@hameedeh.....you win! This might be a good idea after all.

So.....my daughter has done her part and picked appropriate tribal names for the child  (sorry, @magma....all our names are "unisex" unless you go out of your way to gender it for some reason...like " Snow Goose Woman" or something.)

SG is still dragging his feet. Cannot decide. Says he never had to name a baby before. Even the suggestion that he name the possible son after his dad  or grandpa and the daughter after his mom or grandmother has not broken the stalemate ( is there a rule about that I don't know about and he is not telling me?)

I'm sure he will come up with something, but maybe priming the pump at this point will help.

DD says she would like a name that could be used on either side of the world with ease, but will not hold him to that because she " did not care one bit what the dominant culture here thought" when she picked the her part of the name.

So maybe somebody here will have the wisdom to come up with an appealing choice by The end of February.

I think "Sara" is a pretty widespread girls name worldwide. Common in multiple languages and cultures in both hemispheres. Can't go wrong with that.

Cant think of boys name right now.

Fatima is common among Arabs, is one of the most revered names among Shia, and is also fairly well known name among Catholics after 'Our Lady of Fatima' in Portugal.
For boys, names like Moosa, Jaffer, and Reda could be pronounced easily for all.

Congratulations!!

I'd go with something like David  (Dawud) or Abraham  (Ibrahim ) for male.  Even Noah (Nuh) would be a great name, everyone likes the name Noah, it's kind of a classic and easy to pronounce on both sides of the family.

For female, I'd go with Mary (Maryam) , I don't really  like Sara or Sarah,  we have enough Sarahs in the world anyway.  @LeftCoastMom

@hameedeh....lol!  I wouldn't call SG " secular", but he does definitely forge his own spiritual path at this point in his life. Like his dad....and his grandpa. Far as I can tell the whole family is like that and prefer their own elders.  Kind of like us. Maybe that is why we get along somewhat. Independent...or stupid stubborn...take your choice. Long story. Still consider themselves completely Shia though. You probably understand this vis-a-vis Islam better than I do. In Catholicism, we're just called the "  liberation theology  raging lefty loyal opposition" :D

or as my daughter says " praise the Lord and pass the ammunition because I see a corporato-fascist oppressor approaching".

PS...the names " Hillary" and " Donald" are definitely out.

Thanks...I was going to mention the " Fatima" fact, but you beat me to it.

@hameedeh thanks....this was a good idea. I already see several names that I think are nice that  no one in the house has mentioned. Will write them down.

Is Jasmine a common name that is popular?

It's such a shame that your daughter did not marry a Sunni.

Then, if it was a boy, you could have given him a traditional American Indian name like Running Warrior* which would also have been a good reference to the third Muslim caliph.

*ok, it probably isn't traditional, but you know what I mean.

*slow clap*

Salam

I thought I was being weird for having a list of baby names readily available. Guess we all have our lists :P

These are my favourite names:

Boys:
Mikhail (misha)
Benyamin
Levi
Harun
Lo'ai
Azlan

Girls:
Amalia
Amani
Ascia
Layla
Lara
Yara
Nancy
Nirmeen
Shereen
Shahrazad
Fey

I would've added Dhul-Qarnayn to the list of boys among others but doubt it can be pronounced right. Not even sure Lo'ai and Harun can be pronounced right in the west.

Yeah...

Chiapas, many parts of South and Central so-called " America", Africa , and the Phillipines ...if you have not heard of these conflicts over the decades it is probably not your fault.  They are not Israel. In some areas the nuns had to stop wearing their habits because they were being suspected by the powers -that -be of carrying supplies under them  to rebel groups. So then the nuns  had to find other ways to smuggle those supplies. Have had some big successes. But you won't find those on the map either.

Has my sweet grand baby's naming thread turned into an inter sectarian conflict?

Girls : Zara , Layla , Amal , Maria

Boys : Zain , Adam

I have cried on several people's shoulders here about "Zain." You know why.

"Jafar" and " Jasmine" have likely been done in by Disney unfortunately....

Nice name suggestions so far, I just wanted to add the boy name: Ismael.

Can we see a picture of the new born later? I wanna know what a half ayrab half Pocahontas look like!

Sure...if the parents have no objection. I don't think you will be in for any surprises, though.

You know what would be a nice male name? Probably not applicable in this particular case (due to pronunciation difficulties) but in general: Fajruddin (Dawn of the faith), then you can call him Fajr (Dawn) for short.

I also like the name of one of my grandfathers: Ghodratullah (Might of Allah) then you can call him Ghodrat (Might) for short.
