How does one learn to recite Noha, just out of curiosity.

just practice bro. lots and lots of practice. correct pronunciation + shouting at the top of your voice + maintaining the lilting melody + controlling the men doing matam is not easy in any sense

I'm going to try and translate one a night after I finish my hacking blog. Id like arab/ farsi/ other language speakers to contribute too

I hope others do. I enjoy listening, but it's so much more meaningful when I can listen with understanding.

South asian poetry is really overlooked I think. people dismiss the language as clumsy. coarse etc, but in realitty it has the ability to hide entire oceans of meaning in very simple words. for example something like this in the example above:

Quote

Dukh da deen dhalna nai, main tan val valna nai
The pain will never leave, I will never return

the words in punjabi have a very simple rhyme, and phoenetically both halves of the line are almost identical. but they mean completely different things, and yet are made to link together through the poem, and convey two incredibly deep stories - the suffering of Sakina (sa) and that she would never return to her father or baby brothers bodies again.

south asian poetry often is more focused on the "gaps" between words, making the listener fill the unsaid things themselves, instead of using flowery metaphors and fancy language. I like that.

Absolutely heartbreaking for the Lady of Light in Arabic

This one is in Farsi (English subs)- I don't speak Farsi, but it became the soundtrack of my life for a while (I hum to myself a lot). I am thinking of writing and reciting a "fan art" poem in English and Farsi to the tune of this beautiful piece. It really breaks my heart:

Alhamdullilah, there are a large number of latmiyahs that have been tranated to English which you can watch online.

Is it intonation or singing?  I have heard nohas before but I am not surewhat category does it fall in.

We don't like saying "singing" because the implication that it is associated with happiness, dancing, rejoicing etc.

its more akin to a dirge than a song. what do we do to dirges, do we chant? recite? intonate? I dunno. I just say "read" and leave it vague

this is a particularly meaningful video for me, because I was in shaam when this video was being recorded (2011). its one of the last videos of Sayyeda Zainab (sa) shrine open and free and thronged with pilgrims. the recitor is sat facing the front door, at fajr of arbaeen, so he is looking at the zarih of Lady Zainab (sa), reciting a noha dedicated to her suffering. it could well be that me and my brothers passed at this exact moment, while this video is being recorded, as we entered/ left the room for fajr

Ay Ghairat Marium, tera bazaar mein jaana
Oh the modesty of Lady Marium (as), who had to go to the markets (of Kufa and Shaam)

here is a live version of the noha. pay attention to the shrieks at around 1 minute as the matam "lifts". these are the paki version of "sarkhat". Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) said "may allahs mercy be upon the sarkhat (shrieks) raised in grief at our rememberance".

the difference between paki/ desi matam and arab/iranian matam, is that pakis REALLY hit themselves hard. most mallangs chests are actually permanently black from bruising.

here is the studio version

Name: Aaja way laal asghar
Language: Punjabi
Country of Origin: Pakistan
Author/ poet: Mukhtar Khokar

this is not a noha technically, it is a "vehn". it is what is recited when the replicas (taboot) are brought out.

this is narrating the burial of the 6 month old ali asghar (as), the conversation between his father and mother (Imam Hussain (as) and Lady Rhubaab (sa)), and her final lullaby to him as he was buried

video starts with the poet (mukhtar khokar) narrating the events, before he begins the behn. if you want to skip to the actual vehn then it begins at 2 mins 12.

...meh qabar banawan
(Imam hussain talking)...I will make the grave (of ali asghar)

rall keh dafan kareh nai
we will bury him together

Quran aakhday, shariat rasool akhd dee ay, koi pyoo puttar da qabbar na banay
the quran says, the sharia of the prophet says that no father should dig the grave of his son

koi pyoo puttar da laash na chaway
no father should ever lift the body of his son

rhubaab hattan tay chayeh
Rhubaab (Ali asghar (as) Mother) lifted the body into her arms

Hussain qabar banaiy
Hussain made the grave

cheh maan da bachara
the six month old baby

rhubaab dittay, hussain qabar wich layeh
Rubaab handed him to Hussain, Hussain placed him in the grave

sayed aakhday mere naal daffan karraan
Imam Hussain (as) said "help me bury the body"

hiqq pasay maa beh gaiyyeh
on one side of the grave, his mother sat down

<zakir pauses the narration to say>

dua mango, jiwain daffan qaraynde payn shallah qabar na vekh
do a dua, that you never see how they buried the body

<zakir resumes narration>

pyun mitti chaiyyeh
the father lifted the dirt (to place in the grave)

Maa dukh bariyai
the mother was filled with pain, filled her hands too (with dirt)

lekin rhubaab jaldi hatt (?) laiyen
but Rhubaab quickly moved her hands away (in grief)

sayed qaindi daffan naiy qaraindi
Imam Hussain (as) said "will you not bury the body"

aakhi reht garram hai, asghar naram hai
she said "the dirt to hot, my asghar is soft"

sayed pairan tay mitti paiy
Imam Hussain placed the dirt over ali asghars feet

Maa baiti rai
Ali asghars Mother remained seated (watching)

pinjliyan tay mitti ai
the dirt reached Ali asghars (as) legs

Maa baiti rai
Ali asghars Mother remained seated (watching)

(?) te mitti ai
the dirt reached ali asghars (as) hips

Maa baiti rai
Ali asghars Mother remained seated (watching)

shikkam tay mitti ai
the dirt reached ali asghar (as) stomach

Maa baiti rai
Ali asghars Mother remained seated (watching)

jera seena tay mitti ai
when the dirt reached ali asghar (as) chest

utt keh maa turr paiy yeh
his mother stood up and walked away (she could no longer watch)

sayyed aakhda daffan hounda te dekh
Imam Hussain (as) said "watch the funeral of our son"

aakhdi hussain mai maa hahn
she replied "oh hussain, I am his mother"

<zakir stops narration to say>

menu iss paak zikr di qassam hai
I swear by this holy zikr

mimbar di qassam hai
I swear by this mimbar

jera bahadur hai di hussain, jera mu di wariy ai, qand che kitti ay
however brave was the wife of Hussain, when the dirt reached Ali asghar (as) face, she turned her back

<zakir resumes>

I'd like to take a moment to thank brother @DigitalUmmah for taking the time to write out and compile these. It's going to be much easier for me to compile the Muharram Playlist for the car this time around.

Any more recommendations?

Dedicated to Abdullah. Absolutely heartbreaking and a classic latmiyyah that all Iraqis ought to know.

Someone get on and translate it! I hope you enjoy in the meantime.
