Is it okay to download torrent?

Salam,

Is it okay to download a torrent for a software?

I require Matlab for one of my units at University and it is very expensive If I were to buy it.

What are your opinions? (from an Islamic perspective)

Answer: Copyrights must be respected; it is not permissible to copy a software product, if it is against the law.

Answer: It is permissible, per se, to make personal use of such copyrighted books and software.

Answer: If someone else has cracked the software, you can use it.

Answer: If it is against the law, it is not permissible but you can use them.

what If the torrent downloaded you?

why ask such a question online? Why not use tact or common sense, considering whether it is a necessity to bridge the gap between the competition or social class. Are you deriving moneys from it? Nope. Generally many software firms provide student version for free. I.e autodesk.

We need to follow the laws of the country. And most countries are again piracy so no it won't be halal. Also Sirous provided you sources so no you can't download any copyright stuff.

To be honest, it's not cent percent clear to me. Therefore I pasted all the questions that might benefit you.

Also, after pondering a bit, I can comprehend that you cannot crack a software or sell a pirated copy of one but you can use them.

This doesn't make sense to me. It sounds like you can't sell stolen stuff but hey you could use/buy them.
