I go to the gym because I am trying to better my mental and physical health but I noticed I can not work out without listening to music. When I'm done working out, instead of feeling rejoiced I feel guilty. What is recommended? I am not fluent in Arabic so I really don't understand nashids. Is it better if I just listen to beats with no lyrics?

Salam,

I have been working out all my adult life and for the last 7 or 8 years ive been weightlifting because of work and life not giving me enough time to do other forms of work out.

My advise to you is for you to learn to not be dependent on music in order to perform. You should work out as a result of your own willpower, not music or anyone ells pushing you to work out, that way you are increasing your willpower as well and the level of self control.

What I do is that I download islamic lectures on my phone, theres apps that make it possible to download youtube clips to your phone, then I listen to lectures while I work out. This way, not only am I working out my physical strength but also my spiritual and intellectual strength.

This is the optimal way of using your time at the gym, also the lectures make me less aware of how tired I am because my mind is focused on the lecture while my body is focused on the weights.

Also, remember to say Bismillah before you start to work out, that way your work out becomes an act of worship as well and dedicate your strength fi sabilillah!

music is permissibile as long as its not really nasty and uses really bad language, basically as long as the music is positive or used positively than its ok.

This is the greatest advice I've heard in a while.

Music is a stimuli. If the purpose is right. Health in this case then I have no objection against it.

The mixing of gender in the gym is more problematic.

exactly that is very true its hard to work out if there are half naked woman working out in front of you maybe if there would be segregated gyms that might be better for the future inshallah. Until then I think its best to go to the gym at a time where many do not go.

Ya I usually never get a gym membership unless it has that. I currently go to UFC gym I don't know if they have one in your area but those are the best because they have everything 24 hour fitness has plus the mixed martial arts stuff if you want to do it upstairs

Its better to depend on willpower than music as a motivator otherwise, you might find yourself addicted.

You can gym with blindfolds on and no, I am not joking.

I go to a 24/7 gym and if there is a case where there are too many bad dressed women around me, I put on a blind fold and keep working out.

So I do not let them affect me with their music since I am listening to lectures, nor do I let them affect me by their women since I am blindfolded.

The blindfold I am using is dark enough for me not to see who is who and the shapes, but I can still see enough to prevent myself from hitting someone while working out.

I tried listening to Islamic lectures at the gym, but It is so hard to concentrate lol. Like the moment you start doing your exercise, then you miss so much of what the speaker says.

I personally don't think all beats are halal to listen to. If the beats are suitable for nightclub/entertainment purposes then it is completely harram. So be careful, since most gym beats are meant to be beaty and can be suitable for a nightclub type environment.

I prefer listening to nasheeds/ahlulbayt (as) songs to cancel out the harram music played in my gym.

Well, then at least you will be able to hear the lecture in between sets when you have your focus back, which is probably the majority of time spend at the gym.

No. All aspects of a song is Haraam, especially the beats itself.

Nightclub music is completely different from music playing at the gym, though the two could sound similar.

90% of music would not be played at nightclubs, and are of different genres.

I don't know what they play at night clubs and I'm surprised that so many Muslims do. What about classical music? Or military style marches? That might help you stay on your rhythm and your marja might rule it as halal.

Well the the OP hasn't specified what sort of beats. I was just telling the OP to be careful incase he searches up "gym beats" because a lot of them I would imagine could be used for clubs(especially the electronic beats).

Lets not be quick to judge because knowing what type of music is played there doesn't mean you frequently visit it or that you have been there. You seem to imply that @Islandsandmirrors and I have probably frequently visited nightclubs, which isn't the case for me.

I have some acquaintances on snapchat who sometimes set their story in nightclubs, so I admit that sometimes, I do get a feel for what is played there(not that I should of viewed it).

if I indicated that I implied something like that I would be in fear of my life brother so ya I never did... lol but the snapchat thing makes sense I heard their stock is out it might be a good investment inshallah I want to look into that.

I have seen people making authoritative statements about what kind of music is played in dance clubs in other topics. My comment about knowing was not directed at anyone, and, honestly, I meant it to be slightly ironic and humorous.
