How good/bad is Islamic Education in Iran?

This is a question that has always been in the back of my head. My parents (Iranian) know barely anything about Islam, despite being Shia Muslims, and I notice this about most Iranians I have met. Does Iran not teach Islam as part of it's school curriculum? I would assume it is mandatory.

Any explanation as to why the Islamic education is so poor? What is your experience if any? Am I right/wrong about this? Is the education good?

Around what age are your parents? What time did they go to school?

Born 1965

Edit: but I think I have noticed this in the younger generations too.

before revolution Islamic teaching was very poor in school curriculum & mostly was teachings in Mosques not schools & universities atmospheres were completely un Islamic even anti Islamic that people like as Martyr Motharry (رضي الله عنه) & Dr. Ali Shariati bring it to universities but after revolution despite caring more about Islamic teachings , it educated with low quality & with weak ways to new generations that we don't have people like as Martyr Motharry (رضي الله عنه) & Dr. Ali Shariati to revive Islamic teachings
