There is a Indian restaurant here which serves halal food.

Most of the workers are Hindu but we aren't sure if the wear gloves or not.

Are we allowed to eat there?

The basic fiqh rule is this:

Everything in a non-Muslim market (substitute with restaurant, food-stand, chain, joint etc.) is haram until it’s is “proven” halal.

Everything in a Muslim market (substitute with restaurant, food-stand, chain, joint etc.) is halal until it’s is “proven” haram.

How far would you go to prove wether it’s halal or haram? For me the testimony of a non-Muslim waiter or the restaurant manager is never enough of a “proof”.

There is also the case of hybrid restaurants, where they say “chicken is halal but lamb is not”, I don’t eat there either, because I consider everything Najis there. What if they are sharing the same oils, spatulas, utensils etc. with a non-Zabiha meat which is Haram and Najis both?

From Sistani:

Question: Can we eat the food that has been cooked by a Hindu?

Answer: If it is not known that the food is Najis and if the food does not contain meat, there would be no problem in eating it. However, if the food has been touched with a wet hand or in the state of wetness, it is not permissible to eat it (obligatory precaution).

From Khamenei:

Q. Are Hindus and Buddhists kāfir in your opinion?

A. Yes, they are kāfir and ruled as najis.

We once had this issue, my wife and I, she ordered something halal from an Indian wrap chain. As she was on the phone it occurred to her that the woman sounded Hindu (they sound different apparently, I sort of see what she means but I don't know if it's in my head). I went to collect it and it was very much a Hindu-hotspot despite having a halal sign on the window. My wife didn't eat it in the end.

I think in multicultural cities, having a halal sticker on your window or buying your halal meat from a shop is just a way to add more customers. You, as a proprietor or chef may know nothing about halal food, but you know there will be enough people who won't think to question it. Questions like, do you have certification, how is the animal slaughtered, are they stunned or not, what conditions did they live in, who slaughtered them?

I always stick to unambiguous options when getting food.

(Muslim) Indian cuisine is the best, especially Mughlai. Hindu Indian food doesn't compare IMO.

Most "Indian" restaurants in United Kingdom are actually Bengali or Pakistani owned anyway.

For those curious:

Mughlai (moog-lie) is a type of cuisine that came about as a result of the Mughal rule in India from 1426 to 1857. During that time in India's history, the food was rich and cooked with aromatic spices, nuts, and dried fruits.

Aaaaaand now I'm hungry.

What if it’s a fast food chain like kfc & you don’t know the cooker’s religion & they have bacon on the menu? Can you eat it according to Ayatullah Sistani?
