AOA,

I was just wondering what people on SC do in their free time? I really want to develop a nice hobby or something but I cannot find anything that interests me or something that I am talented in... :(

I want to polish a skill and be really good at it but I honestly don't know what... before I use to do long distance running and really enjoyed it i was getting better at it and setting new goals but after I started wearing the hijab running is such a challenge, its just too suffocating..I have tried but it just doesn't work, and there is no women only gym near my home..

I usually now find myself scrolling through Instagram feeds and watching YouTube videos in my free time which is a total waste of time...I have tried Reading books but I realized its really not my thing.. I wish it was though I really admire people who read alot..

What are some productive/ educational pass time you guys have?

WS

Below is of course after work and wajib duties.

Weekday

1. Gym

2. Play Xbox with my son

3. Argile and my SC posts

Weekend

1. Fishing

2 Play Xbox with my son

3. Argile and my SC posts

At my age, with work and raising my two boys I do not have much time for anything else. I used to play Rugby League when I was younger however my body cant move like it used to lol

In the last year I have become a great cook and that is a hobby lol

In those rare moments I try very hard to do nothing which is a struggle for me... lol. I am the kind of person who will sit down to watch TV and barely two minutes will pass before I start thinking, 'this book shelf could do with some tidying' or 'if I sort the laundry right now I will have one less thing to do on the weekend' lol.

Sorry got carried away with my life story . .:woot:

Being able to have a hobby depends on the other things in your life. If you have little kids and a full time job like I do then it leaves very little time and energy for a hobby. However, if you are single or do not have kids you can give almost anything a try and easily continue.

I enjoyed reading books a lot in my younger years, a habit that I have almost given up now, sadly. These days I divide my time between work, house work, kids and SC.

Last year I started learning calligraphy. I was doing it with my daughter but then when she lost interest I gave it up too even though I enjoyed it very much.

Why don't you enroll in a baking/desserts course and see how you like it. One of my friends who is a dentist by profession couldn't continue working outside home after she had kids , so she learnt baking and now runs a successful cake business from home.

I read books and stargaze with binoculars, but I really would like to pick up some more interesting/useful hobbies someday when I have more time. I do a little martial arts, but not quite enough to call it a hobby. I know how to crochet and sew, but I've not practiced enough to get good at it. My daughter wants me to garden with her, but so far I've been a failure at that. Apparently I have a black thumb. I used to keep several aquaria with beautiful freshwater fish. My favorite part was the setup - that's why I had so many. But I don't have time, space, or money for that nowadays.

I make journals out of... well honestly anything, but I like recycling and repurposing old stuff.  If I find a library or a junk store getting rid of books, I cherry pick for ones I'd want in my collection, but if the book is in horrible shape, I salvage what I can and make journals.  I guess they're junk journals, but I try to leave more room for writing than most junk journal makers do.

@reisiger I didn't know what junk journaling is, so I looked it up. That looks so creative and fun! I imagine they make great gifts too, but I'm not sure I'd be able to cut apart even damaged books.

Oh it's a struggle.  The book has to be absolute garbage or trashed beyond repair, but it is insanely fun, plus if it saves something from the landfill, why not, right?  I'll post some pictures here if you'd like to see what I do.  My father in law gets me tons of foreign postage stamps, so my theme is usually travel/adventure oriented.

HA! Well I mean if I were to do it, I would probably omit the Christian sketches in it.  But yeah, Indy rocks! :)

If you omit the Christian sketches, there's probably not much left.

Salam

I watch TV a lot nowadays my attention has shifted from melodrama and lovestories to things and shows which makes some sense

And I  m all time busy with my WhatsApp fb and also sc sometimes

And if I m done with TV I talk

Its like either I watch TV or talk and most of the times do both simultaneously

I m talkative I talk to almost everybody about almost everything

So when I get free time from all this

I read novels I check my Watt pad -nowadays am avoiding it

And I use to sing songs I loved it BT its haram so now a days I try to avoid it as well so now I recite nawhas

And I google about every thing

And when I find myself free I oftenly start admiring myself in mirror and start doing makeup m free to do makeup anytime ..so girlish lol

I docarate my house I visit my friends and have fun in free time

And last I know most of what I said wasn't productive or  creative

But makeup is creative

Well       lastly if I'm busy  still I get some time for this part of my life

I watch moon silently

At night in dark I keep lights off of my room and admire moon       it just looks beautiful and this moment of my day is just complete contended mesmerising beautiful I know myself more I get closer to myself I enjoy it well this is not creative but u can try it

A couple of the most edifying books l ever read came from same-such salvage operations.

Another time l was hunting around for info on some subject and found at our library's 'unwanted for sale' a ~50 page summary and explanation of that entire techno-subject. A handbook published in the 1950s.

Salaam alaikum, brother!  Doesn't that just make your day? I need to get better about restoration.  I found a first edition Modern Panarion in a discard bin.  I mean it's theosophical garbage, but it's over 100 years old.  I did some work on it, but I think I can do better.  Might rip it up and start over.

What was the subject of the handbook (if it's cool to ask)?

This one that comes to mind had to do with a myriad of problem-solutions to pipe flow.

About another book l read later was the best "into English" translation, done in 1939. Got that one at a garage sale for 25cents, l think the cost was.

I also have some 1849 books and some other stuff from the old President Polk's personal library. They were discarded and a local book seller recovered them as they were thrown into the garbage during "restoration work".

Through the years I have tried many different hobbies. From stamp collection and journal writing as childhood hobbies to video gaming, martial arts, sports, jogging, weight training, then religion mainly Quran study during university days and comparative religion over the interwebs. After engineering my physical hobbies faded away and I read more Islamic and Islamic history books, found Shiism as best and most probably the only authentic/intact Abrahamic religion left so embraced it tightly. Then I sought a return to physical activity again and ended up with long strolls through a forest (with occasional violent pest death on my farmland) to be my thing. I started walking 5 miles on weekend nights. Shooting rodents and other harmful pests introduced me to guns and marksmanship. All this time video games and movies remained as my entertainment option. Then as work and child responsibility coupled with a dislike for pushing the vermin to near extinction took their toll I left my guns and forest strolls. I employed self teaching and built a biogas and generator setup for my house and kitchen, diy'ed and set up solar panels and wired them to power my residence. I also built a electrolysis device which I installed in my car and it breaks up water to give hydrogen and oxygen which is fed to the engine and it improved its mileage significantly. I also self taught myself electrical and electronics science.

Now I have a proper full time job so I have precious little time left for things, even Shiachat. The weekends get gobbled up by my wife and her errands (get this fixed, do this do that, drive me there, get me that, blah blah you know) usually and if not I offer them to my youngest 4 year old because that is totally worth it.
