so all this time I have had mutton biryani, its been sheep and not goat???

No, "mutton" is commonly used for both sheep and goat, esp among the desis.

Our mutton biryanis and mutton karahis are mostly prepared with goat meat, although I don't mind sheep for a change.

Goat meat is called chevon.

Yes, in France.

Wiki says:

In some parts of Asia, particularly India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; the word "mutton" is sometimes used to describe both goat and sheep meat, despite its more specific meaning (limited to the meat of adult sheep) in the UK, US, Australia and other English-speaking countries.

So my team and I were working on a major project in Singapore. It was about 8pm. I was starving and...

ME: I could do with a nice hot plate of spicy mutton biryani.
NB: Ah, you know the best sheep comes from Australia.
ME: Goat biryani NB.
NB: You said mutton.
ME: Yup.
NB: Mutton is sheep mate.
ME: Beg to differ NB.
NB: Mate, what are you on about?
ME: Everyone knows mutton is goat.

IY (Indian): NB - SM is right, mutton is goat.
NB: not you too IY.

Then a couple of other people got involved. We used different online sources to prove our point and spent about 20 minutes on the issue. It was the funniest conversation...
