Losing your manliness

Recommended Posts

Asalamu Alaikum

We read in Treatise of Rights (Risalat al-Huqooq), the book by our 4th ma'soom (infallible) imam, Imam Sajjad Zainul Abideen ('a), about the right the stomach has against you:

The Right of Your Stomach

And the right of your stomach is that you make it not into a container for a little of that which is unlawful to you or a lot of it. You should be determined to eat what is lawful and not exceed the bounds of strengthening to the extent of belittling your stomach to the point that you lose your manliness. And you should restrain it whenever you are extremely hungry or thirsty, since getting really full will cause indigestion, sluggishness, indolence, and it will hinder you from nobility and any good deeds. And drinking too much will make you feel drunk, light-headed, ignorant, and take away your manliness.

However, I am confused as to what imam means by "losing your manliness". What does he mean by this? I am sure it relates to health.

JazakumAllah Khayr

W Salam

Apparently,  'manliness' is a [rather poor] translation of the Arabic word "muru'a"

To make it short, the Imam pbuh says you shouldn't let your greed and desire take over your dignity and force you to do things against your honor. You shouldn't do everything just for a more delicious meal.

If it is properly translated as manliness, then by "losing your manliness" means losing the possessing qualities of man like courage, fitness etc.

And if you want to listen its impacts on man's sexual sphere, then know that eating or drinking too much also effects male's sexual performance.

"Manly is usually a term of approval, suggesting traits admired by society, such as determination, decisiveness, and steadiness: a manly acceptance of the facts; manly firmness of character"

This sentence down below sounds logical and fair.

interesting. I wonder how this applies to our culture these days. There is always a push to SuperSize. That greed can definitely affect your behavior and outlook to society.

Wow, just got the notification to this reply right now, haha.

I remember a narration when Prophet (sawas) told Amir al Mu'minin : eat when you feel hungry, and stop eating when you feel hungry.

Quite a briliant enigma.

Alaykum el Selaam

Also Imam Ali (AS) said (almost?) the same. Then in the same hadith he spoke about the benefit(s). And the benefits are wonderful. If someone is struggling with overweight they should follow this advice and will see effects fast.  It takes some willpower ofcourse
I think one could find it when searching for the;  " golden rules of Imam Ali "
