Salaams everyone,

This is my first time posting on shiachat though I've perused the forums many times before as a guest.

I moved to Beirut last summer with my husband (he's from here, I'm an American convert with no arabic). While we are very close with my in-laws, because of the language barrier I'm having a very hard time making friends. I'm in the house most of the day with just my son (he's 2) and so there hasn't been much opportunity to just meet people. I've been getting increasingly lonely and so I thought I might try posting here.

I'm really eager to meet other english speakers here in Beirut (just other ladies please, sorry brothers :P )

Thanks for reading this far!

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum Sister Batoul,

I recommend you start up with inner voice.

http://innervoicebeirut.org/

They hold dinners and lectures.  They actually have one coming up for the birth of Imam Mahdi.

I also recommend you put your name and number with your masjid.

Ask your husband which one is the closest to you, and they will contact you when they start up begginer's Arabic courses for free.  I have books available I can give them to you, so you have an idea of how they will teach the course.

I'd be more than happy to meet up with you at any masjid at the sisters praying area.  For your two year old, the Sayyid Mohammad Hussain library at haret hreik has storytime in conversational arabic every friday afternoon at 4:30 pm.

God bless you and your family.  Make sure you are active, because if you are always staying home, it will be difficult.  There is also a pine park called Horsh Beriut.

They have activities throughout the year, and one coming up  May 16.

Have a great weekend.

Wa Alaaykum Assalaam Laayla,

Thank you so much for your advice! I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I actually just heard about innervoice right after I posted this a few days ago, so I'm planning on going to the celebration this weekend for Imam Mehdi, a.s. (maybe we can introduce ourselves properly if you're also going :D). I did not know about the story time, though, and it sounds like a wonderful activity! And I also had no idea that masjids here gave Arabic classes!!! I mean, it just seems so counterintuitive, I guess.

Thanks again and Fi Aman Allah!

Salam,

You could also learn through speaking, find sisters who want to learn English and meet up with them and teach each other.

Bismehe Ta3ala,

Assalam Alikum.

Unfortunately, I will not be attending.  I usually like my children to be involved in activities, so when the price is ridiculously high, we can't attend.

Local masjids have activities correlating with islamic events or birthdays of our Imams.  Just give them your phone number and they will send you messages.

There is also a community center on the main road of haret hreik.  They always have plays, puppet shows, reading activities. All you need is an ID for you and your child and they will give you free passes to attend.  It is involved with the multiplicity.  Call them and find out what events take place.

Ask your hubby, what area you are located and most likely there is a municipality.  A local library and multiple event take place, if you can't find the municipality, let me know the name and I can direct you to the website or number.

There are many things you can do in Beriut.

How are you sister? Masjid Hassanayan is offering Arabic classes at Haret Hreik.
