Salam all. I wish to share with you all news of the death of ayatullah Muhammad Asif al-Muhsini. You probably do not know him, but he is one of the greatest and hardest working hadith scholars in our history. He was a student of Khu'I, Muhsin al-Hakim, and others. He complied a compendium that tries to comprehensively gather all of the reliable hadiths in our Shi`a corpus, which Islamic Salvation has been translating and posting on ShiaChat (hyperlink), as well as many other works. Much more could be said, but it would be nice if we could carry out a "khatam" of Qur'an for this great scholar.

Al-Kafi: A number of our companions from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from `Uthman b. `Isa from Abi Ayyub al-Kharraz from Sulayman b. Khalid from Abi `Abdillah [a]. He said: There is no-one amongst the believers who dies (whose death) is more beloved to Iblis than the death of a faqih (true scholar)!

Muhsini graded this hadith mu`tabar (reliable) as per his Mu`jam Ahadith al-Mu`tabarah, volume 1, page 51.

This is a great loss for the Shi'a world, the Muslims of Afghanistan and of course Shi'I scholarship. He was a student of Sayyid Muhsin al-Hakim and Sayyid Khu'I and was known for his discussions on Rijal, Hadith and Fiqh. Many seminary students will become aware of him through his work Buhuth fi 'Ilm al-Rijal, but anyone familiar with him more than that would know he had written over a 100 works, some of which are Sirat al-Haq (3 vols.), Mashra'at Bihar al-Anwar (2 vols.), Mu'jam al-Ahadith al-Mu'tabara (8 vols.), Hudud al-Shari'ah (2 vols.), al-Fiqh wa Masa'il al-Tibbiyyah (2 vols.), 'Adalah al-Sahaba and many other.

He was very politically and socially active in Afghanistan (enumerating these activities would require a post of their own) and I personally witnessed his close proximity with Sayyid Khamenei in 2015 as he casually walked out of a hotel (where, as per strict protocol, no one was allowed to leave without getting permission from higher authorities) and when asked where he was going, said, "khune-ye agha!" (to the house of Agha - Khamenei). Later I came to know in some more detail the relationship of the two scholars (primarily in the context of Shaykh Muhsini's political activities in Afghanistan).

In January 2015, I briefly met him and had an opportunity to speak with him. At the end of our conversation, as it is custom amongst the students, I asked him for some final words of advise. He began to cite a very short tradition regarding the merits of reciting the al-tasbihat al-arb'ah, but was unable to finish the tradition as he began to choke on his tears of fear as he attempted to say La Ilaha Illallah. I was left dumbfounded and humbled beyond words.

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ ضُرَيْسٍ الْكُنَاسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ: مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص بِرَجُلٍ يَغْرِسُ غَرْساً فِي حَائِطٍ لَهُ فَوَقَفَ لَهُ وَ قَالَ أَ لَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى غَرْسٍ أَثْبَتَ أَصْلًا وَ أَسْرَعَ إِينَاعاً وَ أَطْيَبَ ثَمَراً وَ أَبْقَى قَالَ بَلَى فَدُلَّنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَ أَمْسَيْتَ فَقُلْ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ فَإِنَّ لَكَ إِنْ قُلْتَهُ بِكُلِّ تَسْبِيحَةٍ عَشْرَ شَجَرَاتٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْفَاكِهَةِ وَ هُنَّ مِنَ الْبَاقِيَاتِ الصَّالِحَاتِ قَالَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَإِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَّ حَائِطِي هَذَا صَدَقَةٌ مَقْبُوضَةٌ عَلَى فُقَرَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَهْلِ الصَّدَقَةِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ آيَاتٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ- فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطى‏ وَ اتَّقى‏ وَ صَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنى‏ فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرى‏

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Mahbub from Malik ibn ‘Atiyyah from Durays al-Kunasi from Abu Ja’far (a) who said:

“The Messenger of Allah once was passing by a man who was planting a plant in his yard. The Holy Prophet stopped and asked, ‘Should I tell you about a plantation that has stronger roots, ripens faster and is of finer fruits?’ The man said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, tell me about it.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘In the morning and evenings say, “Glory belongs to Allah, all praise belongs to Allah, no one deserves to be worshipped except Allah and Allah is greater than can be described.” If you say this, for each time you will have ten trees in paradise of different kinds of fruits. They are (the reward) from perpetually charitable trusts.’ 

The Imam said that the man then said, ‘I take Allah as a witness that my yard is a charitable trust and the needy Muslims are its beneficiaries.’ Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, then revealed the verses of the Holy Qur'an: ‘For those who spend for the cause of Allah, observe piety, (92:5) and believe in receiving rewards from Allah, (92:6) We shall facilitate the path to bliss’” (92:7)

METHOD

 Recite Qur'an Juz with the niyyah of Sawab to Ayatallah Asif Muhsini.

After completion of recitation it is recommended to recite 3 x salawat, Surah fatiha x1, surah Ikhals x 3, salwat x 3 and request Allah to offer the Sawab to the deceased.
