Growing the Saudi private sector

Recommended Posts

Coaxing Saudis into the private sector remains one of the government’s main challenges, given the tougher work conditions compared with the state sector and poor skills attainment within the education system.

It's actually not that difficult.

A while back, I worked out how the British government has done it, quite clever really.

You take an activity carried out by the public sector e.g. rubbish collection.

You privatise it (give the contract to your friends basically).

The government no longer pays the salaries of the employees. So public sector employment goes down.

The government now pays the private contractor, which pays the employees, hence private sector employment goes up.

Same rubbish gets collected by the same people in the same vehicles!

But now you have an entrepreneurial economy instead of the old bureaucratic one.

Ta. Da. Magic.
