Quote

Jibrael-al-Ameen (Gabriel, the Trustworthy) called on Adam and said to him:

“Allah had commanded me that I leave it to your discretion to pick and choose one thing out of the three and leave the remaining two.”

Adam (A) asked: “O Jibrael ! What are those things?”

Jibrael said: “These are ‘aql (Reason), haya (Modesty) and deen(Faith).

Adam (A) expressed: “I pick and choose 'aql (Reason).” Jibrael said to the other two (haya and deen):

“Both of you go back.”

The two (haya and deen) replied: “Allah has ordained us to adhere to 'aql wherever it may be.”

Jibrael, saying: “Well you know your position best,” rose back to the firmament.

No point in quoting Hadith if you can't explain it.  AQL is a faculty of the heart.  "They have hearts but do not intellect (fahum la yaqilun) with them" says the Quran.

Aql is not something of the mind but is rather something of the heart.  This does not imply that the heart is anti-rational but rather this simply means that there is something (namely the heart) that is supra-rational or beyond reason.

Nice point. Probably with aql, you will eventually drive towards haya and deen.
I am also of this opinion it is mind which turn you towards true religion. Then it is heart which sticks you to beauty of religion.

I believe when person's mind is not mature, heart falls for temporary and unrealistic things. As we grow, our mind become more mature and accept true reality of life. By this time it is our heart which follows reality of life along with mind. So may be it is our mind which can give right or wrong direction to our heart.

Have you notice people are addicted towards music and glamour, it is their heart which attracts them. They don't realize and use their mind to accept this is not good for them. In such cases Ahlul Bayth (A.S) and Quran helps us a lot, as they had already defined what is good and what is not. For normal human mind it is hard to evaluate which activities can lead to disaster. In those cases we need to take help of our religion to accept what it teaches us, rather than following what ever our heart wants.

Reason is not the correct translation for aql.

Brother,

you are are right!  But the Quran has in mind something specific when it used the terms "qalb", "fuad" and "sadr".  The Quran doesn't have in mind "affections" or "emotions" when it uses those terms.

The Quran also has in mind something specific when it uses the term "Aql".  It doesn't  mean "reason".

Here aql is not referring to mind?

Not at all dear brother. :)

"afala taqilun?  "

Is not referring to our minds.

It is talking about our qalb.

"they have hearts but they do not intellect (yaqilun-  AQL) with them"

Aql is spiritual knowledge from our Spirit.  The Spirit infuses our heart with divine knowledge.  This is the Aql that God praises so much in Hadith and in Quran.

NOT our reason!

This is interesting now :-). Can you please explain qalb? how it is different from aql?

Sure.

Qalb is sometjibg that can get corrupted (subject to "fasaad") and the heart can be wholesome (Saleh) or it can be healthy and complete (saleem). (The Quran says, that "in the hearts of hypocrites is a disease", and it says also that those who will benefit in here after are those who come with a heart that is saleem (illa man atallaha bi qalbin saleem).

A healthy heart is the heart that is infused by the Spirit (ruh), a heart that is not cut off from the bathing in the light of the Ruh.  A corrupt heart is the heart that is cut off from that light and is in darkness and is constantly pre-occupied and distracted by dunya.

Spiritual knowledge (aqli knowledge) is NOT conceptual but rather it infuses ones entire being (or existence) and turns a person towards spiritual realities.  It enables one to resist. Ring subjugated by desires and instead it subjugates desires and uses them appropriately.  This is what aql is.  Aqil is NOT reason it has nothing to do with our conceptualizinations.  It is a knowledge of God that has direct impact on our entire being and our character.
