More than a decade of U.S. intransigence left Iran considerably closer to a nuclear bomb than it would have been had Washington engaged in genuine diplomacy sooner.

Wallah.

And furthermore, even the supposed 'punishment' of the West was a blessing in disguise for Iran. The (illegal) sanctions placed on Iran have just forced them to become self-sufficient - something which the Great Satan despises in a country. But even worse (for the West), the sanctions have just forced Iran to look for other trade partners, namely Russia and China. I honestly do not understand how the West thinks that continuing with these sanctions is good for them and bad for Iran. Rather, Iran will come out of this stronger and more independent than ever, insha'allah.

In a crushing and revolutionary action in response to the resolution of the Atomic Terrorist Agency, Iran has finally started 60% enrichment at Fordow and will begin the process of replacing 1,000 first-generation IR-1 centrifuges with modern IR-6 centrifuges, which is the second step. It is more painful than the first one for Westerners. Rashto!

This is obviously coming up a lot - so here is one take on the context

This message on Twitter has what seems like a sound explanation. However, I asked ChatGPT to check it and it provided a rewrite that appears below the link

Prior to 2018, and in full compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran limited its uranium enrichment to 3.67%, as repeatedly verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The JCPOA’s central inducement for Iran was the removal of international sanctions. However, the U.S. withdrawal from the deal under President Trump, and the subsequent reimposition of unilateral sanctions, eroded these incentives and significantly damaged Iran’s economy.

In the absence of the JCPOA, only the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) remains as the governing framework. Importantly, the NPT does not prohibit the enrichment of uranium to 60% for peaceful purposes, provided activities remain under IAEA safeguards. While modern medical isotope production typically requires enrichment levels below 20% and can be achieved through alternative technologies like cyclotrons, these require access to advanced equipment. Iran, constrained by sanctions, relied on older centrifuge infrastructure, which may have necessitated higher enrichment levels for equivalent output—although the technical necessity of 60% enrichment for isotope production remains contested.

Despite its enrichment to 60%, there has been no verified evidence from the IAEA or U.S. intelligence agencies indicating that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program. The 2021 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate concluded that Iran was not engaged in key activities necessary for weaponization. Nevertheless, the Trump administration’s withdrawal was framed around security concerns, a narrative reinforced by longstanding opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose claims about Iran’s nuclear intentions date back to the 1990s.

The current U.S. administration is attempting to revive a nuclear agreement under similar terms. However, trust has significantly eroded. Iran’s leadership views the 2018 U.S. withdrawal and subsequent pressure campaign as a breach of good faith. Given recent covert operations targeting Iranian territory, Tehran remains wary of returning to negotiations without stronger guarantees.
