I would just like to know people's opinions on these verses:

Verse 1

"Men are the maintainers of women, because Allah has made some of them to excel others...” (4:34).

الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ

Verse 2

"... And women have rights similar to the rights of men in a just manner, and the men have a degree (of advantage) over them..." (2:228).

وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ۚ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ ۗ

Verse 1

الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ

For the first verse, you have to ask what is meant by "Excel others" as your translation states. Many translations say "provisioned over women," meaning men are tasked with financially taking care of their women.

Aga Mahdi Puya in his tafsir says:

"In verse 228 of al-Baqarah Allah says that women also have rights as men have but men are a degree above women. In this verse it is again stated that men are the guardians of women as He has made the male sex excel over the female sex. This is the will of an all-wise and almighty Lord.

The equality before law should not be confused with the equality of the complex of subjective and original qualities. Even the messengers and Prophets of Allah are not equal in status due to their innate and endowed essence. "We have made some of these messengers to excel others", says the almighty , Allah in verse 253 of al-Baqarah."

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazis writes in his tafsir:

"The next part of the verse implies that this authority and leadership given to man is due to his obligations and economical responsibilities, that, he has to maintain the wife in a suitable condition."

As for the second, you have to ask what degree it's referring to. What kind of advantage? For example, men are advantaged in strength.

Aga Mahdi Puya, in his tafsir, says:

""But the men are a degree above women" refers to the natural differences which separate men from women. Allah is all-wise, therefore, particularly in the case of divorce, man can initiate the course of divorce, but a woman cannot. She, no doubt, can go to a qadi to obtain separation on the ground of unbearable maltreatment and demand dissolution of marriage by surrendering her right to mahar (dowry). This provision is reasonable because it prevents women from obtaining separation on flimsy grounds."

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazis writes in his tafsir:

"Then the verse applies to a fourth commandment saying: ``Women have rights similar to the rights that are against them with justice, but men have a grade above them.''

Due to some physical and spiritual differences that exists between man and woman, the management of the house is given to man and the assistance is given to his wife.

Here it is definitely declared that man and woman shall have similar rights against each other. But the difference in economic position between the sexes, makes the man's rights and liabilities a grade higher than the woman's. Elsewhere in the HOLY QURÄN (S 4: 34) man is declared responsible to provide for his wife and maintain her. Subject to this both sexes are on terms of equality in law, but in certain matters the weaker sex is entitled to special protection."
