An immutable law of freedom is that when someone proclaims very loudly that they are offering it to you, there's something in it for them. And likely their gain may even be at your expense leaving you worse off than before.

Certainly, some women may have felt that he was 'liberating' them, but handily for him that liberation provided a greater supply of models to pose naked for his magazines, an endless supply of hopefuls willing to be bedded by him in exchange of fame and of course women who'd go on to make accusations of abuse e.g. one of the cases against Bill Cosby is alleged to have taken place on a Hefner property.

But having sought to modernise morality the problem he ultimately faced was that his version pretty quickly came to be seen as too tame, outdated, too conservative and indeed backward.

Subsequent generations of pornographers were willing to go further, be more explicit or to use his logic, to be more progressive than he was.

And that led to a slump in the sales of his magazine.

Quote

The magazine’s “progressive” approach to sexuality...The magazine and Hefner’s lifestyle often provoked criticism, from feminists and conservatives alike...I changed attitudes toward sex. That nice people can live together now. That I decontaminated the notion of premarital sex...He claimed to have had sex with 1,000 women. Many of the magazine’s centrefold models stayed at the mansion while they were working for the publication.

There are some famous people willing to be associated with him, I don't think history will judge him favourably and they'll regret having known him.

It reminds me of the British celebrity, Jimmy Savile, who achieved such fame in his lifetime that he was invited to address the Israeli Knesset but who was ultimately unmasked as one of the most prolific sex offenders that Britain has seen.

It should have been deleted being porn related material placed in the thread during the mourning days of Muharram for Imam  Husain AS and his companions.

The news preoccupation with Hefner is indicative of how American News values things.

At Noon today, three of the ten "In the News" items on Google are "Hugh Hefner", "Playboy Mansion" and "Playboy". The waste of time "Twitter" is also listed.

l disagree @David66, it is not the end of an era anymore than it was the start of an era. lf you remember, the original "Monroe shoot" was  a one-off . lt was only after another two or three months and enough interest had been expressed that the publishing took-off.

Out of respect for @skyweb1987 's views, l won't explain or review any more of the history.

Why did we need to know?

Because it is a current event and this is the current event section of Shia Chat.

For better or worse, Hugh Hefner was an iconic figure.  I tragic figure in my opinion.  Despite his wealth and fame and party lifestyle it seems he never found happiness.  A lesson for us all I think.

Also, if web site admin wants to delete the post then do so.  But, unilateral editing of my post smacks of third world level censorship.

All the Best,

David

I agree, it was only the start of an era, definitely and sadly not the end of it. I don't find him an interesting person at all, if any, what matters has probably been his magazine and what meant back in the day. Today is just a relic of the past.

You will always find people who believe that indiscriminate aggressive over-sexualized exposure is good and 'progressive' for society. Rushdie, for instance, argued that porn should be watched by kids.

In such cases is where the third world level censorship would be more than welcome.

No, its just common sense that your thread would be censored on a religious forum, regardless of how current the news is. Would it be an acceptable post  on a Christian or Jewish forum?

There's a time and place for everything, David. Not here, and not on Muharram.

Your post was not edited. A Moderator changed the title of your topic from 'Hugh Hefner has died' to 'Hugh Hefner (pornographer) has died' because many people never heard of him.

lol, that is the definition of edit.  When editing, it is common etiquette to note what is edited, who did the editing and why.

Oh?  While I am not comparing the two, we can have multiple mutah post each week but the mention of Hugh Hefner passing is too "adult" in nature?

Eh, I am not a big fan of the mutah posts on SC. However,it is apples and oranges to compare a mutah post of a lonely sixteen year old kid versus Hefner's "iconic" escapades. That being said, I am glad that he passed away. Guy was a creep in my opinion, good riddance.

not so well known for his infamy these days

^ Says this on the bottom of your post and edited by Hajj 2003. Hameedeh explained it pretty well to you, do I honestly need to spoonfeed this to you?
