As salaamun aleikum brothers and sisters,

Does anyone here knows what the rule is regarding if we are to count the spacer on a tasbeeh as a bead or not when doing istikahara? Some spacers are very small and slim and are "hardly there" where as other tasbeehs have spacers as large as the beads themselves.

An answer from a marja or high up scholar is prefered over guesses or practices derived from personal ijtihad. Links are also greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

So the spacer counts as a bead then?

salam alykum wrwb,

aren't prayer beads used for counting purposes? Thus a spacer is not counted depending on the Amal & the tasbih counter type.

Salam. The two spacer beads are to separate the other beads into three sections of 33 beads, so that Tasbih of Fatima can be performed: 34 times Allah-o-Akbar (Takbir), 33 times Alhamdulillah (Tahmid) and 33 times Subhanallah (Tasbih).

If you are reciting dikhr a certain number of times (33, 34, 72, 100, etc.) you can just touch the spacer bead and recite as you wish or remain silent, going on to the next bead. If you know that one of your beads broke off and that section has only 32 beads then you can use the spacer bead when you are doing tasbeeh (reciting dikhr).

When using the tasbeeh to do istikhara, you can use the spacer beads, because it's not the number of beads that you are counting but to reach the end of the tasbeeh and see how many beads are left at the end (one or two?).

Quote

If only one bead remains in the end do what you want to do and if two beads are left do not do it.  Doing or not doing is optional not compulsory.

assuming that @Shia farm girl is content I'd like to ask about istikhara & it's recommendation in the Qur'an ia.

Istikhara, Seeking the best from Allah

A must read before we discuss this topic :book:

alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah.

So it is that which we've been doing. Seeking the best from Allah(سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). By supplication & the spiritual one. alhamdulillah.

There's a lot to learn, it being right or wrong is part of learning & a lot to do, it being done right or wrong will be according to His(سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) mercy.

Quoting...

"We have mentioned the conditions for a proper Istikhara in writing and the people can refer to the book `Qawa'id al‑Fiqhiha' in the last discussion on `casting lots' for more information."

What is meant by casting lots?

it's just that istikhara is what we've been doing all along alhamdulillah. So Insha'Allah am hoping we'd start towards the end & moving towards the beginning. Hence the question being about another discussion for in its broader sense our asking/seeking the best from Allah(سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) has nothing to do with us 'hindering or making some one's path crooked. Maybe in that discussion about 'casting lots' they talk about the removal of 'cast lots'...

Where one seeks for Allah's intervention in making a choice between different available alternatives. E.g when picking a name for a child, if you cannot decide between 3 or 4 names, you write them on strips of paper, invoke istikhara (Allah to choose the best for you) then pick one/get one picked.

I haven't quite gotten what you mean here. I blame the exhaustion entirely. InshaAllah I will look at it again in the morning and possibly have a coherent response.

alhamdulillah, thanks, that won't be necessary as it lingered on your reply about casting spells.
