I am newly converted to shiaism, actually still in converting process. I want to ask what is the right islamic date to wear kalawa in muharram and when do we put them down? Also please tell me what to do with that kalawa or kara after putting them down? Also is it compulsory to wear kalawa or kara in muharram?

Welcome to Shia Islam. May Allah accept all your good deeds and forgive your bad deeds.

What is this Kalawa you are talking about ?

It is a silver bangle that Sikh's wear, but Shias man in the Indian Subcontinent also wear it, but they say it is to represent the chains worn by Imam Sajjad peace be upon him.

@op, salam brother, there are no rules to wearing it.

Asslam Alaikum,

Welcome Dear. May God further leads you.

As for you question its a voluntary act and has not much rules associated to it. Similar is the case of wearing black/red threads chains and black dress during Muharram. Its just a way of commemoration.

When you put them down i suggest put them in the same box that has torn paper of Quranic verses. Or dispose them in running water(river/stream). Disposing in water is a way of disposing of torn papers containing Quranic verses recommended in -Tohfaa Tul Awam-. I don't know if you have heard about this book or not, but it contains most of the rules and recommendations that a person can need in every day life. This book is pretty common among Shia Muslims.

I personally don't opt to wear these anymore, due to same reason. (Issue of disposal)
