The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Saturday, March 1st, 2025, will be the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan, 1446 A.H. for the entire region of North America.

This determination is based on the fact that there were verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Friday, February 28th, 2025 in different regions of North America. 

Ramadan Mubarak! We ask God, the Most High, to accept your fasting, grant success in performing good deeds, and to hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

Ramadan 1 is the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak! May
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) grant success in performing good deeds and hasten the return of Imam
Mahdi AJ.

Ramadan 8 is the wafat  (passing away) of Abu Talib AS (although some say he passed away in other months).

Ramadan 10 is the wafat (passing away) of Lady Khadijah AS

Ramadan 14 is the martyrdom of Hadrat Hamza RA, uncle of Prophet SA. 

Ramadan 15 is the birth annniversary of Imam Hassan AS

Ramadan 17 is the Battle of Badr.

Ramadan 18 is the day before Imam Ali AS was struck down. At sundown the Ahya
program begins. Laylatul Qadr Amal is carried out in the masjid, Islamic
Center or at home. 

Ramadan 19 is the day that Imam Ali AS was critically injured in Fajr prayer.

Ramadan 20 is the day before Imam Ali AS was martyred. At sundown the Ahya
program begins. Laylatul Qadr Amal is carried out in the masjid, Islamic
Center or at home. 

Ramadan 21 is the martyrdom of Imam Ali AS.

Ramadan 22 At sundown the Ahya program begins. Laylatul Qadr Amal is carried
out in the masjid, Islamic Center or at home.

Ramadan 23 is possibly Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power.

Salam. Since I live in the US, the Holy Month of Ramadan started on March 1, so there is no confusion about how many days have been fasting. 

Ramadan 1 = March 1 = Beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan 2025

When should you look for the crescent moon? Ramadan 29 = March 29. If you don't see the moon that night, then fast Ramadan 30 = March 30.

Preliminary Statement Regarding the Expected Beginning of the month of Muharram 1447 A.H.

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America would like to inform you that the astronomical calculations regarding the crescent moon's position for the sacred month of Muharram indicate that the first day of the month of Muharram will fall on Friday, June 27, 2025, God willing.

However, there is a low possibility of the crescent being visible on the western coast of the United States on Wednesday, and if the sighting is confirmed, Thursday, June 26, 2025, would mark the first day of Muharram for the western coast and its neighboring regions only.

We kindly ask the believers to await the official statement from the Moon-Sighting Committee, which will be issued late on Wednesday evening. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter.

We ask God Almighty for success in commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (p) and hastening the return of our master, Imam Mahdi (p).

Muharram 1 is the beginning of the first 10 days of the Holy Month of Muharram.

Muharram 2 Imam Hussain AS arrived in Karbala.

Muharram 3 Hazrat Yusuf was released from prison.

Muharram 7 Water is cut off from Imam Hussain (p), his family, and his companions.

Muharram 9 is The Day known as Tasua, the day before Ashura. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) accept your amal (activities) in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.

Muharram 10 is The Day of Ashura, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein AS. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) accept all your amal (activities) in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.

The Quiet Dangers That Break the Soul

In every age, human beings have struggled with two deep desires: the need to talk about others and the thirst for recognition. At first, they seem small, almost harmless, a whispered word about someone’s mistake, a quiet craving for people to notice and admire us. But these subtle habits can carve cracks in the soul, cracks that widen until they lead us far from God.

Imam Hasan al-Askari (p) gave us a warning that pierces across time “Beware of spreading information about people and seeking leadership, for these two call you toward destruction” [Tuhaf al-‘Uqul, p. 487].

The Weight of Words

When we speak about others, whether their faults, their private lives, or their struggles, we may not realize how heavy those words become in the sight of God. What feels like casual conversation can ruin reputations, break trust, and plant seeds of bitterness that last for years. Worse still, every word leaves an imprint on our own hearts. With each careless tongue, our soul grows harder, less sensitive to mercy, and more distant from God.

The Subtle Trap of Recognition

The desire for leadership is not always about titles or power. Sometimes it shows up as the quiet need to be admired, followed, or obeyed. We want our voice louder, our opinion dominant, our presence recognized. But Imam al-Askari (p) reminds us that this thirst for attention does not uplift the spirit. It leads us to destruction. True honor lies in humility before God, not in chasing the fleeting approval of people.

A Mirror for Our Times

Today, in an age of social media, the Imam’s words ring even louder. We scroll through feeds filled with exposed flaws and curated self-images, where gossip spreads like fire and the chase for likes feels endless. How many times do we share something just to be seen? How often do we join in speaking about someone else when silence would have been closer to God?

The Path Back to God

The antidote lies in awareness and restraint. Before our words leave our lips, we must ask: Will this bring me closer to God, or will it break another’s dignity? Before seeking recognition, we must remember that God is the only One whose gaze matters. For in the end, the only recognition that saves is God’s, and the only words that endure are those that heal.

The Imam Whom Chains Could Not Break

Imam Musa al-Kadhim (p) endured years of imprisonment, chains, and torment under the oppressive Abbasid regime, yet his heart remained filled with faith and patience.

In the words of his visitation:
“O God, bless Musa ibn Jafar… the one tortured in the depths of prisons and the darkness of basements, with his leg beaten to the rings of chains and a body that was disrespected in his funeral procession.”
[Ibn Tawus, Misbah al-Zair, p. 382]

Behind the cold iron bars, Imam al-Kadhim (p) turned solitude into worship and captivity into communion with God. The cruelty of men could not imprison his spirit; it only revealed his unwavering trust in the Divine.

He was denied freedom, yet his supplications echo through generations, teaching us that no circumstance can silence the soul that relies upon God. His life is a testimony of endurance, humility, and surrender to the will of God even amidst the most unbearable trials.

As we remember his martyrdom, let us honor his legacy not with sorrow alone, but by striving for patience in hardship, steadfastness in faith, and purity in devotion.

May peace be upon Imam Musa ibn Jafar, the imprisoned Imam, the patient
worshiper, and the shining light that no prison could contain.

Salam. The month of Shaban started on different days in the US and Canada, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.

If you are in the region that Shaban 1 started on Tuesday, January 20, then it is safe to say that Tuesday, February 17 is Shaban 29. Look for the crescent moon that night. If the crescent moon is sighted in your area, then Wednesday, February 18 would be the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
