I am a shia girl and I have been very close to a sunni man for about 4 years now. We share an amazing bond together. He’s everything I have ever wanted in a husband. But I’m an Indian and he’s a pakistani and also he’s sunni and I’m shia which is the biggest issue here when it comes to our marriage. His family has agreed for this proposal and in my family everybody agrees but we are too afraid to inform my father as he disaproves marriages of such kind. If anyone can please help me out to give me a dua that can melt My father’s heart for this proposal. I’ll be very thankful to you and will always remember you in prayers.

thank you

Who’s taqleed are you under? Marja’s range from not allowing it to highly discouraging it.

What would happen to your children? Will they follow Ali-Ibn-Abitaleb?

Your father has every right to do that. It is highly discouraged by most of the maraja and some even disallow it. Also father's permission is mandatory.

Before taking any decision understand that the love and affection now you share with that guy would not be the same few years after the marriage. So the differences in beliefs will hurt if any of you are slightly religious. He might not allow you to go for Azadari neither he will let your children accept Shia faith. Do you want to see your children singing praises of dushmane Ahlulbait (ams)?.

The decision affects your whole life. Do not make haste.

I would have do the same thing. Don't take a risk where you and your children's could be in future be influenced by Sunnism, it is very serious issue.

She will have to find out if he is okay with her going to azadari, which many Sunnis wouldn’t mind from what I know about them.

They definitely won't mind each other till their love life is at peak and don't care about religion. Couple of years later things become different. People generally turn more religious with age. Most probably, the guy won't like the star of his eyes, his dearest son doing a 'bidah'. Infact, lots of bidah. Same Stands for his wife.

Not really that people will become more religious with age. In fact, it’s the opposite for most people.

from a fiqh perspective, yes as long as there is no danger of you going astray.

From a practical perspective, I would advise against it.

I heard it directly from a marja, "How can any shia ever marry someone who carries love in their hearts for the killers of Sayeda and her family?"

You should ask yourself this question and then decide what to do:

What will you do if he forbids you from going to ziarah?

If your answer is you will leave him and go for ziarah, then you might as well leave him now.
If your answer is that you will not go to ziarah, then asking shias for advice on this issue is pointless anyway.

Edit: so people decide to thumb me down because I stated that marrying a Sunni, to most marjas, is not considered haram. Even if something is discouraged/disliked/makrooh, it doesn’t mean it’s haram.

To thumb me down, you also disagreeing with Sistanti says about this issue: which he allows. As do many other marjas.

Salaam sister

Bad idea. Have you discussed children? Their up bringing: Shia or Sunni.

Are you going to be allowed to go to Ashura, Arbaeen?

Will you be allowed to go for ziyarat?

Personally I cannot fathom life without  mourning  Imam Husayn as.  Karbala is in my heart and soul.

Yes, I have, and many Sunnis are Lineant on the issue. It’s mostly Shias who think Sunnis will oppose these issues, whereas most Sunnis just don’t care, and won’t impose their beliefs.

For example, my Sunni guy and I have agreed to raise our kids Shia, because he believes kids will follow their mothers, and he shows no objection to it. We are even planning to go to Karbala together next year inshallah.

He also wants to attend ashura majlises with me.

He shows no opposition to ziarat and doesn’t believe it’s shirk of any kind, although he doesn’t understand the concept of it fully.

Just to challenge all misconceptions about this kind of relationship.

It is permitted by many marjas but I think it can cause problems as it can be difficult to spend your life with a person from opposite sect. You can talk to him about all that stuff tho.I hope everything goes fine, take care sister.
