Hi everyone, I saw an ad for this movie and was wondering if you’d heard about it? It’s supposed to be about a Shia Iraqi family living in Australia.

W/salam. I watched it on a DVD in 2017 so my memory of it is a bit sketchy. But, if memory serves me correctly, it is a lighthearted movie that is both poignant and meaningful. I do recall recommending this movie to some of my friends so IMHO it's definitely worth a watch. Do let us know what you think of it if you decide to watch it. 

Edit - I just watched the ad and I don't believe that it is a fair reflection of the movie. I am sure that there will be some ShiaChatters who will find the stereotypes etc. depicted in this movie as being in poor taste. If you think that you would find this offensive in any way, then I strongly suggest that you give this movie a miss. But, it is a movie within the comedy genre so I suppose this is to be somewhat expected. I do believe that it is based on a true story and it was approved by the person who is 'Ali' in real life.

Like any movie about any culture, this one has lots of false biases but it’s a very interesting movie to watch. Some of the topics in there are what many of the ShiaChat marriage threads complain about (you be the judge). I loved one of the last scenes where his dad was reappointed back to his post, it was really comical. Overall the movie depicts a lot of false truths that are so prevalent in our Islamic Asian cultures. 

The main cast Ali (who also authored a book with the same theme) apparently did marry the real life female character some time later. After this one, he made some oddball movies too, but generally remained sane and didn’t let the media world take away his common sense. I didn’t watch any of his other movies.

I didn’t get anywhere close to finishing the movie but I wasn’t feeling that great about it, felt as if a mockery was being made of us.

They showed  that movie In Homebush holiday movie nights. But I never watched it only my siblings did.

It's a good movie, never seen anything like it, in terms of characters and diversity etc. I think it leans more towards comedy than being a more meaningful story. It did have an important message, but I think they shyed away from exploring it better. I feel like it was more satirical and I just prefer something deeper. Its still a good movie, I'd recommend it.

Was going to start a thread on this too.

It had it's funny moments and was clearly well researched in terms of the culture and religious nuances (like where someone who was hanafi asked him about the thrice talaq thing.)

Though I found it incredible where the old man with many wives (best character by far!) Suggested the main character to temporarily marry the girl. Yet the son of a Shia cleric had no idea, heck a quick google on Shia Islam will eventually lead you to the concept of mutah from all the anti sites out there

Exactly my opinion on the movie, I wanted to mention the three talaq... and the old man with many wives 

Scenes in the mosques are quite realistic and in line with the absurdity we face on a daily basis, likeI the competition amongst attendants, the cultural stuff (the Saddam musical lol!). 

I enjoyed the movie except for I think the kiss scene which was not necessary at all.

I saw this movie. I liked it. It was an enjoyable experience. It tackled a little bit of how living as a Muslim is in Australia but mostly it was just a romantic-comedy

I was very surprised to learnt he father character was not Arab or Muslim, he acted the part really well.

I saw the first 10 minutes on Netflix. Saw a scene of them escaping Iraq to Iran and getting abused and discriminated. Then they’re on a plane to Australia, with the announcer saying they’ve left Iranian airspace and can now serve alcohol. A woman takes off hijab and the young boy is all wide eyed and enticed by slow motion hair moving.

Off.
