Salamu Alaykum.

Does anyone know if this Hadith is Authentic or weak?

Our master Imam al-Askari (peace be upon him) has also been reported to have said to Abu Hashim al-Ja’fari: “O Abu Hashim! There will come a time where people’s faces are laughing and joyous [while] their hearts are dark and indeterminate. The Sunnah amongst them is innovation and the innovation is Sunnah. The believer amongst them is demeaned and the evil one venerated. Their rulers are oppressive and their scholars through the doors of darkness proceed.Their wealthy pillage the provision of their poor. Their young precede their old, and every ignorant to them is an authority, and every assignee to them is poor. They do not differentiate between the sincere and the doubtful, nor do they know the sheep from wolves. Their scholars are the most evil of God’s creation on the face of earth, because they incline towards Philosophy and Sufism. By Allah! They are of the enemies and people of distortion. They exaggerate in their love for our opponents and they misguide our Shi’a and Followers.” (Safinatul Bihar, By al-Muhadith al-Qummi, vol. 2, p. 58)

Wa aleykumsalaam,

Here is the complete chain and arabic content of this hadeeth,

According to a brother who specialises in ilm al-rijal, these anti-Sufi hadiths are questionable regardless of their impeccable chains.

It is strange that these hadiths, or some of them, are not found in our older books and only appeared when there was hardcore anti-Sufi sentiment amongst many Shi'a near or during the Safawi era.

What do you think bros? @Islamic Salvation @Qa'im

Yeah I know. However, I got my hands on Al-Khoei's grading which grades the Hadith as weak because of Ahmed bin Mohammed bin al-Hassan bin al-Waleed which he grades as unestablished therefore-weak. However, Al-Majlisi and Shaheed Thani say he is Thiqa but then other narrators of the hadith according to them are weak. I think i'll get all the opinions then make a judgement upon it.

YES BROTHER. This is what I have been thinking! But I am not an expert in this field I barely even know the grading upon 6 people so this is defenetly not my field at all. I also contacted a brother who told me that it doesn't matter if it's Sahih of Dhaīf for him because it cannot he referring to ALL practices Sufis have such as detaching from Materialism nor can it be referring upon ALL aspects of Philosophy since in the Tradition of Tawheed al-Mufadhal Imam as-Sadiq (A) praises aristotle.

Also it's very good point that these type of Hadith arent found in our major books which brings suspicion to me.

Hurr al-`Amuli (d. 1693) got the narration from Hadiqat ash-Shi`a by al-Muqaddas al-Ardabeeli (d. 1585), who claims to get it from Sayyid al-Murtada (d. 1044), but I cannot find the narration in any book earlier than al-Ardabeeli's. It could be from a lost book, or it could be fabricated.

As for the chain Sayyid al-Khoei considers Ahmad b. Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. al-Walid to be majhool.

 Salamu Alaykum.

I have two further questions:

Is that the only narrator considered majhool or weak or are there more?

Do you mean Hurr al-Amili fabricated it?

Only that narrator is majhool and therefore weak, but the main problem is not so much the narrator, but the 5 century gap between al-Ardabeeli and Sharif al-Murtada. I don't know where the former is getting the hadith from. Hurr al-`Amuli did not fabricate the narration, he presumably got it from al-Ardabeeli. Ardabeeli either got it from a lost book, or a fabricated book, or an oral report that he does not mention; we're not sure.

I am not sure. In terms of hadiths that condemn all Sufis by name, from the ones I've seen, they tend to be from late books. There are however some narrations in earlier books that may be seen as condemning certain beliefs or behaviours of Sufis.
