Four Bahraini female detainees released from prison

Four Bahraini female detainees were released from prison on Sunday.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA):
Medina Ali as well as sisters Fatima, Amal, and Iman Abdullah, were serving a three-year prison sentence.

Ali, a former sales assistant, was detained in May 2017 and later convicted of harboring a fugitive.

Meanwhile, the Abdullah sisters were jailed along with Fatima’s husband over what rights campaigners say are trumped-up charges.

The women’s release comes as Manama freed more the 500 inmates under the so-called Alternative Punishment Law.

The law was introduced in May 2018 and allows judges to free prisoners that the judiciary deems are unlikely to commit a ‘crime’ in the future.

US military convoy enters oil fields in northeast Syria

A large US military convoy entered oil fields in Northeastern Syria despite widespread condemnation of the deployment as being tantamount to robbery.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA): A large US military convoy entered oil fields in Northeastern Syria despite widespread condemnation of the deployment as being tantamount to robbery.

The United States sent new deployments to the Syrian provinces of Hasakah and Deir Ezzur from neighboring Iraq on Sunday, according to the state-run Al-Ikhbariya TV.

The US vehicles were carrying logistical equipment that would be provided to the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish militant group, in the Eastern countryside of Deir Ezzur.

Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu news agency reported that the convoy contained 4x4 pickups, ambulances, minibuses and 100 rigs filled with fuel oil.

According to the report, the deployment is the second of its kind in less than a month.

Earlier this month, the US army deployed armored vehicles, pickups, heavy construction equipment and about 150 rigs to the region.

The deployments come after President Donald Trump stated in October that the US troops would remain in Syria to "secure" the oilfields there.

Damascus as well as regional movers and shakers voiced their strong opposition to Trump's decision to seize Syrian oil fields.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated that US attempts to control Syria’s oil fields were “illegal” and amount to “robbery”.

Trump’s decision came after he initially ordered the withdrawal of all US troops from Northeastern Syria, clearing the path for a Turkish incursion into the region. Ankara says it wants to eliminate Kurdish YPG militants which it regards as terrorists affiliated with the homegrown PKK militant group.

The developments come as Damascus is in great need of its major oil deposits in order to address its energy needs and rebuild the country amid crippling Western sanctions.

Syria is currently extracting oil at only 10 percent of its pre-war capacity.

Manama’s security forces continued to enforce a ban on Shiite Friday prayers in Diraz’s Imam Al Sadiq Mosque this week. The ban was imposed in the summer of 2016.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA):

Only a small number of worshipers managed to gain access to the mosque to perform individual prayers.

According to the residents, this Friday marks the 191 consecutive weeks since the ban went into effect.

The village is home to some 30,000 people, who have been subjected to an unprecedented lockdown by Manama’s security forces since the denaturalization of Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim in 2016.

Militants attack refinery, gas facilities in central Syria

Militants attack refinery, gas facilities in central Syria

The Syrian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources says foreign-sponsored Takfiri militants have launched a barrage of rockets at the main refinery and two gas facilities in the country’s central province of Homs, causing minor damage and disrupting production.

The ministry said in a statement that the near-simultaneous attacks targeted the oil refinery in Homs, located more than located 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of the capital Damascus, and the two gas facilities – one south of the city and one in the desert to its east – at Saturday’s dawn.

The statement added that several production units were damaged as a result, and that repair teams were working alongside firefighters to try to restore output as quickly as possible.

Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Ghanem described the attacks as systematic and coordinated, emphasizing that firefighting teams immediately rushed to the scene and managed to contain the blaze within the first hours of the attacks.

The refinery in Homs is one of Syria’s two main refineries, covering most domestic demand for diesel, heating fuel, gasoline and other products.

The development came only a day after the Britain-based war monitor said Daesh militants had launched an attack on Thursday night on a gas field in the desert region in the eastern countryside of Homs, killing 13 government soldiers and four workers.

Elsewhere in the northwestern province of Idlib, Syrian government forces have liberated more areas in the southern countryside of the province from the grip of foreign-backed Takfiri militants.

Syria’s official news agency SANA reported that government troops have established control over the villages of Um al-Tineh, al-Madirseh and Bernan.

The came after fierce clashes with militants affiliated to the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham Takfiri terrorist group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, SANA added, noting that army soldiers inflicted heavy losses upon them.

A number of the extremists, however, managed to flee to nearby areas, and a search operation is underway to hunt them down.

Several Saudi forces killed, injured in Yemeni attack on Najran base

Several Saudi forces killed, injured in Yemeni attack on Najran base

The Yemeni army has successfully hit a Saudi base in Najran belonging to the country’s border guards with a ballistic missile in a retaliatory attack that killed and wounded dozens of Saudi forces, says the Army spokesman.

The spokesman for Yemen's armed forces, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said Friday the missile was a Badr P-1 which hit Bir Askar camp in Saudi Arabia’s Najran.

The missile has killed and injured tens of Saudi military personnel, General Saree announced.

The top general said the Friday attack was in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes against the innocent people of Yemen.

The retaliation came after a Saudi airstrike on a popular market in Yemen’s mountainous northwestern province of Sa’ada Tuesday, in the third deadly assault on the same location in just over a month.

The UN on Thursday strongly condemned the Saudi attack on al-Raqou market in the Monabbih district of the province, which claimed the lives of 17 civilians, including 12 Ethiopian migrants.

“The attacks on al-Raqou market raise deeply troubling questions about the commitment of the parties to the conflict to uphold international humanitarian law,” Lise Grande, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, said.

“Every attack of this kind is a gross violation,” she added.

Back on November 22, a Saudi airstrike on al-Raqou market killed 10 civilians, again including Ethiopian nationals.

At least another 10 civilians were killed and 22 wounded in a second such incident just days later, according to the United Nations.

Al-Houthi renews Frances accusation of killing Yemeni civilians

Member of the Yemeni Supreme Political Council Mohammed Ali Al Houthi renewed the accusation of France participation in killing more than 17 civilians and injuring 21 others, most of whom were African immigrants, by Saudi bombardment targeting Al-Raqw market in Munabih border district of Sa’adah Governorate, using French-made Artillery.

He confirmed in Twitter on Wednesday that “the use of French weapons and expertise in the aggression is a crime that French law overlooks in exchange for arms deals." He described this crime and its predecessors as "the terrorism of the US-Saudi and Emirati aggression and its allies in Yemen."

Member of the Political Council accused France last October, when he refuted the claims of French President Emmanuel Macron that said his country's weapons are not used in the Yemen war, white it was proved their use by the coalition forces, causing displacement of half a million Yemenis.

Al-Houthi refuted the French president's allegations, saying: The French "Hercules" artillery is used in the Yemen border lands, and more than half a million residents of the Yemeni border governorates have been displaced by it.

Deadly attack on Yemen market 3rd in just over month: UN

The United Nations has strongly condemned the recent attack against a popular market in Yemen’s mountainous northwestern province of Sa’adah, describing it as the third deadly assault on the same location in just over a month, without saying who was responsible for the incident or what weaponry was used.

Coalition of aggression spokesman Turki al-Malki, in a statement carried by Saudi state-run news agency SPA, said an initial review of the operation in Sa’adah indicated possible “incidental losses and collateral damage.”

Wikileaks releases new docs on doctored Syria gas report

Wikileaks releases new docs on doctored Syria gas report

Wikileaks has leaked new documents regarding the probe by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) into an alleged chemical attack in Syria, showing that a senior OPCW official ordered the removal of a "dissenting" report.

One of the published documents shows Sebastien Braha, chief of cabinet at the OPCW, ordered in an email that “all traces” of a report from Ian Henderson, a then-OPCW inspector in Syria’s Douma, be erased from the body's registries.

“Please get this document out of DRA [Documents Registry Archive]... And please remove all traces, if any, of its delivery/storage/whatever in DRA,” the email read.

The findings of Henderson claimed that two cylinders, found in the alleged chemical attack site and thought to have probably contained chemicals, were likely manually placed in the area rather than dropped from a plane or helicopter.

Only terrorists controlling the area had land access to the area at the time.

Wikileaks claims the email was leaked from an exchange between senior OPCW officials and the body’s fact finding mission deployed to the Syrian city to investigate claims of an alleged chemical attack in the area April last year.

Another OPCW email exchange released by the whistleblower website on Friday showed that the body had ordered its eight inspectors in Douma - except one, a paramedic - be excluded from discussions on the probe in July 2018.

A third leaked document detailed discussions between the OPCW and four toxicologists with expertise in chemical weapons.

The experts claimed that “no correlation” had been found between symptoms observed among the alleged chemical attack victims and chemicals possibly used in such an attack, according to the leaked document.

“The symptoms observed were inconsistent with exposure to chlorine and no other obvious candidate chemical causing the symptoms could be identified,” the document read.

Spokesman:

Yemeni forces have laudably imposed new military equations on Saudi-led coalition

https://en.abna24.com/news//yemeni-forces-have-laudably-imposed-new-military-equations-on-Saudi-led-coalition_997307.html

Yemen’s soldiers have adeptly managed to impose military equations on the Saudi-led coalition involved in a deadly campaign against the impoverished country, says the spokesman for Yemeni armed forces.

“Our forces are fighting battles of independence and liberation, and continue to carry out their tasks and duties in defense of Yemen and the Yemeni nation. They continue to strengthen their defense capabilities by liberating and securing expanses of land across Yemen and confronting the Saudi-led aggression and blockade. They have been able to impose new military equations on enemies based on striking strategies,” Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a press conference in the capital Sana’a on Sunday afternoon.

“Yemeni armed forces are able to give befitting response to all enemy military operations given their size and purpose, and target all hostile movements that constitute a threat to our forces, our people, and our country.”

“It is legitimate to respond with painful strikes as long as the (Saudi-led) coalition of aggression targets our people and our country… Military installations and hardware of the aggressors on our soil, in our territorial waters, and on our islands are legitimate targets for our forces.”

More than half the total number of the coalition attacks, the spokesman said, targeted areas in the northwestern province of Sa’ada. The figure stood at not less than 3,615 raids, he added. The northern province of Hajjah was exposed to more than 1,427 raids, while Sana'a province witnessed more than 424 attacks.

Saree underscored that Yemeni forces carried out 1,686 operations, including 607 offensive operations, 1,044 raids and 35 infiltrations, in the year 2019.

He said the Yemeni armed forces could intercept and target 69 coalition military aircraft, including seven fighter jets, nine unmanned aerial vehicles and 53 spy drones, during the mentioned period.

According to the spokesman, Yemeni snipers carried out 16,643 operations, fatally shooting 228 Saudi troopers, 142 Sudanese mercenaries and 16,050 Yemeni militiamen loyal to former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

“Anti-armor units also conducted 1,180 operations, destroying 192 military vehicles with personnel and military equipment aboard, 138 armored vehicles, 40 military bulldozers, 40 tanks plus 155 heavy and medium-size machine guns.”

On Sunday, a ballistic missile struck a military graduation parade of newly-recruited forces in the southern Yemeni province of Dhale. Ten people were killed.

“The missile hit the guest platform just 20 minutes after the end of the military graduation parade, causing a huge blast,” said Fuad Jubary, a pro-Hadi military spokesman.

“All the high-ranking commanders had left the sports stadium just minutes before the explosion, so only soldiers were killed on the scene,” he said.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 100,000 lives so far.

A member of Kuwait Parliament Khalil Abul in a message protested to the speaker of parliament over hosting an anti-Iran meeting in Kuwait, saying it is dangerous.

In his message, Abul criticized Kuwaiti parliament speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim for hosting a separatist anti-Iran group.

He added that hosting a so-called liberation of Ahvaz group and appreciating them is in vain and politically dangerous.

Taking such measure will not be to Kuwait's benefit, Abdul said, adding that official support of an armed group which is against a neighboring country is not acceptable.

Earlier on Saturday, Kuwaiti chargé d'affaires in Tehran was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry in the wake of hosting an anti-Iran seminar in Kuwait.

https://en.abna24.com/news//sheikh-isa-qassim-release-of-detainees-must-be-part-of-any-political-settlement_997929.html

Bahrain’s highest religious authority Sheikh Isa Qassim said that any resolution to the kingdom’s lingering crisis must include the release of political prisoners.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency (ABNA):

“There is no solution to the crisis … except by releasing prisoners,” the senior cleric said in a statement on Sunday.

Bahrain has the highest incarceration rate per capita in the Middle East and is home to an estimated 4,000 political prisoners. Among them is the country’s opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman who is serving a life sentence on trumped up charges and marked his fifth year behind bars last week.

In his latest statement, Sheikh Qassim described the opposition leader’s imprisonment as “an example of injustice.”

“The imprisonment of any participant in a sit-in, march and protest demanding rights is a blatant injustice,” the statement adds.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/05/17/724281900/in-Syria-reports-of-19-medical-facilities-bombed-since-april-28

"On 15 May 2019, Syrian government forces bombed the Tarmala Maternity and Children's Hospital in South Idlib, completely destroying the facility, which had served about 6,000 people a month. According to the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, it was the 19th health-care facility bombed in Syria since April 28"

I recently saw people on Al Jazeera discussing the bombing of hospitals in Syria during the government's air campaign. It had me wondering:

Is the bombing of medical facilities proving itself to be an effective strategy to defeat anti-government forces?

And what will the recovery if medical facilities look like post-war? (Assuming a post-war might come within the next decade?).

Maybe bombing hospitals is a piece of the gold standard that might otherwise be necessary to defeat ISIS or other insurgencies. Where nation's have failed, perhaps Assad will find success in these methods.

Controversial? Sure. But maybe necessary?

Saw this pbs documentary on the civil war. It's pretty good. There are some graphic scenes, it's certainly for adult audiences. It's filmed largely in and around a hospital.

@Ashvazdanghe

On the one hand, the Supreme Leader of Iran has stressed on a number of occasions that the “Axis of Resistance” has successfully countered various Western schemes and has made notable strides. On the other hand, more and more Arab states are openly normalising relations with the State of Israel, along with Russia and China, while North Africa is becoming even more unstable in the aftermath of the war on Libya. Based on the evidence of the latter, the “Axis of Resistance” seems to be losing rather than gaining. How can these two standpoints or realities be reconciled?
