The Virtues of Muawiyya Refuted.

A lot of our Sunni friends claim that Muawiyya is the uncle of the believers, he is a noble companion and that we should refrain from speaking on him. If anybody does say something about Muawiyya he is called a fasiq, Shiite and so on. Let us examine sunnis case for Muawiyya. I'm Gonna go through 6 ahadith our sunni friends use and show that they are either weak or not really virtues but in reality they expose Muawiyya for the man he really was.

Claim of virtues for Muawiyya

Hadith 1: Prophet Peace be upon him said " O Allah ! Teach Muawiyya The book, Math, and protect him from the Punishment " Musnad Shameen page 100

Here is the Arabic:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الدِّمَشْقِيَّانِ، قَالا: ثنا أَبُو مُسْهِرٍ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمِيرَةَ الْمُزَنِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ: " اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِسَابَ، وَقِهِ الْعَذَابَ

This hadith is weak however because of the narrator Ibn Abi Umayr who narrates directly from the Prophet(saw). Yet it is not established that he was a companion of the Prophet thus the hadith is Mursal. Ibn Abd al bar says the following about Ibn Abi Umayr.

Ibn Abd al bar: His companionship is not proven.

Hadith 2: Prophet peace be upon him said about: “O’ Allah, make him guided, a guider, and guide people through him. Sunan Tirmidhi #3842

Here is the Arabic with the dua marked in green:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْهِرٍ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرَةَ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ: " اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا وَاهْدِ بِهِ ". قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى: هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ

This hadith is weak for the same reason as the previous one. It contains Ibn Abi Umayr whose companionship is not established and he is again narrating directly from the prophet. Ibn abd al bar weakend this hadith specifically after he pointed out that Ibn Abi Umayr’s companionship is not established as reported by Ibn Hajar in Tahdib al Tahdib page 403-404, for scan check the previous hadith.

Hadith 3: Arbad bin Sariyah reported: "I heard the Messenger of Allah inviting people suhur saying 'come have a blessed breakfast” then the prophet said : " Teach Muawiyya The book, Math, and protect him from the Punishment " Ahmed Ibn Hanbal’s Fadail al sahaba hadith nr 1748

عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رُهْمٍ، عَنِ الْعِرْبَاضِ بْنِ سَارِيَةَ السُّلَمِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ يَدْعُونَا إِلَى السَّحُورِ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، قَالَ: " هَلُمُّوا إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ الْمُبَارَكِ " ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ، يَقُولُ: " اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِسَابَ، وَقِهِ الْعَذَابَ "

This hadith is weak because it contains Harith ibn Ziyad who is a weak narrator

Dhabi said he is Majhol (unknown).  Ibn abd al Bar said he is Majhol and his ahadith are rejected. Abu Hatim said he is Majhol.  Source: Sharh Sunnah al Nasai volume 22 page 368 by Muhammad ibn Ali al Ithubi.

Hadith 4: Somebody said to Ibn `Abbas, "Can you speak to the chief of the believers Mu`awiyah, as he does not pray except one rak`a as witr?" Ibn `Abbas replied, "He is a Faqih (i.e. a learned man who can give religious verdicts) Sahih al-Bukhari 3765

Here is the Arabic:

(3505)- [ 2 : 741 ] حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، قِيلَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: " هَلْ لَكَ فِي أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَإِنَّهُ مَا أَوْتَرَ إِلَّا بِوَاحِدَةٍ، قَالَ: إِنَّهُ فَقِيهٌ "

This is not a from the Prophet but I hear our sunni friends throw around this narration a lot. Being a faqih is not a virtue, for not every faqih is a virtuous person. One can be knowledgeable yet be a wicked person. In fact this hadith makes the matter worse, for if Muawiyya was knowledgeable in religion and yet it can be proven that he was a sinful and wicked person, then it shows that Muawiyya did not care for the religion at all, and thus he would be nothing more than a wicked scholar. The Prophet feared for the ummah from wicked scholars

Abu Dhar said, "I was with the Prophet (SAW) one day and I heard him saying: "There is something I fear for my Ummah than the Dajjal." It was then that I became afraid, so I said: "Oh Rasool Allah! Which thing is that?" He (SAW) said; "Misguided and astray scholars. Musnad Ahmed 21334

Here is the Arabic:

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هُبَيْرَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِيُّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو ذَرٍّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ: " لَغَيْرُ الدَّجَّالِ أَخْوَفُنِي عَلَى أُمَّتِي "، قَالَهَا: ثَلَاثًا، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَا هَذَا الَّذِي غَيْرُ الدَّجَّالِ أَخْوَفُكَ عَلَى أُمَّتِكَ؟ قَالَ: " أَئِمَّةً مُضِلِّينَ

This version is in Ahmed ibn Hanbal and has a weak Isnad but there is a sahih version of this Hadith in Sunan Al Tirmidhi 2229 that is authentic and was authenticated by Albani.

Hadith 5: The Prophet said to Ibn Abbas: Call upon Muawiyya for me, Muawiyya was his writer, I went to Muawiyya and said, answer the Prophet for he needs you. Musnad Ahmed 2651 

Here is the Arabic:

- حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو حَمْزَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، يَقُولُ: كُنْتُ غُلَامًا أَسْعَى مَعَ الصِّبْيَانِ، قَالَ: فَالْتَفَتُّ، فَإِذَا نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ خَلْفِي مُقْبِلًا، فَقُلْتُ: مَا جَاءَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ إِلَّا إِلَيَّ، قَالَ: فَسَعَيْتُ حَتَّى أَخْتَبِئَ وَرَاءَ بَابِ دَارٍ، قَالَ: فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ حَتَّى تَنَاوَلَنِي، قَالَ: فَأَخَذَ بِقَفَايَ، فَحَطَأَنِي حَطْأَةً، قَالَ: " اذْهَبْ فَادْعُ لِي مُعَاوِيَةَ "، وَكَانَ كَاتِبَهُ، قَالَ: فَسَعَيْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: أَجِبْ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ عَلَى حَاجَةٍ

This hadith only says Muawiyya was the writer for the prophet, it does not say he was a writer of the Quran. But let us assume he was a writer of the Quran, so what? Writing the Quran is not a virtue, for the Prophet had scribes who apostatized, like Abdullah Ibn Abi Sahr.

Abdullah ibn Abu Sarh used to write (the revelation) for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Satan made him slip, and he joined the infidels. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded to kill him on the day of Conquest (of Mecca). Uthman ibn Affan sought protection for him. The Messenger of Allah gave him protection. Sunan Abi Dawud 4358

Here is the Arabic:

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ النَّحْوِيِّ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: " كَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ يَكْتُبُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَأَزَلَّهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَلَحِقَ بِالْكُفَّارِ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَنْ يُقْتَلَ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ، فَاسْتَجَارَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَأَجَارَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ "

The hadith is Hasan according to Albani.

So, writing the Quran is no virtue at all, and if our sunni friends want to be insisting that it is a virtue, then we simply say it is a virtue Muawiyya shared with an apostate.

The fact that Muawiyya was a scribe however is problematic for the defenders of Muawiyya for he did not fulfill his duty as a scribe. The hadith in Musnad Ahmed does not tell the full story. When we read the same hadith in Sahih Muslim, we learn that Muawiyya told Ibn Abbas that he is busy eating. When Ibn Abbas told the Prophet, the prophet asked him to call Muawiyya for a second time, just to get the same answer. The Prophet then cursed Muawiyya by asking Allah to never fill his belly. Here is the hadith.

He (the Prophet) came and patted my shoulders and said: Go and call Mu'awiya. I returned and said: He is busy in taking food. He again asked me to go and call Mu'awiya to him. I went (and came back) and said that he was busy in taking food, whereupon he said: May Allah not fill his belly! Sahih Muslim 2604

Here is the Arabic:

- حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى الْعَنَزِيُّ. ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِابْنِ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ الْقَصَّابِ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: " كُنْتُ أَلْعَبُ مَعَ الصِّبْيَانِ، فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَتَوَارَيْتُ خَلْفَ بَابٍ، قَالَ: فَجَاءَ فَحَطَأَنِي حَطْأَةً، وَقَالَ: اذْهَبْ وَادْعُ لِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالَ: فَجِئْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: هُوَ يَأْكُلُ، قَالَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَ: اذْهَبْ فَادْعُ لِي مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالَ: فَجِئْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: هُوَ يَأْكُلُ، فَقَالَ: لَا أَشْبَعَ اللَّهُ بَطْنَه

 

 What kind of a man prefers to eat food instead of obeying the Prophet? Doesn’t the Quran say  O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you 4:59. Muawiyya didn’t only disobey the Prophet but he disobeyed Allah. One wonders why our sunni friends are so adamant about defending a man who prefers food over Prophet.

Hadith 6: Narrated Abu Idris Al-Khawlani: "When 'Umar bin Al-Khattab removed 'Umair bin Sa'd as governor of Hims, he appointed Mu'awiyah. The people said: 'He has removed 'Umair and appointed Mu'awiyah.' So 'Umair said: 'Do not mentioned Mu'awiyah except with good, for indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) saying: "O Allah guide (others) by him." Tirmidhi #3843

Here is the Arabic:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ وَاقِدٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ حَلْبَسٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا عَزَلَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عُمَيْرَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ حِمْصَ وَلَّى مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَقَالَ النَّاسُ: عَزَلَ عُمَيْرًا وَوَلَّى مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَقَالَ عُمَيْرٌ: لَا تَذْكُرُوا مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَّا بِخَيْرٍ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ: " اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ بِهِ

This hadith is weak however because of the narrator Amr ibn waqidi.

Abu Hatim al Razi said about him: He is weak in hadith. Tirmidhi said he is rejected in hadith. Imam Nasai said he is rejected in hadith. Ibn Hajar al Asqalani said he is weak in hadith. Bukhari said he is rejected in hadith. Daraqutni said he is rejected in hadith. Dhahabi said: reject him. Ibn Hibban said: He deserves to be reject. And he was weakened by many others. Conclusion: As we see all the virtues attributed to Muawiyya are weak and therefore Muawiyya was a man of no virtues whatsoever. The only thing we can conclude from these ahadith that our sunni friends tend to give us when they try to defend Muawiyya is that Muawiyya was a man who loved food more than obeying Allah and his messenger (saw).
