We have a strong believe that Prophet pbuh selected imam ali as as his successor.. All the difficulties faced by bibi in the reign of Hazrat abu bakr where was imam was at that time and why he was not doing any compaign against the caliph? Why he remained silent and agreed with them even knowing about the murderers of bibi fatima as.

Dear Brother.

The fact that there are still shi'as out there that believe that Ameerul Mu'minin [as], The Commander of the Believers, the one who single handedly lifted the door of khaybar, the one who did not enter a battle unless he returned victorious, the one who the jinn feared out of his [as] strength, the father of Abul fadl Al-Abbas [as], Asadullah, The Lion of Allah, did not protect Fatima or oppose those 'caliphs'... the fact that they believe this is heartbreaking...

Imam Ali [as] DID protect Fatima [sa], and there are clear hadiths to this for example:

Bihar al-Anwar volume 28 page 268

(the hadith is long and i will only show the relevant point)

So when Omar and his group came to the door of the House of Ali and Fatima [as] he shouted: "Open the door, and if not, i shall burn the house upon you!", then Fatima said: "O Omar will you not fear Allah?" (in regards to him demanding the door to be opened, for him (omar) to enter it). So Omar insisted in his act and called on the group with him to burn the door, after this Omar kicked the door in while Fatima [sa] was behind the door. She shouted: "O my Father o Rasuul Allah!" So Omar hit her side with the handle of his sword, so she again screamed: "O my Father!" So he (Omar) grabbed his whip and hit her arms with it, so she again screamed: "O Messenger of Allah! wretched are the ones who stayed (after his [saaws] death) abu bakr and omar".

So Ali [as] jumped from the ground he was sitting on, like the lion he is he ran towards Omar, grabbing his shirt and throwing him to the ground, breaking Omar's nose and placing his [as] foot on Omar's neck wanting to kill him, until he [as] remembered the oath he made with the Prophet [saaws]. So Imam Ali [as] said: "By the one who blessed Mohammad [saaws] with Prophethood O Son of Suhaak (Omar), were it not for the oath (that Rasuul Allah [saaws] entrusted me with) you would've known not to enter my house!"

So Omar called upon qunfudh. He wanted to enter the house, but he saw Ali [as] reach for his sword, so he ran away to abu bakr. Abu bakr told him to go and enter the house with a group, and if Ali [as] opposed, they should burn the house down.

So Ali [as] after stating his words to Omar surrendered himself to the will of Allah and stayed patient. They grouped up against him and tied him with ropes. (and the rest of the incident is known).

Now as for the oath that was made between the Prophet [saaws] and Imam Ali [as]. It is narrated, that the Prophet explained everything that was to happen after his death [saaws] to Ali [as], and he made Imam Ali [as] promise him [saaws] not to wage war against them (abu bakr and omar) unless he is helped by 40 men.

After the incident of the burning of the house, and the false bay'a of abu bakr, Imam Ali [as] intented to return the truth where it were. He, Fatima, Hassan and Hussain peace be upon them went around all the houses of the muhajirin and ansaar, asking them to help Ali [as] remove abu bakr from the caliphate. He [as] was met with 40 men, so he asked them to come a certain place the following day with their heads shaved. Only a handful showed up (narrations state only 7), resulting in the fact that the condition of the war was not fulfilled. So Imam Ali [as] had to resolve to non-violent opposition.

Now as for the fact that Imam Ali [as] allegedly did not oppose them during their reign. That is simply not true.

There are many reports indicating Imam Ali [as] direct opposition to them for example:

Al-Mustadrakaat nahj al-balagha volume 1 page 284

In this hadith, Imam Ali [as] was face to face with abu bakr and omar and he delivered a wholesome speech in which he with the utmost eloquence and speech annihilated and humiliated humiliated them. In this speech he even insults their origin and calls them animals.

In addition to many other incidents in which the Imam's themselves spoke against abu bakr and omar. Imam Ali [as] himself during the reign always enjoined good and forbid evil as is the obligation of every muslim, even when the evil was done by the ruler of the time. For example when Omar changed the anniversary of the new Islamic year from Rajab to Muharram. Or when he forbid the two mut'as. Or when abu bakr or omar wanted to spread their rule (for the materialistic advantages) Imam Ali [as] opposed them directly.

And many other similar incidents.

I only advise you to read books like nahj al-balagha (it is in english) or search in the internet "did Imam Ali revolt against abu bakr" for example.

May Allah guide us all.

He remained silent for sake of Islam and the Ummah.

Islam had many enemies external AND internal. A civil war would have destroyed Islam so he chose to remain silent.

Clearest evidence is that when he did become caliph, all the enemies came out to fight him. His 4 year reign had 3 internal battles. Islam was much stronger by then so it survived but it would not have if Imam Ali (as) rose up after the demise of the Prophet (saw).
