Asalamalekum,

We hear that if a marja is expert in a particular field, one must follow them and that issue. But i have never heard of any such mujtahid. I think they all have to take same courses, in able to become a marja. Therefore, there is always a confusion on who is the most learned, because non of them are studying one field.

wa alaykum assalam;

All Maraje' should be experts in different fields such as Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, principles of jurisprudence, 'Ilm al-Rijal, Arabic Literature, etc. one jurist may be more learned and knowledgeable in one, two or more. the thing which is certain is that a jurist who is being imitated, must be expert in those different fields. if you understood that one jurist ,in one special or particular subject or part of Fiqh, is more talented than the other ones, you must refer to and follow him.

for extra info concerning Ijtihad and Taqlid you can refer to :

I think most of them by default are experts in Jurisprudence.

Few of them may turn to other fields. On the other hand, some non marj'ie maybe more specialised in non fiqh non taqlieed issues.

Some are great historians, some are great mufasireen etc.

Salam

Thanks for replying. The problem is that one doesn't know who is the most knowledgeable in a single subject, and it is extremely difficult, if not possible to find out that marja. In that case can one just pick the most learned marja and just imitate him in all the islamic laws?
