I think this is a Twelver thing. In other schools we put alayhem salam in members of the Ahl al Bayt a.s.

Allahumma sallay ala Muhammadin wa ala Aal-e-Muhammadin kama sallaita ala Ibrahima wa ala Aal-e-Ibrahima, Innaka Hameedum-Majeed.

Is this a shia thing? Durood-e-Ibrahimi is recited by the Sunni's as well.
What is meant by "Sallay Ala"? Whatever it means to you, note that it is for the Prophet & his Aal (Ahlul Bayt), peace & blessings of Allah be upon them.

So next time when you take the name of Imam Ali or Syeda Fatima, do say "Alayhes-salato was-salam" after their names.

Salam,

Why is p.b.u.h./s.a.w.s. affixed to the lmams names ?

l thought this was limited to Muhammed-s.a.w.s.,

I am twelver. And we also suffix alayhem salam i have'nt came across one brother/sister that uses S.A.W.S with Ahl e Bayat A.S. In my opinion there should be another suffix fro Ahl e bayat A.S. Thought arabic version of all is different but if translate to english then
Alayhem Salam = un par slamti ho = "peace be upon him"

صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم ‎‎= "blessings of God be upon him and his family and peace"

So its safe to say that in English translation as per wording PBUH(already english) S.A.W and A.S have somewhat same meaning. Though we have choice in arabic and S.A.W is used for Muhammad S.A.W only.

l do see the logic applied in this explanation: applying "Allahumma ... " to the lmams.

Do not know if  l agree.

Imam Ali (asws) or (as)
asws stands for "alaihes-salato was-salam"
as stands for "alaihes-salam"
