salam alykum wrwb,

what are your views in regards to beauty especially in a spousal selection. Other than the guidelines in the Qur'an do we have a standard perception of beauty? In a lecture, one of the the disturbing things mentioned was that light complexion signifies health & fertility. Dark complexion societies thrive still. It would have been beautiful had he said something in the line of light on light, black on light, black on black. So do you share the same views, that white is beautiful or clean or healthy or fertile()? I can't upload the lecture, it is beautiful there & there.

I don't know about skin tone affecting fertility and to be honest I don't know if they'll even be able to to scientific studies on this.

But what I do know is that (in the west especially) people are getting brainwashed on what physical beauty should be...

In movies, TV shows, magazines, YouTube and social media young people are flooded by high profile celebrities and they subconsciously submit to the idea that those "celebrities" are the true definition of beautiful and you have to be like them to be beautiful. It's happening all around us. It's happening both ways.

Boys see Men which they deem to be "attractive" and girls see them too this puts pressure on boys the be like the "attractive" men so that girls like them.

AND

Girls see Women which they deem to be "attractive" and boys see them too this puts pressure on girls the be like the "attractive" women so that boys like them.

So there's no real hope for anyone because from here on children will just get exposed more and more to technology and the false idea of physical beauty. Some kids these days have phones and tablets at the young age of like 3 or something so they get brainwashed from a young age... And to be honest because it's such a powerful thing once you get that false perception of beauty there's little to no hope of going back...

A few years ago my teacher said something along the lines of: That porn is one of the biggest problems in this day and age it brings society so many problems, it causes addiction, wasting money, problems in relationships, erectile dysfunction, can encourage promiscuity and the most important of all it gives a false sense of beauty and can put sexual pressure on partners. You'd be surprised at how many people around you actually watch it, porn sites have some of the biggest internet traffic in the world.

That teacher was great, she spoke the truth.

As a white man myself my personal preference isn't a white woman, and I find pale white skin especially unattractive. I much prefer the 'olive to black' skin tones. I don't know if it's a subconscious thing to do with health, fertility, stronger genes etc.

Skin health (for example, smoothness, moisture) is an indicator of fertility and health for males and females. Skin color is not.

The biological standards of beauty are indicators of health. All else is cultural, subject to change, and a matter of personal preference.

Actually they did do a scientific study:

Roberts et al. (2004) showed that perceived facial attractiveness of women is higher in the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle than in the luteal phase, suggesting the existence of visible cues of ovulation. However, the nature of such cues remains speculative. Here, in an initial pilot study, we test the hypothesis that changes in female facial skin coloration across the menstrual cycle could be one of the signals that men have adapted to in order to assess female fertility. Spectrophotometric measurements of the facial skin color of normally ovulating Caucasian women (aged 24–29 years) were collected in the late follicular and midluteal phase of their menstrual cycle. Facial images were also taken in both sessions and judged for attractiveness and health by a panel of German men (aged 16–37 years). In line with Roberts et al. (2004), our results show that men perceive women in the late follicular phase to be significantly more attractive and healthier than those in the midluteal phase. However, we did not detect any significant differences in objective measurements of skin color between the two phases. We conclude that the increase in male perception of female facial attractiveness and health in the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle is not caused by a change in overall skin color and/or lightness. So do we take care of how we look or perceived. Let's  be looked @. thus developing a false sense of self. Fake hair/nails/body appearance & etc just to be beautiful. Is it a beauty that needs to be magnified or is beauty natural? a wheelchaired lady is not concerned about her 'looks' even though she's beautiful.

:salam:

Beauty of character like it inspires you goodness and leads you to be better, and a spouse who will cope with your defects. And vice versa.

As for color, I am more about sticking to your ethnical background for identity matters, but that is just my opinion.

I saw it in a documentary series in the 90s. I think it was narrated by Anthony Hopkins. It might have been called "The Human Animal". Don't watch it, not halal.

I know those guys are haram, meaning their agenda is haram. They are working for the dark side, they should be avoided where possible.

wa alaykum salaam wrwb,

Color, ethnicity, identity are not necessary for beauty

Beauty of character

what determines that certain characteristics are beautiful? Is there a bar for all to conclude as such so as to alter our ways?

Probably familiarity.  People always have some level of uncertainty of the unknown.  Uncertainty gives a less feeling of security.

More of birds of the same feather, in terms of way of life perhaps. That animal just made a ball out of poo of another & rolled it to dig & hide it not knowing that it carries a seed of some sort thus planting. Look again at creation & ponder...

I know. I think color, ethnicity etc just make things easier, and that is how I understand best the 'so that you may know each other' verse.

It depends on who's looking I guess.

That is good, very good. Only when you're talking about The Overseer of all.

The brother talks about the flower being beautiful for the bee, something like a preparation of some sort. Just that the Creator of both the butterfly and the flower is beautiful.

That notion is wholly untrue (assuming that that was the intent of that speaker - which if it was is a v irresponsible thing to say). Please don’t buy into it. Common sense and intellect is your 1st hujjah. There is beauty in every shade and color. There is no place for such ridiculous notions in our faith.

his name is Rupert Sheldrake and the title of his topic is " So, why there's so much beauty in the world". I believe his intentions are well intended. I don't know why he'd limit his views to such assumptions.
