Should I be a Shia or Sunni Muslim?

My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

I hope I'm not making a nuisance of myself on this Forum, but it does seem like a very friendly Forum.

I've been a Muslim for almost three and a half years, now, and I've had a lot of Muslims telling me that Sunni Islam is the only true Islam and that it's the only one to follow!

However: I've watched some Shia scholars speaking on YouTube and they seem to be very good to me!

So should I choose between Shia and Sunni, or should I just say that I'm a Muslim, and leave it at that?!

Please advise me, if you don't mind, because I do still feel a bit lost in Islam!

Mashallah keep researching and use your intellect to come to a conclusion, as in what sect is the truth.

When you research keep in mind these three aspects which will help you come to a conclusion (as in if a sect is missing any of these then it should not be followed)

(1) Rationality

(2) Justice

(3) Spirituality

Brother, I suggest you read this book here: https://www.al-islam.org/then-i-was-guided-muhammad-al-tijani-al-samawi

That book has converted thousands of Sunnis to Shi'as since it came out, I recommend you spend some of your time reading it.

I also recommend you watch this video here, the title is "The life of Imam Ali: Ghadir Khum", it will give you a whole new perspective of what happened during the life of the Prophet (s).

Salam aleykum.

I like this story because it shows how important it is to form no opinion but your own especially when you're converting. The brothers and sisters have all provided amazing resources so take it easy, don't be/feel compelled and discover what we (Shi'a) believe what is the true path.

The difference between Shiite and Sunnism goes back when our prophet passed away. Sunnism believes that our prophet didn't choose his successor, while Shiite believes that our prophet did choose his successor. Shiite says that at 10th Hejry year when prophet was going back from Mecca to Medina, he gave a speech about his successor. He raised hand of his cousin, علی ابن ابیطالب, and chose his cousin as his successor. The place that he gave speech is Ghadir Khom غدیر خم, so this even is called Ghadir Event. This speech, Ghadir Hadeeth, is documented in Shiite books frequently. Now, let's take a look at Sunni books and see if it is in their book or not.
I put 5 reference here, but it's more than that.

Sonan Tarmazy book: Rasoulullah said:" Whoever I am his/her follower, follow THIS Ali after me."

Masnaf Ibn Abi-Sheibah book: Rasoulullah raised hand of Ali and said:" Whoever I am his/her follower, follow Ali after me".

Ibn Kasir Tafseer book: Rasoulullah said at Ghadir Khom:"Whoever I am his/her follower, follow Ali after me".

Fath-al-Ghadir book: Rasoulullah said:"Whoever I am his/her follower, follow Ali after me".

Amali Almahamely book: Rasoulullah said:" Whoever I am his/her follower, follow Ali after me".

Brother these are only five examples. Surprisingly, 110 Sunni RELIGIOUS SCHOLARS narrated and documented Ghadir Event in their books. I honestly don't understand why they still say that Rasoulullah didn't choose his successor. To be honest with you, Shia Muslims do NOT need to use their books to prove Ghadir Event. There's enough evidence in Sunni books.

If you need to know about differences between Shiite and Sunnism, this book explains almost everything in detail:

Above book is a debate between one Shiite religious scholar and several Sunni religious scholars. Sunni religious scholars invited Shia scholar for debate in a city named Pishawar for ten nights in a mosque. At the end of debate, a lot of people became Shia. I heard from a person who visited Pishawar that most people who live in that area are still Shia.

Brother, I wish I could help you more, but I have to go to bed. If you have any further question, please message me. Allah keep you with Imam Hussain, حسین بن علی, both in this world and afterlife.

Funny how you ask this question on a predominantly Shia forum. The things you should ask yourself are:

  • Which choice seems more logical to you?
  • Are you asking questions to the right people?
  • Are you even asking the right questions?

At the end of the day, if you're searching for pure opinion rather than going out to do the research for your own, and having others provide it for you, I reckon that you won't get much of an answer to your questions.

We are giving brother @ManofIslam our resources and arguments about why we believe shi’a Islam is the path of righteousness, justice and truth. The brother can look at the resources we have provided and compare them with Sunni sources. Once he gains a reasonable knowledge of the history and theological differences of both Sunni and Shi’a (which I highly recommend the brother does) he then can ask himself these questions and decide for himself. We are not compelling him, he has come to shia chat asking why we believe what we believe and we have provided. I find the more you know the more you feel satisfied with your final decision. Masha’Allah.

Brother Wholehearted Shi'a: So very well said, bro, and thank you for this; Yes, I posted this question on this Forum mainly because so far, all of the Shia Muslims here have been very supportive and friendly towards me! So thank you, again, bro.

@ManofIslam Embrace the moment you start getting to know Ahlulbayt (as) and getting closer to them. Because the feelings that will overflow you are PRICELESS. It will be something out of this world, I've felt it because I was a christian aswell. You will only get this once in your lifetime, try holding on to it, nurture from it, and write your experience in details because you will want to read it again in few years from now.

:salam:

If you believe in Allah, angels, Quran, the messengers and the day of judgement, you perform your prayers, give zakat etc then you are a Muslim Sunni. Sunni belief is based on the following verses:

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination." (Surah Baqarah Verse 285).

O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray. (Surah Nisa Verse 136)

Notice in the verse above there is no mention of Imamah or Imams that our Shia brothers believe in and that is what differentiates the two sides. If Imamah was from the foundations of religion why didn't Allah mention it like he mentioned the other beliefs? He mentioned belief in him, angels, messengers, books, the last day but not Imams?
