If you look at the US, there is freedom of expression in many areas, but not when it comes to Israel. Whoever criticizes Israel is seen in the US as an enemy of the State. The reason why is because almost all politicians of both parties receive big $$$ from AIPAC and other Israeli affiliated groups. So when they get a chance to show how pro Israel they are, they take the chance.

In this case, they are 'proving it' by imprisoning a women who very little resources to fight back. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) help her. If anyone here knows about her case personally, try to contact CAIR www.cair.org, they help sometimes in situations like this. At least they will force the 'so called' Justice Department to tell them what crimes they are charging her with and what evidence they have for those crimes.

Being a journalist working for PressTV is not a crime in the US, at least not yet, so they will have to think up something else to charge her with.

Also many European countries have outright laws against those who condemn Israel or even question the holocaust. People go to jail for their opinions. America is going down that route.

Press TV issues statement on anchor’s detention in US

Press TV issues statement on anchor’s detention in US

Iranian English-language television news network Press TV has released a statement with regard to the detention and imprisonment of its anchorwoman Marzieh Hashemi in the United States. The statement is as follows:

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA): Iranian English-language television news network Press TV has released a statement with regard to the detention and imprisonment of its anchorwoman Marzieh Hashemi in the United States. The statement is as follows:

PressTV would like to hereby express its strong protest at the recent apprehension and violent treatment of Ms. Marzieh Hashemi, born Melanie Franklin in the United States, who is currently serving as an anchor for the English-language television news network.

A female African-American international journalist, a mother and a grandmother, Ms. Hashemi has traveled to the United States to visit her family members, including her brother, who is suffering from cancer. She was, however, arrested at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in St. Louise, Missouri on January 13, 2019 by US police, and transferred by FBI agents to a detention center in Washington, DC.

Ms. Hashemi has told her family in a phone conversation last night that she has been subjected to violent and abusive treatment from the very onset as described below:

- Ms. Hashemi is yet to be arraigned or given a reason for her detention and imprisonment. She, herself, is at a loss to know why she should ever face apprehension

- Her family members were kept completely in the dark about her situation for two straight days following the arrest.

. ..........

- Her current feeble health condition necessitates urgent medical attention.

- The United States government is accountable for any potential harm or hazard that would affect Ms. Hashemi’s mental or physical condition.

Accordingly, as part of the media community, we expect that all international media outlets set about relaying this affair without delay.

We, further, call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ms. Hashemi, and for the US government to apologize to both the journalist and the international media community for her treatment.

Iran newspapers, minister criticize US arrest of newscaster

Associated Press
DUBAI: Iran kept up its criticism Thursday of the FBI's apparent arrest of an American anchorwoman from Iran's state-run English-language TV channel, with its foreign minister saying "she's done nothing but journalism."

The hard-line Vatan-e Emrooz paper criticized the detention of Press TV's Marzieh Hashemi as "Saudi-style behavior with a critical journalist." That's a reference to the Oct. 2 assassination of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif told Press TV that "we have a right to continue to look after her interests" as Hashemi, born Melanie Franklin in New Orleans, also hold Iranian citizenship.

Iranian law, however, does not recognize dual nationalities, an issue that comes up in its arrest of those with Western ties.

"She is a famous journalist, she's done nothing but journalism," Zarif told the broadcaster from Baghdad. "The arrest of Ms. Hashemi is a very clear affront to freedom of expression, a political abuse of an innocent individual and I believe the United States should release her immediately without further delay."

Hashemi was detained Sunday in St. Louis, where she had filmed a Black Lives Matter documentary after visiting relatives in the New Orleans area. She was then taken to Washington by the FBI on a material witness warrant, according to her elder son, Hossein Hashemi.

The FBI said in an email that it had no comment.

"We still have no idea what's going on," said Hashemi, a research fellow at the University of Colorado who was interviewed by phone from Washington. He also said he and his siblings had been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury.

The incident comes as Iran faces increasing criticism of its own arrests of dual citizens and other people with Western ties. Those cases have previously been used as bargaining chips in negotiations with world powers.

you.S. federal law allows judges to order witnesses to be arrested and detained if the government can prove their testimony has extraordinary value for a criminal case and that they would be a flight risk and unlikely to respond to a subpoena. The statute generally requires those witnesses to be promptly released once they are deposed.

This is a very important video !! Sheik Abdul Ghani analyzes this issue in detail and tells why it is important for Muslims to care about it. Please share on twitter, Facebook, etc.

Also please share the link to the gofundme page for Sister Marzieh, given above at. The thing she needs most at this point is the help of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) and good lawyers. This money is going toward her legal defense fund. How it is being spent precisely is talked about by Sheik Usama Abdul Ghani in the above video. This is an urgent situation due to the tactics the US Government is using to do this trial quickly, and in secret so that (they think) she has no chance of defending herself.

I agree with him that this is an attack on Islam and specifically on Reverts to Islam in the US. It is also an attack on Journalists and the First Amendment to the Constitution. They want to intimidate and bully the community so that they are afraid to express themselves. If we let this injustice stand, the injustice will only increase and become more severe. This current administration has already made it very clear their feelings toward Islam and Muslims.

Iranian official warns US against continued arrest of Press TV anchor

Senior adviser to the Iranian parliament speaker for international affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian told the US to immediately release Marzieh Hashemi, an anchorwoman working for Iranian English-language Press TV, or face repercussions.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Iranian Judiciary's Human Rights Council said the way Hashemi has been arrested in the US and the “violent and humiliating treatment” of her is a brazen example of arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and flagrant violation of freedom of speech.

Pointing to the US government’s dark record of grave crimes against humanity and the blood of thousands of innocent people, particularly children, on Washington’s hands, the Iranian body said such American violation of human rights norms and international humanitarian standards is not surprising.

The statement also called on the self-proclaimed advocates of human rights in Europe, on the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to condemn the inhuman arrest of Ms. Hashemi immediately and unequivocally and to make serious efforts to secure her release.

“The US government is undoubtedly held accountable for all of these illegal, unjustifiable and anti-human rights measures,” the statement concluded.

In the long run, this is what we Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Latin Americans and other minority groups in the United States ought to strive for.

*** From Sarah Hashemi, Marzia Hashemi’s daughter ... on her GoFundMe page ***

سم الله الرحمن الرحيم

May peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his pure progeny, and his loyal companions.

We wanted to thank everyone again for the outreach and support for our mother, Marzieh Hashemi. It has been overwhelming, and is, in fact, making all the difference.

We have also seen significant media exposure for Marzieh Hashemi, although we have ourselves held back from speaking to the media over the past few days due to legal concerns. We will be happy to be more candid once these concerns subside.

The media exposure has been extremely helpful, in a very real way. The prison where she is being held is now making special arrangements for her food to be halal. They have also finally facilitated her requests regarding hijab. We do not think this would have been possible without media exposure and community pressure.

We have multiple lawyers and legal experts now involved in her case at the same time. These are seasoned individuals with high security clearance that allows them the necessary access they need to try and resolve this case on the legal front.

Alhamdulillah our mother has access and exposure, but there are unfortunately many Muslims in American prisons who need similar accommodations that are never arranged for them. Many Muslims in American prisons who do not, and cannot afford the most qualified legal teams. Our main worry should be with them.

They are invisible, and may go years without their religious requests taken seriously by anyone. Perhaps our mother’s imprisonment will bring exposure to these less known members of our community, and encourage on the ground activism to ensure the rights of these brothers and sisters.

We are all responsible for their wellbeing. These are the people that our mother speaks to us about most often, and tells us not to forget them, not to ignore them.

For us; Hossein, Sarah, and Reza Hashemi, this is not just about our mother. Her case highlights a larger constitutionally legitimized process by way of which people who have not committed a crime can be put in prison through legal means. They can be kept in prison for an indefinite period of time, and all of this is deemed legal and legitimate under you.S. law. This is highly problematic and can effect any one of us at any time.

We believe that it is imperative, especially for marginalized people in the United States of America to understand these controversial laws pertaining to being a “material witness” and other laws that can lead to our detention even if we have done nothing wrong.

We echo the voice of many legal and rights advocacy groups in the United States that find the constitutionality of these laws highly problematic, and, moving forward, we intend to assist organizations that are challenging this legal loophole.

At the moment, we are led to believe that Marzieh Hashemi’s release this coming week is a possibility, although nothing is for certain. We also believe that we are in a strong position on the legal front in general. This is certainly a result of community support.

Again, we don’t know anything for certain about her release. We were able to speak to her on the phone a second time on Friday 18 January. Her overall condition seems to be okay at the moment, but she did seem quite tired.

What is most difficult for us to grapple with is the fact that our mother will remain in prison for the duration of the legal proceedings, however long it may be, despite the fact that she has not been charged with any crime.

We will go forward by placing all this in Allah’s hands, for we plan and they plan, but He is the best of planners.

في أمان الله الكريم

Family of Press TV anchor worried as US refuses to release

http://en.abna24.com/news//family-of-press-tv-anchor-worried-as-us-refuses-to-release_925447.html

Press TV anchor held as material witness: US court

At the request of the US Justice Department, Judge Beryl Alaine Howell, the chief district judge for the District of Columbia, issued a federal court order, approving the partial unsealing of the Press TV journalist’s case, Reuters reported.

According to the document, since her arrest, the journalist has appeared twice before a US district judge in Washington and has been appointed a lawyer.

The Associated Press said US government officials expected her to be released immediately after her testimony before a grand jury, but Ms. Hashemi's elder son, Hossein, was pessimistic about prospects for her immediate release, saying it was not clear yet how long his mother’s testimony would last.

Hashemi’s daughter, Sarah, told Press TV in a statement Saturday that they were “very concerned” for their mother.

“We are hoping she will be free soon, but we have no concrete information and don’t know when that will be. We still do not know what this is about, which concerns us greatly. This is a very difficult time for the whole family,” Sarah said.

“My mother is a well-known journalist and has not committed any crime but this whole process has felt as if she is being treated like a criminal," she added.

Her elder son Hossein, however, said she was unlikely to be freed soon. So far, the Press TV news presenter has appeared twice before a US district judge in Washington.
“We’re hoping that it would be complete and she would be out this week. It doesn't look like that's going to happen,” Sarah said. “So we're just waiting to hear more.”

A court in the United States has confirmed the arrest of US-born Iranian Press TV news presenter Marzieh Hashemi as a material witness in an unspecified investigation.

The order said that Ms. Hashemi “has not been accused of any crime,” but she has said she was handcuffed and shackled and was treated like a criminal. The journalist has also said she had her hijab forcibly removed, and was photographed without her headscarf upon arrival at the prison.

Suzanne Nossel, CEO of the PEN America group promoting literature and free expression, says she is concerned Ms. Hashemi might have been targeted for her documentary for political reasons. “If there are other grounds for Hashemi's detention they must be made clear, otherwise she should be released immediately,” Nossel added.

Hashemi’s attorney, Preston Burton, said, “Marzieh Hashemi’s perseverance has been remarkable in the midst of difficult circumstances, and it is my privilege to represent her. She is heartened by the many expressions of concern about her well-being, and we expect that she will soon return to her family, her home, and her career.”

Since terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, material witness warrants have been used to detain possible witnesses or suspects.

The material witness warrants are rarely issued, and Ms. Hashemi’s case is the first such case filed in federal court in the US capital this year. Only two such warrants were issued last year and both are still under seal, The Washington Post said in a report on Friday.

The statute generally requires those witnesses to be immediately freed once they are deposed. However, the report further cited a 2005 joint analysis conducted by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union showing that the US government had held 70 men as potential material witnesses to that time and nearly half of whom were never called to testify.

The London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has projected a picture on the BBC building wall in a move to protest against detaining Iran's news anchorwoman in the US.

Masoud Shajara Head of IHRC told reporters he had written a letter to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to protest against the situation of Hashemi.

He noted the US President Donald Trump did not approve of anything which runs counter to his lies and tweets.

The US-born Press TV anchorwoman arrived in St. Louis Lambert International Airport last Sunday to visit her cancer-stricken brother and other family members, but wound up being arrested by the FBI agents to be transferred to a detention center in Washington, DC.

A group of protesters from the Islamic Movement in Nigeria held a rally on Friday to condemn the US’ illegal detention of Press TV journalist Marzieh Hashemi, calling for her unconditional release.

In a short address to the rally, senior cleric Shaikh Sunusi AbdulKadir Koki expressed the Movement’s concern over the “very illegal act of kidnapping by a country which claims to be a role model of justice, upholding human rights of citizens and freedom,” a statement by the Movement said.

He also criticized the silence of the international community and human rights groups towards this “great injustice”, despite all the evidence available.

Iran's FM criticizes US for violating civil rights

Iranian Foreign Minister in a message referred to detaining Iranian journalist Marzieh Hashemi and criticized the US administration for violating the civil rights.

'The US govt needs to explain how Marzieh Hashemi—a journalist and grandmother—is such a flight risk that she must be incarcerated until she finishes her testimony to a grand jury. 50 years after MLK assassination, US still violates the civil rights of black men and women,' Mohammed Javad Zarif tweeted on Monday.

In the meantime, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi condemned the US act and called for her immediate and unconditional release.

This is while, Pen American Center, a non-profit organization working to defend free expression in the US and the world, in a statement called for immediate release of Hashemi.

Meanwhile, the Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) has urged US to be accountable to the arrest of Marzieh Hashemi, saying there is no justification for denying her religious rights.

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum

Sister Marzieh has a court appearance tomorrow, January 23, along with her son.  What right do they have to put her in solitary confinement?

What crime is she guilty of to be treated this way?  What happened to the two congresswomen Omar and Talib?  Did they ever bring light to her case?

God give her patience for the oppression she is receiving by the US government LA.

Marzieh Hashemi to reappear before jury on Wednesday

"On Wednesday, a 23-member jury will be making a decision about my mother," Hussein told the Young Journalists' Club in remarks which the Iranian news agency published on Monday.

"The United States federal government has taken my mother to prison using a very controversial article, which is used very rarely," he added. "Whenever this article is applied, the person [in question] remains in detention for at most 16 days and then a decision is made about them."

He said the jury had failed to level any charges against his mother on the two previous occasions, and that she would be freed if the decision continues to evade the body for a third straight time.

Hussein said the 59-year-old had been transferred to solitary confinement, adding that he did not know either why this has happened or whether she continued to remain incarcerated in such a state.

Hashemi, an American-born Muslim convert who has been living in Iran for years, was detained at St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri last Sunday while she was in the US to visit her ill brother and other family members.

She was transferred to a detention facility in Washington DC, where she was forced to remove her hijab and only offered food not permissible under her Islamic values.

After days of silence, the US government confirmed on Friday that it was holding Hashemi in jail as a “material witness,” and that she would be released after she testified before a grand jury.

The son said Hashemi was known in the prison as a journalist, adding that prison guards had started to treat her better since her situation was widely reflected in the press.

Hussein said her mother's situation was giving rise to protests. "A very pure revolutionary and anti-arrogance wave is taking shape under the guidance of revolutionary scholars," he noted.

"If my mother remains in incarceration, the wave is sure to lead to a persistent movement and a freedom-seeking struggle," he added.

"Of course, we believe that God is on our side. We are going to emerge victorious from this oppressive drama" whether Hashemi is freed or her situation leads to creation of the movement, the son noted, thanking the Iranian nation for their prayers for her mother's release and their activities across the media aimed at making this happen.

He also said her mother's condition should draw attention to the situation of the large number of Muslim prisoners in the US, whose Islamic values might have been disregarded for long.

Marzieh Hashemi, the Press TV anchorwoman who has been detained by the FBI in the United States, is to appear before a grand jury on Wednesday.

"On Wednesday, a 23-member jury will be making a decision about my mother," Hashemi's son, Hussein, told the Young Journalists' Club in remarks which the Iranian news agency published on Monday.

"The United States federal government has taken my mother to prison using a very controversial article, which is used very rarely," he added. "Whenever this article is applied, the person [in question] remains in detention for at most 16 days and then a decision is made about them."

He said the court hearings had failed to level any charges against his mother on the two previous occasions, and that she was expected to be freed if the grand jury voted that there was not enough evidence to hold her.

Under US law, a grand jury, typically comprising 23 people, has the power to conduct legal proceedings and investigate potential criminal conduct, and determine whether criminal charges should be brought.

Hussein said his 59-year-old mother had been transferred to solitary confinement, adding that he did not know why this had happened or whether she continued to remain incarcerated in such a state.

The son said Hashemi was known in the prison as a journalist, adding that prison guards had started to treat her better since her situation was widely reflected in the press.
