Aslaamu-alaikum to all the readers. I have a question that I was asked by a friend recently but got stuck for an answer. His question started with, in the Shia Fiqh, is The act of Hajj (pilgrimage) obligatory (Wajib) on females? To which I replied that Hajj is wajib on every Muslim, from my common sense. HOWEVER, he further asked me to prove if any females in prophets household (more so referring to Lady Khatijah sa, Lady Fatima sa, Lady Zainab sa) performed hajj and asked for prove. I have tried to research but couldn't find any obvious answers or hadees in regards. Has any one got more information to enlighten me about this? Many thanks, Jazakallah

Salamun alaykum.

Some points should be taken into consideration:

1. Before emigration, the Muslims including the females living in Mecca did not have any problem for visiting Ka'bah. However, the Islamic rituals were different from those of the polytheists who have the full control over Mecca and Ka'bah. So Muslims could not perform Hajj based on Islamic rituals. Of course, according to some Verses, Hajj was not an obligation on Muslims at that time. There are different views regarding the year when it was obligated. Some believe it was in the 6th year after Hijrah while others believe in the 9th or 10th year after Hijrah.

So for Muslims who passed away before this time (including lady Khadijah) it was not an obligation yet.

2. Based on this explanation, Muslims could not perform Hajj before the conquest of Mecca in the 8th year after Hijrah. So the first official Hajj of Muslims was in the 9th year after Hijrah.

3. The only official Hajj in which the Holy Prophet (PBUH) took part was in the 10th year after Hijrah and that is known as Hajjat al-Wida' (farewell Hajj). According to some narrations, he took his wives with her:

رُوِيَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْعَبَّاسِ سُئِلَ عَنْ مُتْعَةِ الْحَجِّ فَقَالَ أَهَلَّ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ وَ الْأَنْصَارُ وَ أَزْوَاجُ النَّبِيِّ ص فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاع‏

 مستدرك ‏الوسائل ج : 8 ص : 82

4. The main condition of Hajj is Istita'ah (الاستطاعه: having abilities from various angles). Usually men are more likely to have this condition specially in the early Islam.
