Oh my goodness yes! "Sorry to disappoint, but I really don't have any wild past!"

For women there is also the persistent assumption that she must have converted for a man. Why is it so difficult to believe that Islam is much bigger than any person?

We can add to the big list above mention one more.

- Being tag and/or accused as a highly potential apostate. (basically for ask logic questions but considered tabu).

Just remember that although there are challenges alhamdullilah always be grateful that Allah swt saw you as someone worthy of this blessed guidance and put you on this blessed path and that He will always find you a way out of whatever revert problem you are facing. If we are thankful Allah swt will give us more and open new doors for us.

Thank you so much! I need to read this more often.

Has anyone had problems of having to decrease friends? Like after becoming Shi'a because the Sunnis that know you - its just not so good anymore?

That's pretty much universal.

Salām ‘Alaykum,

We have started a group on Telegram to discuss the problems and issues facing Muslims.
If you're a convert to Islam, please join our group: https://t.me/joinchat/AUnBFz_f9b_tw19FwRdfiA

You can download Telegram from: http://telegram.me

Telegram is a scam, it always tries to use data secretly. Whatsapp is much better for that purpose.

 1. Judgment from friends and family for converting.

2. Never quite fitting in a Muslim community.

3. Language and culture barriers.

4. Being assumed that I don't take my faith seriously, I was told on here that "One day, I will follow Islam, the next day I will follow Buddha."

5. Dealing with pork and alcohol at the dinner table. (Especially since I can't move away from it)

6. Missing salat.

7. Marriage, I haven't found the right one yet but you will be surprised at how some born Muslimas/Muslims love to waste your time.

8. Being misunderstood/judged/taken for granted.

9. I am nervous about going through number 8 because of my disability.

@Hameedeh Did I miss anything else?

Why the number 2?Aren't Muslims supposed to treat converts as any other Muslim?

^^^ I liked your post when you made it. I couldn't think of anything to add. You have a long list of problems. InShaAllah these obstacles will be solved one by one.

^^^ This is one that sisters always face. It makes me upset (angry or depressed) that people assume that because I am an American woman who converted to Islam that I had a sinful past.

^^^ Everyone is equal but some people look down on reverts because they think we were brought up under nonIslamic conditions, eating pork and drinking alcohol 24/7/365. From two years old I was in Sunday School and when I was five I started attending Church with my mother and sometimes my father would join us. My family didn't eat pork or drink alcohol. We ate chicken or beef once a week. Mostly we ate vegetarian food, boiled beans and fried potatoes.

Imam Musa Kadhim (as) spent approximately 16 years in prison, including a prison which was so small that he could neither stand nor sit, so was forced into a rukuh position. in the kadhamiyyah museum, you can see the actual weighted metal balls tied to his hands and feet to keep him in agony while imprisoned.

after he was martyred, his kaffan was left abandonned on a bridge and guards posted - anyone who was caught even crying was immediately arrested and killed.

if the criteria for OP to join a madhab is who was persecuted more, then Imam Musa Kadhim (as) is clearly the one who was persecuted the most. what persecution did hazrat Ismail face according to OP by the way?

For me biggest problem is not really having a community. Where I am all the Shia communities are very ethnic and I'm literally the only convert (as far as I know). This means any local Shia community comes with problems like cultural and linguistic barriers. Oftentimes those born into Muslim families are difficult to relate to as well since they don't always understand the struggles that we face.

Not to mention that in my specific case all the Shia communities are quite far. This is an issue for me as I don't drive due to personal reasons. I can't just ask my family to drive me to a masjid either as they don't even know I'm a Muslim. They can't know as they hate religion. Asking other sisters to pick me up is hardly an option either as I don't really have any connections with any of them (for the reasons mentioned above) and plus if random Muslims came to my house my family would begin asking questions (despite being an adult I live with family for the time being due to financial reasons).

I wish I had another convert, even just one, to connect with. I know some local ones, but they're all Sunnis. It's not the same when I cannot even be myself around them as I'm too afraid of them discovering that I'm a Shia. It's not like I can pray in their masjids anyway as I was told it's haram (information I got from the internet since, again, no community to confide in).

Anyway, I'm just tired and needed a place to vent. This is just all too much. I feel like I'm close to abandoning the faith again :(

I relate to your situation. I feel like I have read has much has I can and that I can't learn anything more that way. There is a tiny Shia community in my city and there is a language barrier.

What helps me is having religious conversations about Islam and shia with people that are willing to have them. It keeps me sharp if nothing else.  I think there are alot of people like us that are around us.

But I really relate to your experience of lack of community.  That is ablsutley true with my situation also. When I get depressed about it i think about how I got here in the first place and how empty all the alternatives were along the way. I really don't feel like I have much of a choice if I want to be someone who pursues what's true and right and that makes me feel better for a bit.

I hope your situation improves for you soon and know there are lots of people like you. Maybe we are just scattered.

Salam attending Sunni Masjid or community is not haram also attending between Sunnis & cooperation is highly recommended ; if it doesn't cause harming you which in case of emergency due to fear of harming you can practice Taqiyya among them .

It is highly recommended for every Shia Muslim to pray with Muslims from other sects in their congregational prayers, but we need to recite Sura Al-Hamd and other Sura for ourself. Such Salaah will be valid if it was performed inside the time not before it.
Jum'a prayers with non Shia Muslims is good but we need to recite Dhuhr Prayer as well.
Wassalam.

Participation in Muslim Worship Gatherings

The Shiite Imams always emphasized the participation of Shia in Muslim worship gatherings. In one narration, Imam Sadiq ((عليه السلام).) said: “The reward for praying with the Sunnis is equal to the reward of praying with the Messenger of God (s.a.) or striving in the way of God.[11]” Ishaq ibn Ammar narrates that Imam advised him to pray with non-Shia in the mosque, as the person praying in the first row is like one who has drawn his sword in the way of God.[12]

Significance of unity in Imam Sadeq’s view: praying behind Sunnis in Masjid Al-Haram is like praying behind Prophet

‘Alī bin Ibrāhīm from his father, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr from Ḥammād from al-Ḥalabī from Abī ‘Abdillah (a) who said: Whoever prays behind them in the first row, is like the one who prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (p).[3]

In one tradition [attributed to Imam Sadiq], participating in congregational prayers in Masjid al-Haram has been equated to saying one’s prayers led by the Holy Prophet ((صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).a.). What is the meaning of this tradition? Obviously, Imam Sadiq would not have compared the prayers led by an ordinary prayer leader with the prayers led by the Prophet (s.w.a.). What is the meaning of this tradition then? It highlights the importance of unity. You should show unity in practice.

Imām al-Ṣādiq (a) said: If you pray alongside them, an amount will be forgiven for you that equals the number of people who oppose you.[4]

Jābir al-Ju’fī said: I told him (al-Bāqir) that I have neighbours, some of whom know about this affair[1], while some of them don’t. They ask me to recite the call to prayers for them and expect me to pray with them, but I am afraid that it may not be feasible for me. So, he (a) responded: Recite the call to prayers for them, lead them in it, and find the times to do so.[2]

Yea, I go to the nearby Sunni masjid now occasionally. First time I went they fittingly had a khutbah about Muslim unity. That put me at ease a bit since I was so nervous going in. I kept thinking I was going to be attacked if people noticed me praying the Shia way.
