YA ALI!

this is such a fascinating part of Iranian culture

is it actually greco-roman wrestling, or is it a completely separate martial art?

We invented this kind of wrestling brother, this sport is over 3000 years old.

Brother, I have to mention this man when talking about this sport, he was absolutely one of the greatest and one of my inspirations:

I should add that he was killed by the last shahs secret service SAVAK (who were trained by israelli mossad) for speaking against the shahs rule.

And a smal tribute to him:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gholamreza_Takhti

I wanted to create a thread presenting this sport and write some about its history in honor of my two grandfathers, Moshtaba and Ghodratullah who both trained this sport in their younger days, they both passed away some years ago and I've been meaning to make a thread in their honor for a long time and when you asked these question I couldn't hold myself from answering.

Please brothers and sisters reading this, send a smal salawat and al-Fatiha for them both, it would mean a lot me, thank you!

It is so sad that this traditional sport is slowly fading, when I was in Tehran some years ago with my father, we went to visit his old place where he trained this sport and they had unfortunately closed and a kick boxing club had opened instead, the youth are not honoring out history and it is slowly fading.

Salwat for your grandparents, may Allah forgive all their sins, increase his mercy upon them, and increase their position in heaven, InshaAllah.

I am very interested to learn more about this - my own martial arts history is focused on striking (I have never been comfortable with wrestling/ grappling)

- karate
- (very briefly) judo
- western boxing
- (very briefly) kung fu
- taekwondo
- (10-ish years) Muay Thai, full contact
- (1 year) krabi krabong - thai fencing/ weapons.

it is a shame to hear about it fading, but why do iranians not teach it outside of Iran? thats how bruce lee spread kung fu across the world by opening it up to non chinese?

Thank you brother for the salawat and please recite an Al-Fatiha for them as well!

Good to hear you have done martial arts, all muslim men and women should know some fighting, it is a must if you ask me.

Yes, the history is very rich.

In the old days it was a form of warm up before a battle that the warriors did. All the equipment they use today represent different weapons they would use in battle, such as the wooden planks which would be the sword, or the wooden shield or the bow or the clubs. You see how they spin around very fast? That was a last stance position when you were surrounded and your going to die, imagine someone with two swords in each hand spinning and jumping like that.

When islam was introduced to Iran the sport got a spiritual element which gave it a deeper essence.

What I love about this sport is that they do not only teach you physical strength but they teach you moral principles inspired by the Ahlul bayt(as) as well as motivate you spiritually and teaches the young to be humble and respect the elders, in other words they teach them akhlaq, so one could say they create and train heroes and the sport is called varzesh-e pahlavani that actually roughly translates to: Training of heroes.

The places they train are called Zoorkhaneh which roughly translates to: House of strength or house of force.

I think the reason they dont teach it to other places is because of a couple of things: Ahlul bayt(AS) and their teachings, the islamic aspect of it is a must for without it the sport loses its soul and essence, not every non muslim would be okay with this, salawat is a central part as well as duas.

Second reason is that this is a men only sport and normally they dont allow women to even enter the zoorkhaneh this would not be accepted by most western countries.

This sport is fading because people dont value their religion as much anymore and they dont value their spiritual side and they just want to train to look good and get female attention. And they just want to train martial arts to feel like they can beat other people in fights not so they can defend themselves and their families.

And the young ones are too influenced by western BS culture, they worship it as if it was the ultimate way of living, meanwhile they are just trying to impress on each other by being more western. Unfortunately young humans are stupid like that and they dont value their own culture and history they will realize when its too late how stupid their prioritizes were.

This sport is really great because it teaches us to be humble and kind, something both you and I could need.

The secret is quite simple really. All other countries, children grow up playing soccer/football, basketball, baseball, etc etc. Iranian kids grow up wrestling, mostly with their father or brothers. I for example grew up wrestling with my dad, that was how we spent "play/fun" time together, instead of watching cartoons, play hide'n'go seek, or soccer etc, we wrestled, sometimes for hours.

If you go to north Iran, mazandaran specifically, kids spend a lot of time on the beach just wrestling eachother. South iran, is so bloody hot, only escape you have is either swimming pool or wrestling gym.

It's kind of embedded in kids from early age to wrestle, it's also looked at as a feature of strength in boys.

In regards to greco roman, Iran isn't known for it, although we have some really dominating champions, we are mostly known for freestyle.

For olympics....make sure you watch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hassan_Yazdani

The kid is a freak of nature. Notice the YA ALI on his chest :)

thats like cricket for pakis, when I was in high school, I wasnt even invited to the cricket tryouts, the white teachers just automatically selected every paki and indian for the cricket team lol.

are you trained in this iranian wrestling style like @IbnSina? or is it just from a lifetime of playfighting?

Yazdani just beat the wrestling version of Ivan Drago. Drago was very gracious in defeat though.

MashAllah for Yazdani but to me this olympics will always remain bitter because of Salimi getting robbed.

@repenter Russian dude was crazy strong. and just plain crazy. Playing through a head wound like that.

BTW @DigitalUmmah bro I personally grew up playing footie so I dunno what repenter is talking about. lol. Wrestling and weightlifting is popular all across Iran but certain regions produce the strongest men and it ain't mine. Turks and Kurds disproportionately represent us in these competitions, because they grow up carrying donkeys and goats on their back. Your average Turk has the kneecap the size of your average Fars' head.

Bro @repenter I have two questions for you:

1) First is not so much a question as much as it's a request. Please tell the good folks here about the regional styles of wrestling yall have in Mazandaran. These styles are found nowhere else on earth, kind of like how you won't find dambe boxing except in Nigeria.

2) Any advice for over-the-hill folks like myself to try to get into wrestling, for the purpose of physical and spiritual growth? If I have no gym, no skills, and (potentially) not even a sparring partner. ?

1. Mazandaran has no spesific style. It's just popular there due to the history of lots of clubs and boys showing how strong they are on the beach. The density of wrestlers per capita WPC is just high there.

2. Only way to get good at wrestling...technique wise...is to just wrestle. If you have no sparring partner i would probably look into other hobbies....stamp collection or something?

Someone from Babol told me they have a regional style where you grab the guy only by the back of the neck and the lower back (by the trousers), and the goal is basically to make his back hit the ground. No point system, either. First one on his back loses. He told me what it's called but I forgot. You never heard of this style?

Is it called freestyle? Emam-Ali Habibi Goudarzi was born in Babol. I'm sure he is famous there.
