German politician quits far-right AfD party role after converting to Islam

Party claims Islam is incompatible with the German constitution

A politician from the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, known for its anti-Muslim rhetoric, has quit his leadership role and converted to Islam.

Arthur Wagner stepped down from his post in the eastern Brandenburg state but remains a member of the party.

AfD claims Islam is incompatible with the German constitution and wants a ban on minarets and the face-covering burqa.

It became the third-largest party in the country’s parliament after the general election last September.

The party said it stood for the constitutional right of religious freedom, regardless of Mr Wagner’s conversion.

Let us hope he eventually finds the right form Islam, and he doesn't end up an anti-Shia extremist. Nevertheless, this is commendable.

True. I am not talking about his case specifically, but if someone is willing to be such an extremist in his thinking (as in being an Islamophobic white supremacist) then there is something fundamentally wrong in his thinking independently from his ideology.

As you said lets hope he finds the true path and doesn't end up becoming a wahabist or getting shot by his former cohorts.

Leading member of German far-right party resigns after converting to Islam

A German far-right politician, whose party claims "Islam does not belong to Germany," has converted to Islam and resigned his post.

Arthur Wagner, a leading member of Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the eastern state of Brandenburg, left his position on the party's state executive committee on January 11 citing "personal reasons," according to Andreas Kalbitz, AfD's chairman AfD in the state.

Kalbitz told CNN that he only learned about Wagner's conversion in a telephone conversation with him a few days later.

"I was very surprised," he said. "He has been very active in the Christian wing of the party."

Wagner was first elected as an AfD representative in 2015 and was a member of the state committee responsible for churches and religious communities.

Kalbitz said there was "no pressure from the party" for Wagner to resign. "The party supports freedom of religion," he said.

Salam their first encounter is with Sunni muslims so with high probablity he becomes sunni but now a days wahabism is affected higly &  preached by them based on his past extremist  he will be abosorbs by them unless some Shia muslims intervenes & show him true teaching of Shia Islam(true way).

The far-right are a people looking for a coherent ideology and one that establishes a clear hierarchy and sense of order.

They are a response to the sense of betrayal from their political leaders, which is understandable.

The key deviation from a religion of Islam is that their identity is based on race - which is antithetical to Islamic thought.
