:salam:

First we must define unity - are we talking about unity in terms of compromising Aqeedah? If not, then unity is possible on other terms.

It also depends on the groups we wish to unite with - are they the salafi-sect, whose leader ibn taymiyyah declared it halal to slaughter shia's (not layman, only shia's who know their beliefs, like the Ulema), and who spread hatred and claim they one can not even reply to salam to us , sit with us, or eat with us ? (they vary in this)

We will open our arms for them, but have it rejected.

I believe on our part, we must treat their loved and revered symbols with respect. We must not tease, mock, or cause fitnah. We must have the very best of manners when engaging in theological discussions and debates.

I think it's pointless not eating with a shia, or sitting with them nor replying to salam to them, if they do all that  with an infidel. Muslims treat well infidels and not shias? who is closer to Islam or Allah, an infidel or a shia??

I think you're talking about unification among shia comunity, not between shia and sunni. I think it's highly possible, while all truly believe in Islam and Allah, but nowadays we're like the foam of the sea.

Tradition of  Thaqalayn is one of the traditions that Shiites and Sunnis have accepted it. And both groups consider it an authentic traditions. So believe in the truth of Ahl al-Bayt is the best way for the unity of the Islamic Ummah.

The Messenger of Alláh - may Alláh bestow peace and benedictions upon him and his Progeny - said: "Verily, I am leaving behind two precious things (thaqalayn) among you: the Book of God and my kindred (`itrah), my household (Ahl alBayt), for indeed, the two will never separate until they come back to me by the Pond (of alKawthar on the Judgement's Day)."

This tradition says  household of the prophet are real teacher of the  Qur'an and explanation of the household of the prophet from verses of the Qur'an is right explanation without wrong, this tradition is a sign shows household of prophet(pbut) are  infallible of error  In interpreting religion.

The Prophet ordered to the Islamic Ummah,  to obey them  unconditionally; If they were not infallible, prophet  expressed some conditions in obedience to the Imams.Like obedience of parents  is conditional  in Islam.

We have enjoined man to be good to his parents. But if they urge you to ascribe to Me as partner that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. To Me will be your return, whereat I will inform you concerning what you used to do. [29:8]

Qur'an expresses only pure people have capability to understand the  inner  level of Qur'an

This is indeed a noble Quran, in a guarded Book —no one touches it except the pure ones— [56.77 to 79]

In the verse describes household of prophet as pure people

Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification. [33.33]

Is it possible to unite the Islamic society again? Considering too much challenge and difficulties which Muslims are occupied with?

just to clarify your question

i think first of all you need to  mention what you intend by unity (united agaist what??)

do we need unity in order to have peace within our societies?

--we can have so by ways or peaceful co-existance. a concept which is other than unity

or to live Islam the way it was lived during the time of the prophet (pbuh)?

--not possible unless we change our beliefs or they change theirs

or unity in face threats?

--this requires unity.

so when you ask how to unifi our Islamic society i believe you mean the third point.

Is unity possible?

Unity is not only possible but also necessary. The world of Islam suffers from different problems ranging from poverty to malnutrition to disease to self-inferiority. These problems form the different aspects of what is usually called 'underdevelopment' or 'backwardness'. Among other things, it is insecurity that is responsible for the vicious phenomenon of backwardness. Advanced nations enjoy high level of security. Despite being diverse and despite having unbelievably vast amount of freedom, their true nationals never plan to undermine national or international security. They do use harsh rhetoric against each other but they never intend to sacrifice national or international security for their own vested interests. This is because they realize without any bargaining the vital importance of security. They gained this knowledge but not very easily. They acquired this understanding but after experiencing long centuries of insecurity as a result of religious and civil wars. When they were, as a matter of fact, tasting the bitter flavor of civil wars, we were relatively secure enjoying ourselves facing no fundamental problem. Advanced nations know that security is everything. It is unquestionably so important that without it nothing will be of any avail. If you are rich having a lot of wealth, your richness will be of no use to you when the society in which you live is insecure, because every now and then it is highly possible for you to fall a victim of the prevailing insecurity, losing thus not only your property but also your life. That is why it is believed that in an insecure society nothing is of any value. But security is tied to social integrity and social unity. If there is not social unity and social integrity with everybody allowing himself to deliver hate speeches there will be no security. If there is no security there will be no business and when business comes to halt poverty will loom. Thus if we want to have an advanced and developed society, we must improve business and encourage investment and if we really desire to improve the economic sector we must improve law and order situation and raise the level of security. And if we want to take any step forward in terms of security we must attain social unity and social integrity. Thus social unity is not only possible but also necessary. It is not a luxurious commodity but an essential good.

How to unite the Islamic society again?

In a discussion somewhere under the same heading I pointed out that unity is not a luxurious commodity, it is instead an essential good. But now the question arises as to how one can achieve unity realizing that the unity of Muslim ummah is badly undermined if not totally lost. Are there any mechanisms through which we can improve or revive Muslim unity? Below are some concrete suggestions:

 a) Let's increase our awareness. The first thing we can and must do is increase our awareness in regard with the vitality of social unity. As long as we have not realized the importance of social unity we will not be mentally prepared to take steps to improve it. Our writers, our film makers, our radios and televisions and in one word our mass media must leave no stone unturned in order to inject this awareness into the people's minds. Once people know that the importance of social unity is no less than the importance of their butter and bread they will themselves rush to rescue their unity. I suppose Muslims, especially those with no or little knowledge are unaware of the crucial role unity plays in their daily activities. Were they in possession of such awareness they would value their unity as much they would value their lives and properties.

b) A check has to be put on seminaries. As statistics show religious seminaries are on the rise. Far-flung areas with no basic facilitates well accommodate more than one of these so-called seminaries. A cut-throat race is going on for building seminaries not only among the followers of different denominations but also among the followers of the same sect. There are localities whose schools are replaced by seminaries with curriculum under no body's supervision. If there has to be a seminary it has to be under the watch of an internationally recognized board of supervisors. Education is not a game. We must know where we send our children and what they are fed. Otherwise the result will be no better than seeing our boys carrying out suicide attacks in the name of Islam after staying a few days in these seminaries.

c) A check has to be put on Friday prayer leaders. We will reach nowhere as long as we suffer and our Friday prayer leaders in whom people hugely trust, not noticing our suffering, offer hate speeches thus implicitly verifying and supporting those carrying out suicide attacks. If things are to be righted, Friday prayer leaders, especially of far-flung areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan must not be left to themselves with the assumption that they are good people. They must be placed under unprecedented scrutiny. The texts of their speeches must be reviewed before they are delivered. They must be ready to be taken to book for each and every word or phrase they utter. Islam has given much importance to people's faces, bloods and properties. No one under no title has the right to play with such things.

d) A check has to be put on preachers: Restricting Friday prayer leaders alone will not serve our goals unless all religion-related activities are put under strict scrutiny. Those who regularly go on preaching missions should come to know beforehand that unity is not something to play with. They should be instructed not to harm social unity and to distance themselves as much as they can from things that endanger social integrity. A preacher must not go on a preaching mission unless he is guaranteed by some higher authorities to move in line with the declared policies.

How to unite the Islamic society again?

Part (three)

e) Their economic activities must be under surveillance. Sometimes these groups follow their disgusted activities but quite furtively under the guise of some charity centers. These charity centers should of course be allowed to carry out their philanthropic activities from building schools to running hospitals, but their economic activities must be put under surveillance lest they do not follow a detour.

f) Their bank accounts must be under close and regular inspection. In order to carry out their activities and run their institutions they need large sums of money. To keep their money in a safe place and to transfer it timely and effectively they need to make use of banking facilities. In advanced countries, when the authorities decide to cripple an institution they put a check on its banking activities monitoring its income and expenses. If this measure is taken properly it will prevent money from reaching in the hands of vicious people.

g) Intelligence agencies must will to cooperate. Last but not least, if there is really a will to dislodge these elements and destroy their master-mind, authorities especially intelligence agencies must cooperate. If the intelligence agencies do not cooperate as is the case in some neighboring countries, nothing extraordinary will happen even if the army steps in and begin intervening.
