Assalamu Alaykum

Does procrastinating at work makes my income haram? I mean, the money I make during the time I'm procrastinating.

Is it like stealing from my boss?

I'm a little worried about that because I don't want even a dollar of my income to be haram.

Wa alai kum salam,

I am a bit of an expert and TIME+WORK.

I can authoritatively tell you that the #1 stolen item from the workplace is TIME - across all industries and jobs.

what nonsense. Everyone procrastinates at work, even bosses do it. If you want to be a slave, I suggest finding work in a factory, where you will be worked into your grave.

I am sure many kids making our products will be happy swapping jobs.

procrastination means, lack of work, easy work, thinking time, bad time management, or down time. If you are purposely wasting time, then you will either end up doing longer hours end if the month. Therefore you still end up paying for wasted time.

regarding the typical corporate slave mentality by shianan, the biggest item stolen is not company time, its workers time by the companies, low wages and overtime or policies so guys like shiaman can get promotions on the labour of others.

For an office job it is all about time management. If you are ahead of your work then there is nothing wrong to do something else which is not work related.

For a job in a restaurant etc try procrastinating in front of your manager........ R.I.P

Good question, actually.

You agreed to perform such and such work to the best of your ability for an agreed upon pay rate. If you are meeting your agreements you are fine. You are not under obligation to go beyond the agreement. If you are not performing the work you agreed to perform, you need to do it or find another job.

As for income being haram, I've heard no ruling on this specifically. Your income is halal unless you are intentionally decieving your employer or outright stealing. Doing work that is below standard is grounds for termination but it is not stealing.

Any office job observes certain margin. Procrastinating is, at some point, understandable. There are times in which you are under pressure and other times in which you work less or slower due to procrastination. As long as when you are needed, you are there, I think you are not failing your word nor your boss. I am a terrible procrastinator at times. I remember days in which I have just drank coffee and smoked cigs. But there are other days in which I stayed longer than 12 hours, kept working the whole weekend, and did work nobody asked me. I think that is what matters: commitment. I procrastinate when I know nothing bad will happen and there is no need from me to work hard.

Perfect Question: I liked that you are this much observant. Don't do procrastination anymore. I know sometimes it's not in your hand. For example, my boss used to come to work environment and talk randomly at internship. I told him this is not good, but he still was doing that. What I did, I went out of work environment to a room, and I was working there alone. It costed me a lot, since I didn't get the job, but I finished the project.

I really liked this observation (احسنت)
