayatollah Reza Ramazani, the Secretary-General of Ahlul-Bayt ((عليه السلام).) World Assembly issued a message wherein he expressed condolences on the passing away of Dr.. Yahya Alavi Bonaud.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA): Ayatollah Reza Ramazani, the Secretary-General of Ahlul-Bayt ((عليه السلام).) World Assembly issued a message wherein he expressed condolences on the passing away of Dr.. Yahya Alavi Bonaud.

The text of the message is as follows:

IN THE NAME OF Allah, THE COMPASSIONATE, THE MERCIFUL

And whoever leaves his home migrating toward Allah and His Messenger, and is then overtaken by death, his reward shall certainly fall on Allah, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful. [the Holy Qur'an]

The sudden death of Dr.. Yahya Alavi Bonaud, a virtuous thinker and a French member of the Ahlul-Bayt World Assembly caused great regret and deep sorrow in our hearts.

In his adventurous life, the late Dr.. Bonaud was a perfect example of a truth-seeking man, crossing various religious and geographical boundaries to gain knowledge.

He found the school of Ahlul-Bayt ((عليه السلام).) as the most ideal path he was looking for; therefore, for long years he struggled hard in the field of study and research to acquire the enlightening teachings of the Ahlul-Bayt school of thought.

He was much fascinated by the late Imam Khomeini, which opened new doors of mysticism to him, making him a struggling man who worked for the sake of God instead of being engaged in monasticism and passivity.

The end of his exploratory life and the final destination of his search for the truth was such determined that he passed away in an accident at the beginning of a missionary trip to Africa on the threshold of the month of Muharram to promote the name and message of Imam Hussein ((عليه السلام).). Thus, he was an immigrant towards Almighty God and His Messenger, and his truth-seeking spirit rested in peace.

Undoubtedly, his enduring works in various fields of Quranic sciences, philosophy and mysticism - in particular his translation of the Holy Qur'an into French - are among the righteous deeds, the benefits of which he will enjoy forever .

On behalf of all members of the Ahlul-Bayt World Assembly, I offer my heartfelt condolences on this irreparable loss to Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him), and then to the Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei, Shiite scholars, academic figures, his pupils, colleagues, lovers, and family members.

I beseech Almighty God to elevate his status in the hereafter and bestow patience and abundant rewards upon his close relatives.

Reza Ramazani
Secretary-General of the Ahlul-Bayt ((عليه السلام).) World Assembly

pictures of his Burial beside Amadou Hampâté Bâ

Under the guidance of Sheikh Amadou Hampâté Bâ (c. 1900-1 – 1991), an African gnostic and spiritual leader, he re-converted to Shia Islam and adopted the name of ‘Yahya’. Bonaud did his doctoral dissertation in Sorbonne University in French on the late Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khomeini, entitled “The Philosophical Works of ʾImām Khumaynī”, which was chosen as the year’s best research in 1999.

While writing his thesis, he spent seven years in Iran studying under the guidance of Seyyed Jalal-ed-Din Ashtiani in Mashhad. He lived in the northeastern Iranian city for 15 years. Bonaud has left behind valuable translations, writings and interpretations in French about Quranic verses. His French translation of the Holy Qur'an was published in Qom in 2000.

Beyond this enumeration, it is neither possible nor desirable on the present occasion to attempt a fuller presentation of the Imam's contribution to the discipline of ‘irfan; it will be enough to refer the reader to Yahya Christian Bonaud's L'Imam Khomeyni, un gnostique méconnu du XXe siecle (Beirut, 1997), an excellent work of both synthesis and analysis.
