Fatigue

One person has the energy to climb a mountain. Another can't get out of bed, or pick up a piece of paper from the floor. What's going on?

We have the energy. Most of us with a keyboard eat sufficiently for that. So potential capacity for motion is not the issue. It's the starter engine.

Why the malfunction? Why the malaise, that dull, dragging fatigue that delays basic functioning? How does laziness develop?

Though you seem to have used the terms interchangably, my understanding of the terms fatigue and laziness, and this may or may not be accurate, is that they are two very different things. I tend to think that fatigue is a physical state (ie. someone physically doesn't have the energy to do something, and this could be for a variety of reasons eg: low iron, low vitamin D, no sleep etc) whereas laziness is more of a mental state (ie. a person has the physical energy to do something but not the mental motivation). But yeah, in terms of how laziness develops and then how do we overcome this, this is a great question.

What you eat can make you feel tired and reluctant to get out of bed. Eat healthy. Google list of anti-inflammatory foods you should be eating.

Many studies have shown that fatigue can also be linked to mental health, infact many times when someone is constantly fatigued, yes it may mean lack of vitamins etc. or other physical health issues. However, it can also mean they may have underlying mental health problems.

Definitely Depression is not merely a mental state, its physical effects are even worse than one can estimate... prominently fatigue and loss of energy in addition to psychological symptoms like longing to stay in the bed., loss of interest in any kind activity etc.

but interestingly, overcoming depression isn't difficult as it might look, take a shower, and just keep whatsApping buddies or read books. Keeping yourself busy in even productive tasks could yield better results in one's career too.
